Advanced warning that your friendly neighborhood card-reader will be on vacation starting 27th June all the way through to 17th July. We will be taking our first big ol' vacation in six years and swanning off to Hawaii (both Kauai and Oahu). Our first trip to the US, and despite needing about 16 hours in a plane to get there - we are still super excited :)
However since we'll be travelling with only an i-pad for computer support both my predeliction for sesquipedalian loquaciousness and the relative alacrity and frequency of posts shall suffer most terribly during that time. So in essence Mihai will be relatively inactive while I'm off sinking deep into Kalua pig, malasadas and loco moco. Fear not for I shall return fully recharged and reinforced for the onward push towards Saventh Yhi and the horrors of needing to choose between six parties that wish to furnish him with money.
If in the case that DMPC or PCPC will be required, Mihai's responses will tend to follow the following logic:
1) Bit o' Luck on who can best use it.
2) Channel / heal till people stop bleeding.
3) Feel free to make use of his +12 Diplo when warranted.

DM Stephen |

Maui is one of my favorite destinations. Been there several times and thinking of returning next year in fact, although we might do the Big island instead.
Be sure to take the southern road to get to the seven pools of Hana. You get to see the lava rocks and a nicely rural area of the island, it's a little different view.
If anyone gets car sick don't take the north road, they will be throwing up for about 2 hours :].

Tragershen |

That sounds like an awesome trip. I've never been to the islands myself, but I would love to go some time. Next up for us will probably be a cruise to Alaska next year.

Tragershen |

Sooooo.... It is looking less and less like we'll be partnering with the government, and more and more like we'll be partering with someone who can help get us out of town. Fast. And discreetly.

Niɱ |

We aren't quite past the tipping point of no return... no blood has been shed... (yet) :)
And it bears repeating/pointing out that we were approached by Lady Daugustana, representing one (of presumably numerous) faction within the government, while we are currently at odds with some of the Chief of Justice's men. Another faction altogether. :)
It is conceivable that we can be against one faction and with another. The politically savvy amongst us can even likely manipulate the situation to a tenable resolution. ;)
The real question is... why is Mr. Sweetman stirring the pot so hard right before he goes on lengthy vacation to Hawaii? :D

Anton Green |

I got the impression that Mihai was pulling a civil disobedience, nonviolent resistance kind of ploy. However, that starts "trouble"; and the way that we "solve" "trouble" often sprays enough blood and guts to strain Trag's prestidigitation. I'm just trying to figure out how to re-insert Anton plausibly.

Are you saying that Anton is currently not present during this standoff?!
Given Anton is the primary reason the devil was removed from the Shiv and brought to Eleder... Nim would be extremely displeased that Anton has dodged out and left those that did not vouch for Grolick to take the blame.

No, I meant I had writer's block. Happened at the same time to both of the characters that I've written the most for. (It doesn't help that I started a new job recently, so I'm also adjusting to less free time and a different sleep schedule.) Anyway, I can't think of anything to do or say, so I just wrote something to at least be present.

Mihai Soarta |

Mihai ok move things on. Anton was right about motive, Mihai is a gypsy at heart and wanted to push things. Then we can complain about mistreatment if we get roughed up... Haven't checked thread as net super crap, so sorry if pot got a little too vigorously stirred :)

Mihai Soarta |

Read now, Mihai asked to see official papers proving they were officially summoned, by who, etc. shown those he would come... But would walk with the speed of a geriatric eighty year old until they either dragged, carried, or sprung for a carriage

Mihai Soarta |

As a little background, having a spell cast upon Mihai - especially an invasive compulsive one such as Zone of Truth requires to my mind showing a mental and spiritual deference. This Mihai would not agree to. Also, he is being treated as a criminal first, person second - to which he takes severe umbrage.
Mihai has been given zero reason to believe that fair treatment will be offered or given, and as a Varisi he is naturally skeptical and repulsed by any form of art that requires submission.
Looks like he's going to jail...

Anton continues to prefer the government. He would also still rather not try and play two sides, but it looks like he's outvoted.
I will respond to Trag sometime this week. I have work and a new game, so might not be able to until Thursday or the weekend.

No rush whatsoever. There shouldn't be anything game impacting in there, and the main thing was the contribution to the party fund.

