Deck of Many Things Artwork

Gamer Life General Discussion

I am an Illustration major currently in my Junior year. I hope to do fantasy illustration in the future. For one of our recent projects we were assigned to create a commercial illustration for the field in which we would like to end up working.

Let me know what you think. All criticisms are welcome. (I plan on getting better ;]

Thanks,
James

Personally, I think your artwork is absolutely fantastic. I'm waiting to see what the rest of the deck looks like. I may even have to print out the deck if you finish it, just so that I can have a deck of my own.

Oh it's finished.

;)

I would like to see if paizo would like to post it on their website first.

And THANK YOU for the praise.

Is good art, I hope you will paint all the card

Interesting. I prefer more medieval-illumination style of cards, but this one's nice too.

Ever thought about doing Tarot cards?

The only nitpick I'd have is that the cards themselves look hand-painted, but the title looks computer-generated. Other than that, they're quite nice and very in line with modern fantasy graphics.

It's funny, I put together custom DoMT a couple months ago, for my DM for a particular campaign, but nobody would take a card. Wusses! I've thought for a while that it would be interesting to come up with a DoMT that was actually playable, somehow, as a card game. (Perhaps one with consequences.) Paizo kind of did something with harrow decks, but it's not quite the same as drawing Skull.

I will have to agree here. The title does look computer-generated. Is there any way you could change it to hand-painted? I think it would make them look that much better. Still fantastic, though.

Agree with every already said here, these are great graphics & I'd love to see what you do with further cards.

Absolutely.

I was actually planning on creating my own font for it but i ran out of time (critique is at 3:30)

Thanks for the advice and I will see if I can get on that tonight. After they are done I will post the entire deck.

Sweet! If Paizo doesn't like this I'm boycotting them... (JK I couldn't go a week with that)

So the contact sheets have been assembled. Message me on deviantart or email me at

For a JPEG or PDF of the set.

These are fantastic. I put a deck like this together a while back but this puts me to shame. I've love to see the rest of the cards!

I've seen the full set and It's really very good. Appropriate style and detailed. The only thing I would have liked to see was more of the front side given over to the unique images rather than the black tentacles and english words. (the english itself also limits its appeal to international/multilingual groups. As this is for fantasy, some nonesense symbols would be more than appropriate. But again, they are really good. The above is just one point of view.

If you would like them in another language just provide me with the translations and a bit of time.

I'd be happy to do it.

BornofHate:
Personally, I would like to see french, but my comment was directed more towards a hypothetical audience. A potential supporter might not take the effort to ask you for a translation and then you would lose a potential customer. On top of this, it saves you the effort of going through an unnecessary editing process. This takes extra time to reformat something that wouldn't need it if it had been available without language association in the first place. Again, I'm not a professional in the visual arts, but I do have some experience in the field. Take that for what it's worth.

Here's a french translation I'd like to see (in english alphabetical order):
l'équilibre
le comète
donjon
euryale
le destin
le feu
tromper
le joyau
l'idiot
le bouffon
les clés
le chevalier
la lune
la coquin
ruine
le crâne
l'étoile
du soleil
la serre d'aigle
le trône
vizir
vide

Ill see if I can get a French translation soon.

I do think some type of script is necessary though. Cards like the idiot and the fool might get confused, no? For the most part you are right. I would have liked to come up with a more abstract final piece that was more cryptic looking. However, for ease of use (and to avoid confusion at the table) I opted for the names to be on the cards.

Who knows though, I may revisit the concept if I have time in the future.

(Great advice BTW)

I like these a lot. Very detailed work on all of the pieces. My favorites are "Balance", "Fool", "Rogue", "Skull", and "Talons", but most of the cards look great!

The only one I didn't like that much was "Throne". I can't really put my finger on why, though. Maybe because the throne itself is in the background rather than the foreground?

In either case, great work!
