There were definitely a lot of 'laugh out loud' funny moments throughout the film. It definitely kept people engaged.

For whomever said Captain America was underutilized, I think it was sort of integral to his plot.
I didn't miss Natalie Portman at all. Not that I don't enjoy Natalie Portman as an actress; on the contrary, I usually loveher. But 'eye candy' is really unnecessary in a good movie, and even so, Scarlett Johannson and Cobie Smulders both had well-developed and important characters who also capably filled any 'eye-candy' quotient needed for a comic book film. (For the ladies, of course, we have the Chris's. And Hulk runs around half-naked most of the time---that's hot, right ladies?) I asked myself, if Natalie Portman's character in this film, what would she have to do? And the answer is . . . "Not much."
I was wary of Whedon directing, myself. He is very hit-or-miss with me. But I enjoyed every moment of The Avengers, and that is despite being underwhelmed by both Iron Mans and absolutely loathing Thor.
It was a little long, but not too bad. Besides, you need the extra time when dealing with this many characters. I'd still give it an A-.

Hm. I didn't care for Thor much myself. I found it to be little more than beefcake.

As of today The Avengers set a new opening weekend box officer number breaking 200 mil in the US on the 2nd day which beats the last Harry Potter film opening weekend total by about 30 mil. Plus in 8 days it has made 440 mil over sea's. I think with these kind of numbers it is a safe bet to say we will be seeing the Avengers 2 and likely pretty soon.

I am glad the movie is doing well. I am hoping this gets us a Black Widow movie. Plus get Joss more work, I am a Joss fan and I have to agree he can be hit and miss. The stuff he does I like I tend to love and then he does some pretty meh stuff too.

This. I loved the sequence where Natasha was tied up by the bad guys, seemed to be in a very bad spot, and yet was the one who had everything under control. I also loved how Coulson was just like everything was business as usual listening to her whoop up on a couple of creeps right in the middle of a phone call. A Black Widow movie that was more James Bond and less super heroics would be awesome.

Also I don't count Agent Coleson out just yet. A) We know Nick Fury already lied once about him and B) Tony's little throw away line to him on the phone. "You have reached Tony Stark's Life Model Decoy..."

Saw it last night. Our audience was laughing repeatedly at the funny stuff... but it was almost always funny IN CHARACTER, not just jokes to be jokes.
I actually liked how the film DIDN'T try to stuff in every side character and love interest from every other movie. The movie didn't need it, and it's also true to the Avengers book. While there are plenty of romantic subplots within the Avengers, you rarely see solo-book characters showing up in the team book. It happens, but not very often, and in situations much more like the Pepper Potts scenes.
I loved Mark Ruffalo's take on Bruce Banner, not as the depressed/this sucks Banner (Eric Bana) or the angry/scared Banner (Ed Norton), but more as the jaded, world-weary Banner who has come to terms with who and what he is. I also liked them playing up his scientist side; his byplay with Stark was very funny.
As for the mid-credits stinger, revealing
Awesome film. Tons of fun.
FWIW, I rewatched Iron Man 2, Captain America, and Thor this past week, and I found that all of them held up very well. IM2 I had been kind of meh on when I watched it the first time, but I liked it a lot better on rewatching it (Favreau's commentary was also interesting to listen to, though alas IM3 apparently is not going with the Mandarin as its villain). Cap and Thor I loved the first time around and watching them again didn't diminish my opinion for them.

This movie is fun.
I saw this movie last Friday and I have to say it's the best superhero movie in a long time. I'm so glad we've gone beyond simply deconstructing superheroes into letting them just be awesome.
This was a big part of what I loved about it. After at least a full on decade of Marvel's heroes being broken down, derailed, turning on each other, and that setting just generally getting more crapsack, it was great to see these characters act more like the characters I loved back when I still read the comics.

Ultron would definitely be a winner as a movie villain, and that would require the Pyms--it would seem like a big stretch to take a villain that thoroughly tied with a particular hero and just switch his origin to some other techie hero (like Stark or Banner). I love Ultron as a character, and think he'd be a great character to foreshadow during a movie that introduces Hank, then he evolves into the next picture.
That said, I'm even more stoked about the spoilered villain, just because I like that character so much. To me, he is the O.G. of Marvel's Magnificent Bastards, plots within plots, sometimes even willing to help the heroes against some more psycho kind of evil, but always rolling around to benefit himself and his next plan.
All I can say is that it's a good time to be a comic book movie fan! Things have come a mighty long way from when I was a kid in the 70s.
To each his own I guess, I have never really found Ultron all that interesting. As much as I tire of the whole Loki-Thor thing, at least Loki has style. Ultron is a suped up dalek, "Exterminate!"
Loki has to fight smart. Watching him do that was a lot more interesting than the usual villain vs team MO of "I am so powerful your attacks do nothing to me!" (until you learn an important lesson about teamwork and then suddenly the attacks do something)

Ultron is a super-dalek, but he also has tons of sicko daddy issues, oedipal complexes, self-reinvention and evolution abilities... the real issue is how far they go with his 'machine consciousness' idea from later books, which makes him functionally unkillable because his mind just transfers to an essentially infinite sequence of new bodies or systems.
If they just ran Ultron as a killer robot, then yes he'd be boring, but I think he has more to him than that. YMMV.
Just got back from it....I have to ay it definitrly lived up to the hype that has been building since the scene at the end of the credits of Iron Man.
saw it opening day- think the movie was awesome. cant wait to see whats next.

