They may encounter some conflict with the city guard and council wanting to block off the passages to avoid another Underdark incursion. In the book it is stated that the Stormblades collapse the tunnels, forcing the PCs to find another entrance in Zenith Trajectory. Depending on how secret the party kept the source of the kidnappings, this may or may not come into play.

My group was thinking of doing the same thing but those wretched stormblades collapsed the tunnels and messed up that plan. My DM showed us that it was in the book he was not just being stingy with the loot.

It may seem like a good idea at first but all in all it became too expensive to bother with. from what I remember the LM according to my DM was like a 5K investment that I couldn't afford.
No one else in my party was interested so we just sorta let it fade into the background.
