Monk Flurry: using Spear and combining unarmed strikes with his elbows / feet

Rules Questions

Sovereign Court

Hello

My player asked me whether he could make a flurry attack using his spear and elbows with max str bonus. I think by what he meant he wanted to select some of the flurry rolls with his spear and some with his unarmed strike. Is it legit?

Assuming that he has the ability to flurry with a spear, yes I believe he can do this. Flurry basically works like two-weapon fighting, so just assign the spear attacks to one 'hand' and unarmed strikes to the other one.

Edit: I have to warn you though, flurry rules have gotten... confused lately, so you may run into a lot of differing opinions and interpretations on this.

He *has* to alternate between bonuses as of the last clarification. So, attack 1 can be spear, attack 2 can be unarmed, attack 3 can be spear, etc.

**EDIT**

Ninja'ed!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a spear is not a "monk weapon" therefore they would not be able to flurry with it regardless.

And what about feet? it sounds fishy but can a monk keep his spear two-handed, strike once with his first flurry attack without any penalty for fighting with a two handed weapon with one hand and then hail kicks?

Quote from the flurry rules: "A monk applies his full Strength bonus to his damage rolls for all successful attacks made with flurry of blows, whether the attacks are made with an off-hand or with a weapon wielded in both hands."

Edit: This doesn't just mean that he won't get a penalty for his unarmed attack, but that he won't get a bonus for wielding the spear two-handed.

Have you never watched a martial arts film? The scene in Hero with Jet Li and Donnie Yen for example...Donnie wields a spear and has just as many punches, kicks ad elbows as he does attacks with the spear.

There are actually a few ways to do flurry with a spear. The sohei archetype is one, and I believe there is a feat that can let you make your deity's favored weapon into a monk weapon.

Ahh. Alright. I can go with that.

And just in case the OP was actually wanting clarification on the body parts that were legit for the monk to UAS with:
From the PRD Monk section-
" A monk's attacks may be with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may make unarmed strikes with his hands full."

Remember, as mentioned by others, just because a monk wields the spear two-handed does not mean he gets strength + 1/2 on damage on attacks with it while fllurrying! "A monk applies his full Strength bonus to his damage rolls for all successful attacks made with flurry of blows, whether the attacks are made with an off-hand or with a weapon wielded in both hands." So if your strength is 16, you always get +3 STR bonus to damage when flurrying, never more, nor less.
