Hello everyone!

I'm looking to start a virtual tabletop game of Carrion Crown on Tuesdays. Time is hard to nail down right now, as I want to be able to get as many players as possible. Flexbility that day is a major plus, I guess, if you want to play :). I myself am in Nevada, UTC -8. For ease of thought, we'll pretend Daylight Savings Time isn't happening right now.

Once I have some people committed, I'll give particulars of the game beyond the fact that it follows the Carrion Crown adventure path and starts at level one.

As for which VTT I am going to use, I am not very good with Maptool.. it's almost needlessly complex. I was thinking D20pro. With that, 2 people can get in on my guest passes. For everyone else it's ten bucks for a non-expiring player license. I am open to other suggestions, but there will be a learning curve. Voice system will be Skype or Ventrilo.

Anyway, let's do this thing!

Edit: Mumble is also a possibility for voice. I'll need to try it out, I hear it's good.

Scarab Sages

I'll toss my hat in for interest. I've used maptools and skype almost exclusively in my gaming so far, and I don't have a lot of free cash, so I'd have to use one of your guest passes for d20pro.

I know absolutely nothing about the carrion crown adventure path, so I'd probably be looking at running a two-handed melee type.

As with all Paizo AP's, there is a free player's guide available right here on the web site. It will help you get an idea about the beginning of the campaign and the surrounding areas. Two-handed melee sounds great, though.

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have some interest in this game. I have a D20Pro GM licence+12 players so I have my own licence.

I will keep up on this thread.

Grand Lodge

I have taken a look at Mumble, and it looks like a great option. It's also free. I would really like to see some more interest in this game, but I don't know what to say to entice people more than CARRION CROWN! :)

Grand Lodge

Well, there are a couple people on the PbP site I play on, Rondak's Portal, who are also interested. Four interested parties so far.. we might have a game!

Dark Archive

Just a FYI I have a 10 man ventrilo server available if we were to play.

Liberty's Edge

I'll trump that with a working, tested Mumble server. ;) Also, throwing my hat in the ring here (although work commitments require that I depart around midnight Pacific time, to get some sleep).

Liberty's Edge

Well, you already knew I was interested, Squirrel.

If you need a Mumble server up, running and known-solid, we might be able to volunteer ours.

Grand Lodge

Good, good. I recommend you all download the Player's Guide, if you haven't already. It's not perfect, but it'll give you an idea of what the Adventure Path is about and what kinds of characters would fit well.

If you have HeroLab, that's a bonus. The characters can be loaded directly into d20Pro. Characters will be level 1, 20 point buy. Classes are any from the Core and the APG, as well as archetypes. Races are any from the core, with options from the Advanced Race Guide. I will allow other races from the ARG, so long as the character fits the mood of the campaign. You don't have to write a history or description, as those will come out in play.

You will all begin play after being invited to the funeral of an old friend, Professor Petros Lorrimor, by his daughter Kendra. How and why you know him is your own choice, some options are covered in the manual.

A little about my tabletop and virtual play style(it's different from my PbP style). I emphasize strong character interactions and interactions with the NPCs, who each have a personality of their own. I am not a brilliant voice artist, but I will try very hard to make each character come alive for you. I'll say that this campaign is about 65% role-playing, 35% combat, subject to the needs of the group. The campaign emphasizes the scholarly as well as the physical, so no character type will be out of place.

I expect that you all will maintain the highest standards of integrity. As dice rolls can be handled by D20pro, I don't anticipate any problems during play time, but please be honest about what's on your character sheet. Blatant powergaming or min/maxing is not wanted, or appropriate, but at the same time, I don't want you to gimp yourselves. I'll let you know if anything seems shady.

I don't expect clerics to always be healers, nor rogues the constant trap-finders, nor fighters the dumb sword-wielders-- unless, of course, this is how you want to play the character. Use your statistics as a guideline, but not the be-all-end-all. Character is a big thing with me, as I'm sure you're seeing!

Other notes. I do have a few house rules that should be brought to your attention. I will post those seperately, to keep this post from being overlong.

Grand Lodge

House Rules

Basic Character Rules
- We use the Medium XP track.

