Reading summaries, I wonder if Eric's going to a) flip sides or b) take a third party approach.
I think what bothers me about Utopia is that a) Cyke shot first and b) their plan seems to be "Let the Phoenix get here, and everything will be better."
The Avengers seem to have multiple plans going on a) Contain Hope (not the best thought out plan) b) Contain the Phoenix (kind of a crazy plan, but still) b1) Buy time b2) Gather as much data as possible so Tony can build a plan C.
With Rachel and Quintein Quire off the board (and I assume the Cucoos) communication with the Phoenix before it takes a host seems to be off the table.

I'd be on cykes side in this if the writers (who all apparently still hate hate cyclops.) didn't give him and wolverine a personality switch. Cyke hasn't been cyke in many, many, many years.
Actually Cyclops HAS been Cyclops all this time. He just evolved from a stiff ramrod kid to a true Jerk Adult. Just look at the way he treated Madeline Pryor. It's no wonder that she turned pure Evil, if Cyclops is supposed to represent what it is to be Good.
And on the meta side, it's simply a recognition that Wolverine is a far more popular character with the audience. Heck, the latest cartoon is titled "Wolverine and the X-Men."

Agreed. Please don't buy into the Cyke hate, it's largely manufactured by the writers, who also hate the character.
Everything, including the characters themselves is manufactured by the writers. But there's a good chain of continuity between the Cyclops of old and the Cyclops of today. It's simply that he's walked a road that changed him from Nerd to Jerk.

Wow. I cant be the only person that gets Cyclops and why he's acting the way he's acting.
After watching his people pushed to the edge of extinction he's eager NOT have that ever happen ever again. He's a leader and he really cant rely on anyone outside of group. I get that absolutely.
Do I think playing with the Phoenix Force is like playing Russian Roulette with five out of six chambers loaded? Hell, yes. But after recent events he's desperate.
You know what if he has to take the Malcolm X route (meaning he's not going to look for a fight, but if the sapiens come looking for one he's gonna defend himself with no remorse) then so be it. Where were the Avengers and SHEILD everytime some anti-mutant crazy or the Sentinels attacked the X-men.
Screw that noise. Do what you need to do Cyke...

Well, in X-Sanction it was stated that the even-worse future where Cable spent some time was caused by the Avengers successfully locking up Hope before the Phoenix showed up, so that has to be taken into account. So Captain America showing up and demanding that the girl get turned over wasn't going to go over very well.....

Of course, if the Marvel Universe in general and the X-Men in particular should have learned anything it is that if you try and change on bad future you usually end up with one that tends to be even worse. And don't forget that Bishop said that Hope will cause a really bad future as well, so it's really a Catch 22 for the X-Men.

Am I the only one that remembers Steve rogers going into the negative zone to try and save Cyclopse and hope? Or that most of the x-men stayed out of the civil war because as Cyke said "It wasent there fight" Well right back at Cyke.
Also the more I read the side comics the more insane cyclopse plan seems to be (Considering the Phonix force just blew up a planet of 9 Billion people on the way to Earth) Also the letter he sends out calling captin America and the Avengers Jack booted thugs (Despite him being the one who formed X-force as an assasination squad and when Hope asks if she has a say in what is happening he tells her no)

Nope, don't remember Cap doing that either.
Also re: Civil War, weren't the X-men basically under house arrest being guarded by sentinels 24-7? Even if they wanted to help Cap, they would have been pulling the Sentinels into that fight as well.
Forming an assassination squad to kill targets who are a DIRECT THREAT to your way of life is nothing new.
Like I said I see both sides and I've been reading the Avengers books for the past few years over the x-men so I get what Cap and Tony are trying to do. But in this case I empathize with Cyclops and the x-men more. Cyke is in a desparate situation and he's going to do what he has to to protect and save his people.

Both sides, as always, are doing what they think is right. The difference? Cyclops is working to protect all mutants. Fair enough. The Avengers? They're trying to protect the planet. That includes mutants too, last time I checked. Are both sides making some big assumptions? Yes, yes they are. Will either side be right? Nope. Will there be a big fight? Probably :)

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
IMO, the best option is probably actually trying to get Hope to the Phoenix well before it gets to Earth. Getting it an actual host is probably the only way to get any semblance of control (if any is possible) over the thing, and doing it as far away as possible would allow for a "Plan B" if it doesn't work. However, this doesn't seem to be on anyone's radar so far.

I'm sure she'll get Jobbed, but between the soulsword breaking his spells, her own magic, and Cerebu- er S'ym and Nast'rih, it should be one sided.I disagree to a point. I think it would be a fight that strange could win, but it wouldn't be easy by any means. He'd have to draw upon his experience and skills as being a former sorcerer supreme of earth to beat magik in her realm. He'll probably win, but he won't be pimp walking off her plane so much as limping.

You know what if he has to take the Malcolm X route
Actually he's taking the reverse. Malcom X in his own words, began life as a thug and a racist bigot and evolved to a strict road of self-dicipline and even handed set of standards to everyone regardless of race.
Cyclops on the other hand was the responsible and ethical pillar of the X-Men through several incarnations of the team who's decided to go Magneto.
The thing is, Marvel has this idea that it's main storyline should be about Hero vs. Hero with occasionally one or more of them sometimes fighting a Villain. Avengers Vs. X-Men has the real possiblity of turning into the same kind of idiotic storyline that Civil War wound up being. In where the reader was supposed to sympathise for the pro-registration side of the movement despite the fact that just about everyone on that side was either a Jerkass, a Thief with a Badge, or a Complete Monster.

I was miffed they killed Cassie too, and bascially disbanded the YA,
Thing is, I don't think Patriot (or the others) would fit so much in AA. At least it seems Kate will be in the Hawkeye series.
Agreed - I really hope they find a way to keep going with the YA - one of the best marvel titles in a long time.

No. I think you missed my point entirely. I'm not talking about Malcolm's origin at all. I'm talking about his perspective on dealing with a majority that HATES you simply because you and yours exist.
"It doesn't mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time, I am not against using violence in self-defense. I don't call it violence when it's self-defense, I call it intelligence."
-Malcolm X
As I get older I've come to realize that MLK might have been not at all what we needed as a leader and the more "Magneto" men like Malcolm would have been the better off many of us (and by "US" I mean African-Americans) now might be in this country.
So yeah, still with Team Cyclops.

NO MORE AVENGERS
Feh, like a) that would last.* and b) So is it going to be a 'phoenix augmented Wanda'? Since they just got done saying in Children's Crusade that Wanda can't do things like this w/o help?

So what about the series now?
I'm loving this event thus far especially #09-
#10 was a bit weaker but all in all I like what's happening.
P.S.
My take on the event is both teams were wrong, and distrust, fear and militaristic mindset were the reason for the whole mess. Thus the need for X-Men and Avengers to trust each other and collaborate.