Aedalis Omathi |

150 GP- Scroll of Scare
40GP- Scribe Cost
150GP- Scroll of Glitterdust
40GP- Scribe Cost
150GP- Scroll of Fester
40GP- Scribe Cost
375GP- Scroll of Heroism
90GP- Scribe Cost
25GP- Scroll of Detect Secret Doors
10GP- Scribe Cost

Tragershen |

I didn't think witches had the scribe cost to add a spell from a scroll to their familiar's list. I thought they just burned it, made it into paste or brew and fed it to the critter.

Tragershen |

Unless I was missing something, it looks like it is generally cheaper to get spells as a witch when compared to a wizard. There is no cost for familiars sharing spells between each other (whereas wizards copying from spellbooks have the scribe costs) and a witch taking a spell from a scroll doesn't have a cost (though if they fail the check to understand the spell, the scroll is lost whereas the wizard can try again).
And if you'd prefer, Tragershen would have been willing to scribe scrolls of glitterdust and/or detect secret doors at cost, halving the cost of those two.

Niɱ |

I don't believe I have marked off Nim's party fund contribution. He was going to give 200 now and 300 later?

Mihai Soarta |

Mihai has now returned to civilization and am reading up on the thread to see what I missed.
Oahu and Kauai were indeed most excellent and nascent plans are in place for spending of accrued long service leave time on Kauai. 16 hours in a plane yesterday and 6 hours time difference to acclimatise so I'm somewhat of a walking dead at present.. but brain work good enough for writy typy words on computer.

DM Stephen |

I love Kauai...did you do the Maui downhill? I successfully wiped out at 25mph on a bike near the bottom of the mountain...let's just say salt water was not my friend for the rest of the vacation!
Next year we are going to Kona to visit the volcano, hopefully I won't fall in...welcome back! I will plan to move things forward tomorrow while you make your final purchases and plans.

Mihai Soarta |

Heh - nah, only really had time for Kauai this trip as we spent a good 11 days on Waikiki (relatives of wife's family were there for a good 9 days of that). Saw some adverts for the Maui downhill and my interest was indeed piqued - good lookouts on the way down?
Big Island is somewhere that we both really want to go and spend some time - but we figured waiting a few years would be best so that the kids get the best out of the time (lugging a 14 month old round volcanic sites didn't seem like a good idea ;)

Niɱ |

Possible Mantis list:
(1) Huge Scorpion Venom (200gp)
(2) Baneberry (180gp)
(2) Blue Whinnis (240gp)
(1) Drow Poison (75gp)
(1) Thornapple (90gp)
(10) Antiplague (500gp)
(10) Antitoxin (500gp)
(13) Vermin repellent (65gp)
(6) Soothe Syrup (150gp)
TOTAL = 2000gp
Thoughts?
If we feel we need more Antitoxin or Antiplague, or there are other things to add, we can purchase more with party funds.
Nim's Mundane list and personal purchases to follow.
Anton, please top up Nim's party fund contribution to a full 500gp share. I will deduct the full amount from Nim seeing as he now has additional funds from the factions. :)
Suggest we load up on acid, alchemist's fire etc with party funds... as well as consider a few wands for purchase.

Mihai Soarta |

No strong feelings on the Mantis list - who would be using the poisons?
I'm also happy for Mihai to supercharge the 'Party Fund' with most of his gifted cash, so that there is more to splash out on wands. Lets see how much we end up with before we spend it all.

Niɱ |

I am thinking Anton mostly... and perhaps Nim given the right situation. Just trying to give us options for perhaps bypassing or weakening a really tough encounter. Sneak up and put to sleep or sap strength kind of thing. *shrugs*
Not really a big deal, but I just can't see spending the whole 2000gp on just Antitoxin and Antiplague. :)

Niɱ |

Not meaning it to be an all the time kind of thing... just another tool in the tool box for the right occasion. :)

Tragershen |

I think the selection looks good. When combined with the potions we have and characters' healing abilities, I think we are positioned decently for the trek.

