Cold Ice Strike and Metamagic feats for spontaneous casters

Rules Questions

5 people marked this as FAQ candidate. Answered in the errata.

The rules are pretty clear that when a spontaneous spellcaster attaches a metamagic feat to a standard action spell, it becomes a full round action.

However, how does that work with Cold Ice Strike (I don’t know of any other swift spells)? Does it also make it a full round action? Does it upgrade one step up (i.e. a standard action) or does it not change the casting time at all?

Pretty sure it makes it a full round action.

Well, whaddya know? It doesn't actually say. It doesn't even phrase it as a default, like "all spells take a full-round action unless they normally take longer"; it specifically says that standards are converted to full rounds. Swifts are completely unmentioned.

Hm. It's possible that at the time, there weren't any swift action spells that you'd ever want to metamagic. So I dunno. I guess that means it needs errata, so I'll click the FAQ button on your post, and I encourage others to do the same.

Existed, yes. But would it ever need metamagic?

Extended for really high places.

Thanks Jiggy.

I only just received my first 3rd level spell, but I was looking ahead for my character and thought about taking Cold Ice Strike. It’s not as a big of deal for me as I can just ask Sean or Jason at GenCon, and I know I wouldn’t have 6th level spells by that point.

However, it would be nice to get it clarified (FAQ’d) for all.

Ah yes, forgot about Feather Fall. However, there hasn’t been a ruling on it on using metamagic feats with spontaneous casters, correct?

Technically feather fall is an immediate action. Also, it's not much use for any other action type. :P

If you're casting feather fall and need to extend it because the distance you're falling is so great, then you can spare the extra actions/round time to cast it even if the casting time is increased =P

FAQ'd original post.

Heh, not saying I would have ever metamagic’d Feather Fall either, but the option was there and was wondering if it ever came up. :)
