Until the internet came along, the only way to get an official rules clarification was to write to Dragon magazine a really hope they answered your letter in Sage Advice. Best case scenario, given snail mail and printing times, you're looking at a two to four month delay, and that's if they read your letter immediately on arrival and decide on a answer that instant.
I always enjoyed seeing slow-motion flame wars in the Dragon magazine letters column.
March: "A party of 17th level characters wouldn't find a huge ancient red dragon anything more than a speedbump. The PCs would just do A, B, and C, and the dragon would be toast."
April: "You're wrong! The dragon would do X, Y, and Z and so it would win!"
May: "What are you talking about? X and Y would never work, and Z is just useless."
Cue the graphics of pages falling off a calendar, spring turning to summer turning to fall, etc.
