Although player can use prestige class from closed content, not many prestige class are available for pathfinder. There were so many for 3rd ed that's it's nearly impossible to create new one that won't look in some way as i closed contend one. Archtype solve that problem by altering a whole core class into a 20 level prestige like class.
This was a great idea and it solve a lot of play style problem. But there are still a few character that can't be play. warpriest and ultimate magus are good exemple. in the case of warpriest creating a divine archetype of the eldrich knight that allow divine spellcaster instead of arcane only could solve the problem. in the case of the ultimata magus that is a sorcerer/wizard mix, creating an arcane/arcane mystic theurge
That could open many more character possibility like cleric rogue "divine trickster", priest of nature taking level in a divine(cleric)/divine(druid) version of mystic theurge and many more that an archtype on a core class can't allow.
