Spellbook Prices errata

Rules Questions

So, while trying to figure out the pricing formula around the spellbooks in the Ultimate Magic so that I could create my own, I realized that some of the prices listed in the book (update) are not correct.

So on the PRD website which has the latest errata, or in the pdf download, the price is listed for the very first book The Defensive Primer as 185 gp (in the book or older pdf's its 160 gp).

Neither of these is correct.

The first book calculates the price like this
0 lv - @ 5 gp each - x20 (core spells only)
1st lv - @ 10 gp each - x7
plus the cost of a spellbook - +15 gp
TOTAL = 185 gp

BUT...the book also has a 40 gp lock (average) on it and is calculating 2 cantrips that are not suppose to be in there to begin with. The rules even say that all spellbooks contain all cantrips except those in the opposed schools.

So the correct price of this book should be
0 (5 gp) x18
1st (10 gp) x7
+15 gp spellbook
+40 gp average lock
TOTAL = 215 gp

I don't have time to recalculate all of the prices, but I did notice this and was hoping someone else might notice this and correct it for future errata. Also, double check to make sure my math is correct.

AFAIK the prices listed for the UM spellbooks are the 'treasure' prices for those books, so already half the cost of creating them from scratch yourself (and exactly the price you get for selling them.)

Note that the cost of putting a spell in your book is not just scribing cost, but also the cost of accessing the spell in the first place (generally half the scribing cost).

To be honest, the prices don't come out any way I've ever tried to calculate them.

Ultimate Magic Spell Book Prices

For those too lazy to copy+paste :)

Is this for your character or as a part of treasure? Because characters begin with their cantrips and a certain number of spells for free and get free spells per level.

The only cost would be the price of the physical book + the lock.

UM Spell book cost calculations exclude the physical cost of the books (not sure if that is a bug or a feature) and don't include opposition school cantrips. e.g.:

Defensive Primer: 18 cantrips *5gp + 7 level one *10gp = 160gp

Apprentice Chapbook: 15 cantrips *5gp + 8 level one *10gp = 155gp

etc.

My thoughts when I did pricing is that the price is for a blank spellbook, and a used spellbook lacks that particular utility. :)

Indeed, you are not going to spend 150+gp to use it for its blank pages quality. I suspect it is that we have been trained by PFS thinking that you have to pay for every last thing.

Wait, where are you getting 160? Online it says that the Defensive Primer is 185, is this incorrect? I thought 160 was the price in the printed version which has been errata-d to 185.

ZomB downloads latest version of PDF. What? Why? I can't make it add up now :-(
