Just what the title says, name your top ten comic book super heroes. I have seen several lists and they tend to be all over the place. Superman, Batman, Spawn, and Spider-man all seem to make the list each time. Others seem to vary. Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Captain America, Silver Surfer, and the Punisher tend to be on most lists. Whats your top ten?
J. Christopher Harris
Spider-Man
Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell)
Adam Warlock
Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers)
Captain America
The Hulk
Luke Cage
The Thing
Iron Man (specifically the Ultimate version)
Hercules
(if I were to name a team it'd have to be the Thunderbolts, from Zemo management through Osborn management periods)
(if I was going to include concepts as well as characters I consistently enjoy I'd name Batman in there as well, but they only really wow me every five years or so, it seems)
Sunderstone
Batman
Robin (Tim Drake)
Nightwing
Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
Flash (Wally West)
Starfire (beyond the boobage)
Catwoman (both current and the Jim Balent years)
Daredevil
Spider-Man (before the Jackal/Clone thing)
Silver Surfer (Ron Lim days especially)
Team books would alter the above list drastically.

in no particular order
1) Nightcrawler
2) Shadowcat
3) Daredevil
4) Captain America (steve Rogers)
5) Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers)
6) Zatana
7) Scarlet Witch
8) Spider-Man
9) Iron Man
10) Wolverine(before they destroyed the character)
Also I agree with a previous poster...The punisher is not a hero...he is a villain.

Hmm...
10) Green Lantern - No, not this one, or this one or even this one (though she's cuter). This one. Might be a bit of a stretch, since it's primarily because of his cartoon version.
9) Psyche/Mirage/Dani - Even without powers she kicks as much aft as any of the X-men. Now if only someone would get away from the 'she's indian, so she must use a bow' thing. She's also SHIELD trained.
8) Spoiler/Batgirl - Stephanie Brown had a rough ride, but she represents the character who doesn't believe genetics equals destiny. (Put Kara Kilgrave, M'gann M'orse and Rose and Joseph Wilson in this group too) Plus under Brian Q Miller's pen, she seemed to be written as a 'real' 20 something.
7) War Machine - James Rhodes is a true 'ascended extra'. I actually like him more than Tony. I enjoy the War Machine armor, but was always a fan of the man inside.
6) Nightcrawler - Kurt Wagner is able to be himself in a world that can't stand him. He's jovial, smiling and upbeat. When Kurt gets scared, you know it's hit the fan.
5) Magik - Illyana Rasputina always resonated with me as a kid. The darkness in her shattered soul mirrored my own. (at least as a 40 something, I can put a name to mine and take meds for it.)
4) Speedy/Arsenal/Red Arrow - Roy Harper is the most 'typical' character. He's made some big mistakes, but is a loving single parent and rising above those mistakes is what makes him a hero. (Yes, I ignore Cry for Justice.)
3) Thunderstrike - Eric Masterson was for me the 'With great power' character. Both as Thor and as Thunderstrike. He's also one of the few heroes that I want to 'stay dead' because of the wonder of his sacrifice. Bonus for him being a lefty.
2) Nightwing: Growing up, Dick Grayson was the hero I 'grew with'. You can have your Bruce Wayne, I'll take Richard Grayson.
1) Captain America. Hands down, Steve Rogers is what a hero is. Avengers:EMH is really playing into my Cap love.
HM - J'onn J'ones and Janet Van Dyne, in part HM's because it is their animated versions I love. Also Wolverine, but back when he was Logan, not James Howlett.

10) - Megalith (Continuity comics, late 80's early 90's)
9) - The Black Hood (!mpact comics, early 90's)
8) - Thor
7) - Nightcrawler
6) - Spiderman
5) - Invincible
4) - Robin (Tim Drake)
3) - Colossus (Piotr Rasputin)
2) - Starman (Jack Knight), if you've never checked out the 90's series you should for inumerable reasons
1) - The Bat, pre New 52
I'd add Frank Castle, the original Crow, and Scarab from Kabuki in there but they're not exactly "super heroic".
Hitdice
Grendel (Christine Spar, but the others count too.)
Miracleman (or Marvelman should you live in the UK.)
Northstar and Aurora (One entry, cause, y'know, twins.)
Wonder Woman
Batman
Spiderman
Nexus
Space Ghost
Kevin Matchstick (from Mage; I liked the first series better, but the second was okay.)
...and how could I forget, Bug from Micronauts!

9) Magneto
8) Lois Lane
7) Thor
6) Rorschach
5) Doctor Doom
4) Batman
3) Punisher
2) Lex Luthor
1) Superman
Lex Luther would be the greatest hero of all time if he could just get Superman out of the way to do it.
Jerry Wright 307
Lex Luthor's obsession with ridding the world of the "alien menace" that is Superman is the only thing that keeps him in check. If Superman wasn't around, multiple third-world countries would be in ruins, while he made billions through selling arms, medicines and relief supplies to both sides in the conflicts, not to mention a number of other corruption issues at home while he gained absolute control over the US government. And Lois Lane would be a virtual slave to him.
He is not a nice man.

Lessee... top ten
10: Batman/Spider Man (tied for 10th)
9: Maverick (aka the Driver)
8: Xi'an Chi Xan
7: Pip the Troll (the rest of the infinity watch could go here)
6: Psylocke
5: Wolverine
4: Superman
3: Adam Warlock
2: Iron Man
1: Captain America
Okay, narrowing it down is harder than I thought, but I think I got it right for me.

What I like about Luthor is that regarding Superman from the perspective of humanity he is technically correct, he is an alien tyrant operating with impunity. Of course there is one huge caveat, what Luthor cannot comprehend: Superman is pure.

There's an equally huge caveat Luthor likewise cannot comprehend; Luthor is not pure, nor are his motives

Moon Knight is absolutely my #1, but the other nine (probably) in no particular order...(some of these guys aren't exactly heroes but they aren't clearly villains.)
Aquaman (not even kidding, i love this guy)
Captain Marvel (Shazam!, The Big Red Cheese)
Terror (from Marvel's Terror Inc.)
Nemesis the Warlock
Adam Warlock (I think I just like the word "warlock" because Warlock from New Mutants is one of my favorite New Mutants characters)
The Incredible Hulk
Howard the Duck
Groo the Wanderer (don't really know if Groo counts as a 'super'hero but he's pretty awesome.)
Milkman Dan
I'm absolutely certain Milkman Dan is not a hero. In fact, he's actually just a really terrible person, but he brings me joy and that might be the greatest power any comic character can have.

Ha! Nice one Velcro Zipper! I was actually just getting ready to edit my list to include Groo. I would say any sword swinger that slays two seperate armies just because he cant remember which side he is on is Epic on a super scale.

Nice. Which in turn explains why he cannot trust Superman.

cranewings wrote:Lex Luther would be the greatest hero of all time if he could just get Superman out of the way to do it.Um, actually this was lampshaded in 52, when Superman asked Lex what good he did in the year Superman was out of commission. (answer, none)
And again in Morrison's Action Comics when Luthor is given unlimited power and chooses to use it to destroy Superman.

I'd be lying if I said I read enough Hellboy to call him a favorite. I dig him, but my exposure to him has consisted primarily of the movies and animated films.
Thinking back on my list, I realized I left out Squirrel Girl. I do heart me some Squirrel Girl.
That's a shame because the books are soooo much better than the other stuff, especially the terrible first movie.

@Callous Jack - I'm sure. I've managed to read a couple short Hellboy tales and The BPRD world is awesome. I just don't have the time and money to get into it much further. The Goon is another book I'd love to check out.
If you ever get around to it, I recommend the Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil TPBs. They are fantastic.
