I don't understand why people hate on 4e's map conventions. That was one of the few parts of the game I liked. It sped everything up considerably. Every time someone drops a big AoE in 3x you have to sit there and fiddle with the stupid template trying to figure out the optimum point to drop it. It takes half a second in 4e. And I don't find a square much more offensive to my geometric sensibilities than the silly AoE template we use in 3x. Either way, in my mind I see a round fireball. Abstraction is abstraction. Faster gameplay is more important to me than 'sorta closer' to reality.