- New characters entering the game have as much experience as the character with the lowest total. They start with basic gold only, to prevent item bloat.

- Characters are created with the Point Buy system, 20 points.

- Use any classes from the Core, APG, Ultimate Magic, or Ultimate Combat.

- At first level, you get max hit points as per the rules. Each additional level, you roll your hit points, but you may reroll any “1” or “2”.

- All PC and NPC characters begin with a skill rank in either Profession or Perform; Craft; and either Ride or Swim for free.

- Add +1 to one physical and one mental stat at level 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20.

- You may choose which statistic(and modifier) to assign to each save: either Constitution or Strength for Fortitude saves; either Wisdom or Charisma for Will saves; and either Dexterity or Intelligence for Reflex saves. This choice cannot be changed once made.

Classes
- Fighters get a good Will save on top of Bravery. Add Diplomacy, Knowledge[Nobility] and Sense Motive to class skill list in addition to skills as listed below.

- Rogues get a good Fortitude or Will save, your choice at character creation.

Rolls
- A natural “1” requires confirmation as a critical fumble. If the second roll would have hit, the result is simply a miss. If it wouldn't have hit, the result is a critical fumble. Results will be determined based on the scenario or a random chance table(if I'm feeling saucy).

Healing Magic
- Dice are rolled for”Cure Wounds” AND “Cause Wounds” spells as a 2d6 rather than 1d8. For instance, Cure Light Wounds and Cause Light Wounds now have a base of 2d6.

Skills
- When rolling skill checks, a natural 20 is treated as a roll of 25 (20 + 5), while a natural 1 is treated as a roll of -4 (1 – 5). Add skill ranks and other modifiers normally.

- The skill Craft[Alchemy] is now simply called Alchemy. It deserves its own unique skill name.

Items
- Magic armor and weapons do not resize to fit their wearers unless this is built into their enchantment(hint: it rarely is). Magical accessories, such as rings and necklaces, DO resize.

- Nonmagical items will generally have prices similar to those found in the Core, unless you have a special arrangement.

- Magical items, on the other hand, are rare and powerful things. Those shopkeepers who buy or sell them will set their own prices. There is no “Magic R Us”-- the selection of any shopkeeper will be limited, as will be their funds to buy items from you. If you find someone willing to make you a truly enduring magic item, rejoice-- that person is a diamond in the rough.

Spellcasting
- When casting on the defensive, failing the roll means you cannot cast the spell in that round. You do not, as the Core states, lose the spell.

Scarab Sages

Looking good so far. Do you have an email you'd like us to send our completed character sheets to? Or some other preference?

Also, starting gold: how do you want to do it?

Grand Lodge

Hey! One of the interested players dropping in. :)

Gonna make an oracle for this one, probably human or half-elf. I'm tempted to try one of the races in the new book, though...hmm. I know I'll settle eventually. ;)

So what are we using to connect? All I'm familiar with is skype. Uh, if we're using the thing where you need to pay, I might have to get a guess pass--I'm flat broke atm.

Grand Lodge

I bought an extra guess pass for D20Pro, so Magicdealer and Esmee, you're both covered. We'll be using Mumble for voice. It's free, intuitive, and has low latency compared to Ventrilo.

Take maximum starting gold for your class. It'll give you a little breathing room :).

I'll send my email privately to interested parties.

Grand Lodge

Now that things are coming together, it's probably time to discuss availability. I am good at any time on Tuesday. I will work my life around whatever we decide.

What about the rest of you?

Grand Lodge

I'm in EST, but pretty much free the whole day (unless it's a holiday, of course). Oh, since I don't have Hero Lab, would sending you pdf of my char sheet be all right?

Grand Lodge

Of course. I can input anyone manually who doesn't have Hero Lab.

Liberty's Edge

Pacific Time here. At work until 4pm, and available from about 5:30pm. Will have to head out by midnight, work the next morning. If that means scheduling around me is impossible, so be it.

Grand Lodge

Well, we'll also need to decide how long we'll play. 4-5 hours is generally good to shoot for. More than that leads to burnout :).

