Hey, I was wondering if anyone played it? Is it any fun? It looks pretty cool, and I was wondering if it was worth at least trying out. I just bought World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. But honestly, it didn't make me like it any more than when I tried playing it a few months after it first came out (Or the two times when friends said "Oh, it'll be different this time, just go get a game card and join me...").
It just doesn't really... Capture me. At all. It's fun for a while... But even the new races aren't anything spectacular (although they do have better starting quests). Unfortunately it's usually the same "kill 20 of these and return their essences back to me" annoying quests. Nothing in earlier levels makes me want to play longer (Even though end content, I hear, is pretty awesome; there's nothing that makes it worthwhile to stay long enough to get there).
I wanted to get Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, because that really plays to my "seamless world" factor where you can meet anyone anywhere, which I like. I know DDO is nothing but instances, but still, was wondering if it was worth trying out. I like the fact that there's so many fewer people on servers, making it more community based. I also like the fact that the quests are more custom made and have multiple ways to end it.
Anyway, I was looking for a game to have a timesink in. My D&D is nonexistant and currently (So far, it seems) unchangeable. Not to mention I have tons of time otherwise anyway. If someone could hit up with a reply on what you experience with the game was/is, that'd be awesome.

If you're willing to lay out a bit of cash for an MMO, but want a more tabletop experience, I'm pretty sure I still have room in my Eberron Campaign. Let me know if you're interested.
Okay, on to DDO. I do play, though pen & paper still takes priority. If you like a game that's more about tactics and strategy, then DDO is for you. If you like solo play more than group play, you probably won't like it. They do still have a long way to really capturing the Eberron feel, but the first time you see a warforged titan staring you down, you will get the heebie-jeebies. Or see the Demon Queen (a marilith) rise up from her throne and slither her way towards you, all six blades a-swingin'...oh yes.
That being said, MMOs are MMOs and you will find your fair share of idiots. Probably my biggest beef with DDO is the people that typecast characters into specific roles, particularly healers. Since I play clerics (a lot), sometimes I'm expected to do nothing but sit back and heal. BOOOOORING. Let me swing my mace, cast bestow curse and hold person and feel free to smash the bad guy. If you're looking for guild play, I'm pretty sure I can hook you up with a couple of groups. There is an all-warforged guild on Thelanis called The Brotherhood of Steel that are quite excellent to group with. I was playing a squishy human cleric - it was a lot of fun to not have to worry about healing so much as just enjoying the game and actually able to dish out some damage myself.

I know a few people who thought DDO was going to be awesome. They were SEVERELY disappointed. One of them thought it sucked so bad that they discontinued their subscription, then burned their copy of the game.
The general consensus is that DDO got massively nerfed and is also a gathering point for anal-retentive rules lawyers the world round (though not all DDO players are rules lawyers, a lot of rules lawyers find DDO to be the perfect outlet for their God complexes. Jerks.)
My opinion is: not worth the cost of the packaging.
