Deity selection from a roleplaying perspective

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

What deities are good for a PC to worship from a purely fluff stand point? Obviously this differs based on what the adventure is, but what are some generally good options? What deities do you find to be misfits for most adventures?

Since the vast majority of adventures have good PCs in mind, just about all the good deities seem to be good options. The chaotic deities also seem to favor the wild life of an adventurer over lawful deities.

Of course urban adventuring seems to favor lawful actions as opposed to chaotic ones. Most adventuring can be boiled down to going places, killing whatever you find there, and taking their stuff so evil deities aren't necessarily out of the picture either (assuming no paladins are in the party).

And of course there's the non-alignment aspects to consider. Pharasmins are under divine order to destroy the undead. Erastilians look after their neck of the woods, but are loath to leave it. And of course Lamashtans and Rovagug worshippers are virtually irreconcilable with the vast majority of adventurers.

What do you think? Are some worshippers more inclined to be adventurers? Do some deities' tenets make adventuring overly difficult?

This isn't a knock on any of the deities, I think they're all written very well and have great use for PC and NPC use, just some seem to be more adventurer friendly than others.

Calden Cailyean Seems made for adventurers.

I think lawful deities can easily be a problem, considering how much breaking and entering PC's tend to do without warrants.

Basically all the Good and Neutral deities work pretty well for at least some adventurers (as, I'm sure, is intentional). The Evil ones...not so much. Though even they can be made to work in a pinch.

Silver Crusade

Calden so long as you can kill evil monsters a chug a pint, Ms. Iso for "crusader types", Sarene (no smarty quip) for those who want a bit of redemption and forgiveness. Calista for those drama queens in the party, Norgorburger for those sneaky slightly evil types, Phrasma for your emos though she's far cooler, Torag is good for dwarves and crafty guys, Gorum for guys who love fighting, Abadar, Neshtys, and Idori for those of scholarly bent, etc

Only clerics are bound by divine strictures, any PC can say a prayer at the shrine and have a favorite god.

basicly everybody but a few truely twisted evil gods have a place or type of player that would go for them.

Sarenrae and Desna are both also good for scorched earth tactics when pushed too far. Neither is someone you f#+~ around with, and I like and respect that in a deity. Calistria's good for that, too, but that kinda goes without saying as the Goddess of Vengeance.

agreed with that, Rovagug and his horrid spawn is a good example of one of the few things sarenrae puts into the "kill them all, salt the earth, burn the corpses" catagory. she is a sun godess afterall And my persional favorite.

I think Desna is awesome, and her portfolio resonates well with an adventurer's life and the Pathfinders.

Also she supposedly created the Pit of Gormuz. By smiting a city out of existence. That's...really pretty hardcore right there.

I love Sarenrae. Also Desna and Cayden Cailean. Those three are probably my favorite Golarion deities, each in different (but awesome) ways...though in all honesty, I like pretty much all of the Good gods, find all the Neutral ones interesting, and love to hate most of the Evil ones. It's a fun collection of Gods, really.

Let's not forget to add Besmara to this list. On which note, I have no doubt that she's flirted with Cayden more than a little.

I think its safe to say that she's done a LOT more than just "flirt" with Cayden.

Sidenote: best epilogue for Skull & Shackles would definitely be going on an extraplanar pirate adventure with Cayden and Besmara.

Well, as many people have said, Cayden Cailiean is essentially the patron deity of the stereotypical adventurer. Desna is nice, being a travel goddess, as is Iomedae, being a jutsice goddess (good for rangers and fighters and paladins). Sarenrae, because most the the "sun" deities tend to be. Nethys and Irori, for their ideas of perfecting a certain art (magic and the self respectively) that a lot of PCs strive to do (why else are you trying to get some much EXP?).

It would be easier to ask which ones are incompatible with most PCs, in which case, go with the ones that make impractical demands or require VERY strange rituals to be performed, such as Rovagug, Lamashtu, or Zon-Kuthon...

Don't forget, 'patron' doesn't *necessarily* equate to 'worship.' One can have a predominant respect for, or fear of, a deity - and if that passion is what rules your character, I'd say it qualifies. To say nothing of unwanted patronage...I can see a few of those gods just messing with folks. Isn't that what gods do, anyhow?