Anton Green |

Possible Mantis list:
(1) Huge Scorpion Venom (200gp)
(2) Baneberry (180gp)
(2) Blue Whinnis (240gp)
(1) Drow Poison (75gp)
(1) Thornapple (90gp)
(10) Antiplague (500gp)
(10) Antitoxin (500gp)
(13) Vermin repellent (65gp)
(6) Soothe Syrup (150gp)
TOTAL = 2000gpThoughts?
Now that I've had a chance to take a closer look, I don't see the point of thornapple with its 10 minute onset; and I'd like to add a purple worm poison to the list, for the DC 24 and 2 saves. It would be like a nuclear option for someone who's clearly evil and too strong to take on directly: snipe, wait six rounds, then attack. Of course, that's also partly because I can't imagine needing more than five each antitoxin and antiplague; if you think we'll need more, then never mind.
(2) Baneberry (180gp)
(1) Blue Whinnis (120gp)
(2) Drow Poison (150gp)
(1) Large Scorpion Venom (200gp)
(1) Purple Worm Poison (700gp)
(5) Antiplague (250gp)
(5) Antitoxin (250gp)
(10) Vermin repellent (50gp)
(4) Soothe Syrup (100gp)
TOTAL = 2000gp

Niɱ |

Taking a second look...
Baneberry confuses me... frequency 1/min for 5 min but the paralysis only lasts 1d3 rounds on each failed save? Is this a typo? Or what am I missing? :P
I think we can take either the drow poison or the blue whinnis, but we don't need both. It is the unconsciousness we are after.
And don't discount the antiplague and toxin too quickly. DM did warn us to stock up. :)
We can buy extra with party funds... in fact we can buy all remedies with party funds and only get "evil" or blackmarket things from the Mantises for the full 2000gp. ;)

Anton Green |

With baneberry, the paralysis is just icing on the ability damage cake, and the slow frequency is what keeps it cheap. If what we want is unconsciousness, then I think that drow poison is better than blue whinnis, since it only takes one failed save to put them under for a minute (which should usually be long enough); blue whinnis has +1 DC, but gives them two chances to save before taking a nap.
I'm rethinking the Str poisons, since they'd probably just sit there unused. My answer to the question "Is it worth hundreds of gold to slowly weaken this foe (y/n)?" would almost always be "Umm... maybe? Not sure..." If we really stock up on drow poison, then Anton won't hesitate to actually use it. Also, I expect poison to be more of a problem than disease (just assuming).
Revised proposal:
(15) Drow Poison (1125gp)
(5) Antiplague (250gp)
(10) Antitoxin (500gp)
(3) Soothe Syrup (75gp)
(10) Vermin Repellent (50gp)
TOTAL = 2000gp

I will be camping from Sunday to Saturday and will likely have little to no internet connection. Please DMNPC until I return.

Seems more like a tool than a tool box that way. ;)
Drow poison has such a low DC and a minute frequency... would rather have a variety I would think. How about this?
(4) Blue Whinnis (480gp)
(4) Large Scorpion Venom (800gp)
(1) Purple Worm Poison (700gp)
(4) Vermin repellent (20gp)
TOTAL = 2000gp
Then we buy the rest from party funds
Antiplague
Antitoxin
Soothe Syrup
And my issues with Baneberry is the Frequency being 1/min for 5 min but one of the Effects being paralyzed for 1d3 rounds and the cure being 2 saves. Doesn't that seem odd? Every min if you fail a save you are paralyzed for a few seconds then are fine until the next (possibly) failed save? Am I missing something? Errata? Error in HeroLab? :P
Otherwise it seems a good choice imo. :)

Anton Green |

Again, I'd rather have drow poison for unconsciousness, since then they only have to fail a DC 13 Fort save once, versus failing a DC 14 Fort save twice with blue whinnis. True, it will usually not work; but it's cheap enough to use indiscriminately against a horde of commoners (or housecats).
I get what you're saying about baneberry; and what I'm saying is that no, the brevity of the paralysis doesn't seem that odd to me for a poison that does multiple attribute damage, requires two saves, and only costs 90 gp. Your representation is accurate for what I'm reading on pg. 14 of Guide to the River Kingdoms. It looks to me like a plot device that would mostly see use by NPCs, and mostly on food.

Niɱ |

No time to post more atm... how about this then?
(8) Drow Poison (600gp)
(3) Large Scorpion Venom (700gp)
(1) Purple Worm Poison (700gp)
TOTAL = 2000gp

Niɱ |

(5) Drow Poison (x75=375gp)
(2) Huge Scorpion Venom (x200=400gp)
(1) Purple Worm Poison (700gp)
(6) Antiplague (x50=300gp)
(6) Antitoxin (x50=300gp)
(6) Soothe Syrup (x25=150gp)
(6) Vermin repellent (x5=30gp)
TOTAL = 2255gp
So 255gp would come from party funds...
Good? Yes? :}

Niɱ |

Just to let you know, I am gone camping from the 24th to the 2nd. Internet/cellular will be spotty at best. I will try to post but if I am holding things up please DMNPC Nim.
Thanks