I'm Interested, i am available after 7:30 CST which is 5:30PST every day but friday, and will play until as long as i can. I'd like to go two-handed fighter, unless that guy from the first reply is, then i will do something else, maybe a cleric.

EDIT: also i can get my own pass no need to use a guest on me

Scarab Sages

I'm available any time on tuesdays, so whatever works for everyone else works for me.

As for the two-handed fighter, if you want to run one, you're more than welcome to. I'm just as happy playing something with a few more skill points :D And, with the number of people we're looking at for the group currently, we'll probably end up with duplicate roles anyhow.

So, just to get an idea of the party lookout so far:

Ziegnod wants to run a two-handed fighter
Esmee is looking at an oracle
Bigkilla hasn't commented yet on character type
Andy598d hasn't either, might be scheduling issues there
Sylverthorne is interested but no mention of character.
For myself, I'm happy running a two-handed fighter, a lore oracle, or a wizard. Just depends on what other folks feel like playing.

As another side note, should wizard come up, do you have any home rules for magic item creation?

Grand Lodge

Ziegnod, welcome to the discussion!

It looks like we can plan for a 6 PM PDT start time. Is anyone here not on daylight savings because of state, country? It will confuse things a bit :). Then we'll close up at about what, 10:30? Would that be too late for anyone?

I don't have any house rules for item creation, no. I have never actually had any significant problems with the RAW that required my hand in them.

I do like that you're all discussing possible character roles. I don't mind overlap, but a lot of people do because they don't want to feel like a third wheel. I get this, and encourage you all to hash it out as you will. Just keep in mind that this A)is ostensibly a horror game, and B)heavily emphasizes character interaction.

Other than that, I want everyone to have a good time. In my own real life tabletop group, things are always lively, and I don't think virtual gaming should be any different.

Sounds good to me, I can even go later I'm an owl, my skype is tjsyvertsen

"In my own real life tabletop group, things are always lively, and I don't think virtual gaming should be any different."

I agree wholeheartedly

EDIT: You know what, I've had an idea for a summoner for a while, I'm going to go with that instead. I'll post the sheet once I'm done tweaking it.

I'm a firm believer of not letting a party get to big, or it gets unruly and hard to manage. You're sitting at 6, which is pretty much the cap of what I'd be willing to go to. So, while I'm interested, I'll wait to see if there are no shows or quitters before I join, I'll have something rolled up and ready to go (more then likely some sort of Arcane caster, or Duelist destined fighter). I'm recently unemployed, so I got time until I can find a new job, so I'll be available, though it does make me very tight on cash for the d20 pass thing.

Dark Archive

Well, after seeing the house rules I will drop out of the running.

Grand Lodge

bigkilla wrote:

Thanks for your interest, bigkilla! Have fun out there.

Benchdog, when I ran the first few books of this AP on tabletop, I had as many as 9 at once. I understand where you're coming from, though, and I'm not quite sure how so many would work when all voices are vying for attention :). Anyway, you can now be our sixth if you want, with bigkilla stepping out.

Grand Lodge

Excellent point brought up here, though not that it will change what has already happened: you are all part of the house now. If one of my House Rules or other rulinga doesn't sit well, we can vote to change it! I am no god, just a man looking to play some Pathfinder.

The allure of the game is irresistible, I shall join as the 6th. I'll come with both the fighter and the wizard prepared, and play either depending on the rest of the party.

Here's my sheet, if you see anything wrong with it let me know so I can fix it.

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=421920

I've put together an... interesting fighter to play, if you want to toss me an email at tomtomtom893@live.com, I'll send you the character sheet so you can look it over.

Scarab Sages

Ok, I've decided to go wizard after all. I'll send you the sheet sometime tomorrow.

We're looking at:

Ziegnod's running a summoner
Esmee is looking at an oracle
Benchdog's running a fighter.
Andy598d hasn't picked a character type yet.
Sylverthorne is interested but no mention of character.
Finally, I'm running a wizard.

Grand Lodge

That is a fine summary so far, thank you! I am assuming we'll be starting this coming Tuesday. In that event, I recommend everyone get something put together and to me by Monday, so I can input you into D20Pro. It would probably be good if you downloaded the program yourselves, and Mumble also!

