Raistlin was the reason I kept reading Dragonlance books. Well, that's not entirely true. I really enjoyed Tasselhoff + Fizban as well. But Raist was always the main draw. I found him to be an extremely compelling character. Where I could paint most of the companions in fairly simple strokes (for instance, Tanis = whiny whiner mcwhinerson), I never had that easy of a time with Raistlin.
So, to answer the OP - "loved him".
Encountering Raistlin in a campaign though, that would cause me to poop my pants. Because there is no beating Raistlin. Additionally, there'd suddenly be a character in the game that I liked more than my PC, which would stink.
But yeah, Raistlin is my favorite.

Second to Tas, Raistlin was my favorite DL character too.
In the 3rd grade we had to dress up as our favorite literary character so I dressed up as Tasslehoff. Back then, I was the perfect height/weight ratio to pull it (but no one besides my older friends who played D&D knew who I was).
I think Raistlin as an adversial NPC would be really tough as he was able to fool/beat the greatest wizards and gods alike. It might be interesting to have the PCs initially working for Raistlin and then having to foil one of his plans or a scenario where they accidently steal something for him and are being chased by his allies/minions. That could be fun as you'd be up against Raistlin but not having him directly squish you like a bug.