I don't really know how they could have done a better Avengers movie. Objectively there were some issues, especially near the front end, but I laughed and appreciated the ride so much, I'd definitely say it was the best time I've had in a theater in a long ass time, and definitely a film that was made better by appreciating alongside the rest of the house. A lot of laughs, action that was fairly relentless, but somehow nicely punctuated with the laughter and plot points that it somehow didn't get old for me.
I never thought they'd be able to pull it off :)

I wondered if Whedon read PAD's last issue of the Incredible Hulk. That's kind of what he did in Rick's Flashback in that issue. Bruce would jump off a building, the Hulk would be the one who landed, etc. Between Bruce's method of dealing with the Hulk and the transformation sequence against the Leviathan at the end, he did seem to be somewhat in 'control.
Of course I liked the 'Professor' Hulk as a unified mind, instead of another persona as they ret-conned.
No show that can't even manage to stay on the air for a single season gets to contend for that title.Wait a minute - there are people who do not think it is the greatest science fiction show of all time?

@Freehold and Grey Lensman- When you show the episodes out of order and preempt them almost every other week for sports or reality show #12345, its hard to build a following. And when you've sprung for an essentially lifesize replica of the ship's decks and CGI, you want to see instant returns. Firefly isn't an instant gratification show. You watch the characters build and grow, and then look back and realize how awesome the show really is.

Avengers was absolutely phenomenal. I'm planning on going to see it again sometime, this time in IMAX. Hopefully I'll pick up on some of the things I missed the first go-around. ^_^

The Avengers really worked. Whedon did a masterful job putting so many characters together without really leaving anyone out. And yes, Hawkeye was well represented. I still don't get the Whedon hate. Whedon did create one of the greatest works of fiction in my lifetime (Firefly). But I want beat you up over it! Personally, I was stoked when I heard Whedon was at the helm. Avengers was a fantastic movie. The second best movie I have seen this year. (The best was John Carter.)

I saw this movie on Saturday.
I was very pleased with it.
On a side note, they showed a trailer for the SpiderMan reboot, that actually showed the sarcasm Peter Parker displays in the comics.
I hope I'm as happy with that movie as I was with Avengers.

Sunday morning will be my Avengers time. I still hate crowds.We tried that. Our Sunday morning 10AM showing was almost sold out. :)
As is I'd preordered my ticket, and was glad I did so. I got there a half hour early, and there was a line. The theater was almost completely full by the time the movie started. I even moved over to allow a family to sit around me (I wasn't going over to the very edge of the row out of kindness.)

OFF TOPIC on Firefly.
Unfortunately when Firefly first ran on Friday nights of Fox, I was only able to catch a couple of episodes. I liked it, but didn't think anything special about it. Later the full 10 or so episode ran on Syfy. I happened to catch just about all of them. Then I saw Serenity. I was major league hooked. Joss Whedon is a genius with an ensemble cast. (He didn't do too bad with the Avengers either.) The interaction between the crew, the constantly on edge situations, the frontier like environments made this unlike anything before. Each time I watched something else would hit me, whether a bit of dialog, a look on an actors face, or just the bazaar settings. Looking back, it is one of the best 10 episodes ever produced for TV. YMMV. Add the incredible Serenity made on a shoe string budget, and you have some of the best fiction on film in my life time. Again YMMV.

Slightly off-topic - all through the last battle I was thinking "how cool would it be if Marvel owned all of their movie rights?" I mean, we could have seen Punisher blasting away alongside Captain America, or Spider-Man swinging in to save Iron Man at the last minute.

As the series progresses, Cap will be less of a "man out of his time" and should start to be the glue that holds a group of powerful personalities together.

The point of Cap in the last battle was not so much of him being a Super-soldier and kicking butt, in which case he was totally outclassed by Thor, Iron man, and the Hulk, but his grasp of tactics and strategy. You go here, you there, you there. Fall back and form a perimeter, move the civilians out through the subway, and Hulk, Smash! That is where Captain America really shines through.
I got that quite readily, I just don't think it makes good cinema (at least in the context of a superhero movie). Dramatically, it doesn't matter what CA does because in the context of the action on screen the bad guys are seemingly limitless, omnipresent, and without a cohesive strategy themselves. Why couldn't Cap be a great leader AND contribute physically? I'm sure Whedon could have devised some sort of maguffin of which Cap could take tactical advantage...
