Ok, simple enough question: why did Pathfinder use the name for their summoner's buddy when we already had an Elder Eidolon from Lords of Madness in 3.5? Are--perhaps--they related? Are the Summoner's Eidolon's a plot to overcome the Prime from within, by using unwitting dupes (the Summoner) as the Fifth Column of ancient and terrible Elder Eidolons? Do they have a Plan? And are WE on their menu for digestion?
Perhaps for the sake of all non-aberrant life we should put all Summoners to the sword, while we still can.

The word has a definition (link) and they are 'related' because they both used the same word which refers to a spirit.

Nope; I mentioned in some other thread where this topic came up that the elder eidolon (and the rimefire eidolon from Frostburn and the rogue eidolon from Monster Manual 2) have no relation at all to summoner eidolons.
The only thing that the three D&D monsters have in common, apart from the word "eidolon" in their name, is that I designed all three of them. I quite like the word eidolon, you see, and it was a great word to use for all three of those monsters.
Jason Bulmahn was the one who initially proposed the use of the word "eidolon" for the summoner pet, and at first I resisted it because in my mind, I'd already "claimed" that word for use on certain monsters... but since those monsters are all things we can't use anyway since none of them are open content... it didn't take me long to relent.

I thought it might be something like that. But now that the official answer is out of the way (thanks again, Dennis and James), let's stoke the fires of an anti-summoner cabal!

EDIT: Oh, and Mr. Jacobs? That elder eidolon is a beast! Scared my players out of their seats. Thank you.
