Advice for running first 7-11 scenario

GM Discussion

2/5

Our VL suggested I run King Xeros of Old Azlant this week (most likely Saturday) and I'm just looking for general advice on both the scenario (I've played through it before, so I'm familiar with it) and just running high level scenarios.

Our tables are regularly large enough that any scenario is usually played up, so it's unlikely that I'll be running it at subtier 7-8.

Thanks!

That is a fun scenario. I think for most high tier games preperation is the key. Make notes on DR and spells, size and reach.

Prep, Prep, Prep and then prep some more. Once you've done that accept the fact that you WILL make a mistake and your players will pounce on it like a wino on ripple (the grape one too).
This mistake will kill something fast, either your critter because you forgot one of it's MANY defenses or a player because you underestimated how nasty it's attack was.
Roll with it and move on, you'll get better with practice.

#2 Players will have an OBSCENE amount of power and outrageous actions they can take at this level, your critter knows this so don't hesitate to bring the pain. Your players are in the big leagues now and should be abe to handle it when you take off the gloves.

#3 If you can, go ahead and run all the fights before hand to get familiar with how the critters fight and what options they have. Big tables at high level have dozens of different possibilities for every action, so you have a lot to keep track of. If you get comfortable with how your critter is supposed to respond you can pay more attention to the players and keep yourself from getting overwhelmed.

Here's my advice and I'm going to keep it spoiler free:

1. Pay attention to the scale of the maps. Every square is 10 feet -- not 5 feet.

2. The scenario is not organized very clearly. It bounces back and forth from scene and room description. As a result, it requires you to really pay attention to what is actually in each room and how inhabitants will respond to those pesky kids.

I would definitely recommend printing this one out, rather than playing off a tablet or pc. I found myself furiously flipping pages back and forth on my iPad and it was a pain.

Thanks for the advice everybody! I've decided that I'll try and prep it for later, since I've already got it printed out an everything but I want to make sure that I'm totally on top of things before I run it.
