Simple question regarding generating a character

Rules Questions

My friends and I are starting to migrate from the beginner's box rules to the core rules and I'm generating a character at the moment. I'm wondering exactly what the "Hit Dice" are, listed under each class section. A fighter for example is 1d10. Does this relate to hit points? In the beginner's box we just started with what I think is Max Hit Dice + CON, and I just wanted to be sure that this is what the "Hit Dice" was referring to, as well as checking whether we can just go for Max Hit Dice + CON for the first level. :)

Yes, hit dice is what they get for HP every level. And yes, all Pathfinder characters are assumed to have max HP at level 1.

yes, hit dice is the number of of dice you rolled for the character.
Your figher gains 1d10 (ten sided dice) plus his Con (modifier!) every level. (at third level he would have 3 HD, as he rolled three times in total) The first level, every player character (not NPC or monsters) gain as if they rolled the maximum.

As you're probably new, there are lots of houserules for rolling those hp, sometimes it's just the mean (6 for fighter) or the player can pick, or something like that. This is because rolling a 1 the first few level can really be bad, and you could see a wizard with 10 con being tougher than the fighter with 14 con.

One of the houserules I use, just in case of low rolls, is that players have the option of instead of rolling their new die, to instead roll their entire pool they've gained up to that point in one big sheet crushing roll and hoping it's higher than their old total. (Possibly taking the lowest roll out and assuming it gets max instead, for the first level boost.)
