Father Charlatan (Spoiler)

So I've read this haunt over and over and I just don't see how it can be fun for the affected player. I also don't like to split up my group so I am looking for alternatives to this. What was your experience with this encounter? How have you run it? I would like to keep it subtle, since it would not fit Father Charlatan if he were just another ghost to kill. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I just listened to this podcast on the adventure yesterday. They mentioned how when they ran this encounter it kind of killed the momentum and there was no immediacy for the people who weren't "dead".

I haven't run the encounter yet, but it occurred to me that it might actually work better if you don't split up the party for it. Sure, they're going to figure out what's going on, but so what? I think the encounter could still be cool, maybe even cooler in a way if they all know (ooc) what's really happening. Better to trade mystery for suspense as opposed to having the bulk of your group bored while you're in the other room with a single player.

Just my thoughts. :)

The book even comments on it, the effect of the haunt can very widely dependent on when it happens. For us it was triggered during the Piper's haunt. So the party was hounded by skeletons, Striges, the Piper, some music, and then the paladin falls over covered in ghostly chains. So it was very much we are dying and the paladin is dying.