It's all coming together now.

I'm using hero labs, so I can just send you that file along with my character sheet, I just need a way to send you it. I'm not sure if there is a way to send you it in here or not...

If you have room I'd love to get in on this! I'll have d20Pro by Monday in any case, I have HeroLab, I can dl Mumble, and I'm a lovely human being. It looks like you don't have a rogue as of yet, so if there is room I can fill that slot, or really whatever is necessary. Lemme know, and I can get you a sheet or .por file by Monday.

I wouldn't be opposed to it if you have room. However availability is an issue for me. I'm navy, and my ship goes out to sea one week out of every month right now, and I have duty on tuesday once or twice a month. I'm fond of Ventetrilo. And I'd likely play a rogue, ranger, or maybe inquisitor, y'know, to add in a skilled/sneaky type

Grand Lodge

I am okay with more. I have already considered the possibility of adding text IM into the game as well, to resolve private messages and out of character items for a large group over voice. Also, we'll have a pretty steady core, so an occasional player or two wouldn't be a problem.

That said, I can't say yes yet, since some people are not okay with big groups. I will let the other players chime in their opinions before I make a decision. Diplomacy in action! :)

I've already stated that I'm not a huge fan of larger groups, but I've played in them before, so I don't really mind playing in one again I suppose. Squirrel seems pretty experienced with running larger group, and the success of such groups generally depends on how well the GM can handle that many characters.

Truth. Also, I've found online stuff better suited for handling large numbers of characters, with large groups sitting around an actual table people start distracting one another while waiting for their turn and derailing gameplay, rare for similar stuff to happen in an online environ.

Large groups are fine with me, to be perfectly honest even if it gets loud and distracting, i'm still having a good time. To me dnd is 80% playing and 20% slinging bullcrap with some cool people.

Grand Lodge

What Zieg said. I don't mind playing in a large group, and my experience online is that a larger group has less distractions if it's digital (but of course, we can still distract each other ;) ).

You can call it a definite on the oracle, I've been slowing building her over the past few days. :)

Grand Lodge

I haven't heard from a few of you, but I'll say Yes to you, Christopher and Caffeinated. Have to cut it off after you two, though :-). If everyone's going to be golden, we'll start this tuesday.

I'm good to go tuesday

Scarab Sages

I'm set for tuesday as well :D

Liberty's Edge

I was looking at running a Witch, myself - but if the group's too heavy on spellcasters, I have a paladin flailing about I could offer instead. Or full - not that I'd heard that last time I spoke to the Squirrel.
ETA: ... actually, on looking at the list, the shakeout is that you'd need either a healer of some kind, or a rogue type. I have a Witch archetyped out as a healer.. I think I'll do that.

Grand Lodge

A healer witch would make a good compliment to my life oracle. :)

And yeah, I'm all set.

Will have to build my character tomorrow while on duty. Have been busy this weekend. Will submit to you[BUSquirrel] asap tuesday(don't have internet beyond my phone on my ship, where I'm stuck on duty days)

Scarab Sages

We're looking at:

Ziegnod's running a synthesist summoner
Esmee is running a life oracle
Benchdog's running a fighter.
Andy598d hasn't picked a character type yet.
Sylverthorne is running a healing witch.
Christopher Harris is looking at a rogue.
Caffeinated is looking at a rogue/ranger/inquisitor
I'm running a crafting/bloatmage wizard.

Ranger, I'll be playing a ranger, since I can't guarantee being available every tuesday and I would make very roleplaying intensive characters for a rogue or inquisitor, whereas a Ranger I kinda want to make a more stoic and gruff character that could more easily hang in the background or run off for when I'm not available.

@BUSquirrel: Are you using Ultimate Combat Firearms rules? If so I want to use the Trophy Hunter Archetype for rangers so I can have a dwarf w/ a gun

Liberty's Edge

I have a Tien-Xian traveller statted up four ways. The variants most interesting to me are straight fighter (sword/shield) and samurai.

Squirrel, if you could pm me that email address I'll shoot you the .por file for my character. Thanks!
