Prehensile Hair and AoO

Rules Questions

"Prehensile Hair (Su): The witch can instantly cause her hair (or even her eyebrows) to grow up to 10 feet long or to shrink to its normal length, and can manipulate her hair as if it were a limb with a Strength score equal to her Intelligence score. Her hair has reach 10 feet"

"Unless otherwise noted, using a hex is a standard action "

I am trying to figure out the exact mechanics of this.

Intuitively, I read this to mean that if I want to do something with my hair, I don't have to spend any actions activating the hair. The duration would start the moment I made the hair do something (such as attack).

Now the question I have is... if I don't have my hair deployed (extended), can I still make attacks of opportunity with it? If I still have duration left, do I threaten the area around me with my hair? (seeing as length can be changed instantly, and there is no standard action to activate)

I guess it comes down to how 'instant' works in the game.

It seems to work in all ways as a natural attack, though you could argue it takes a standard action to grow it, it doesn't take a standard action to attack with it. Since it seems to have unlimited duration it seems a bit nitpicky to require a standard action to grow it in a combat situation

So either just use it as a natural attack always available or require a standard action to grow it and then have it always available.

I'd agree with either as a player depending on the GMs wishes, if you have a reason to keep your hair short it might require reactivation as a standard action but this would be rare I think. As a GM I would rule it as a free action on your turn to grow it, if it isn't already out and ready.

It's still a standard action to activate it unfortunately since supernatural abilities are by default standard actions and nothing says in hex that it's a free action or such. The "instantly" part of the text is flavor only.

I can understand the confusion tho and I wouldn't mind some additional explanations regarding that specific hex. I am still having problems a bit figuring out if the -5 penalty applies on melee touch attacks with it.

Grand Lodge

I suppose you could work it into a readied action.

The -5 is quite easy to figure out.

"Secondary attacks are made using the creature’s base attack bonus –5 and add only 1/2 the creature’s Strength bonus on damage rolls. If a creature has only one natural attack, it is always made using the creature’s full base attack bonus and adds 1-1/2 times the creature’s Strength bonus on damage rolls."

So as long as your hair is your only natural attack, you are at full BAB (unless you mix it up with a weapon attack), and you get the 1.5x multiplier for str (int) damage. The secondary attack descriptor applies only for those characters that do have other natural attacks.

How would I flag the hex for developer clarification?

The prehensile hair hex lasts in one minute increments.
If it was active, you could take an aoo with it. If not, you'd have to use a standard action, activate it, and from then on use it for attacks etc.
