Upgrading Bonded Objects in PFS

Hiya fine folks of the Paizo messageboards. I'm creating my first character for PFS - you can probably guess which faction - and have all but settled on the wizard class. In Pathfinder RPG games I'd pick up a bonded object instead of a familiar, mostly because my GM likes killing familiars and animal companions, and then an item creation feat a little down the line to give it some extra utility (Bonded ring becomes Bonded Ring of Feather Falling is the first example I can think of). However, that option is not available in PFS.

My question is this: is there a way to upgrade a bonded object in a similar manner in PFS, without taking the item creation feats yourself? For example, could you request or buy the upgrade from an NPC, patron or otherwise, between sessions? Apologies if this is covered somewhere in the rules.

First of all, welcome to PFS! Glad to have you with us.

Now then, yes, you may upgrade a bonded object, paying the difference between the cost of various items. For example, a +1 weapon is 2k, and a +2 weapon is 8k. You can upgrade a +1 to a +2 for 6k. Hope this helps, and enjoy the ride!

If I understand your post, you've been screwing yourself out of feats...

A wizard can add additional magic abilities to his bonded

object as if he has the required item creation feats and if
he meets the level prerequisites of the feat. For example,
a wizard with a bonded dagger must be at least 5th level
to add magic abilities to the dagger (see the Craft Magic
Arms and Armor feat in Chapter 5). If the bonded object
is a wand, it loses its wand abilities when its last charge is
consumed, but it is not destroyed and it retains all of its
bonded object properties and can be used to craft a new
wand. The magic properties of a bonded object, including
any magic abilities added to the object, only function for
the wizard who owns it. If a bonded object’s owner dies, or
the item is replaced, the object reverts to being an ordinary
masterwork item of the appropriate type.

You don't need any Item crafting feats to upgrade your bonded object. You're treated as if you have the feat if you're the right level for the feat. And it is the one way a PFS character can make magic items.

Well well, looks like my eyes slid over that little "as" every time I made a PF wizard. I'm glad I decided to post now.

Thanks!

Note that the prices quoted are incorrect, although the concept is correct. To upgrade a bonded weapon to a +1 weapon is the creation cost, 1k, not 2k. To upgrade a +1 weapon to a +2 weapon would be the difference between the cost of a +2 weapon (4,000) and the original price (1,000); 3,000 gp. This is because item creation costs 1/2 price versus the market price in the Magic Item Section.

Remember that this can only be done with a bonded item, and there is no other way of getting item creation in Pathfinder Society Organized Play.

My understanding (possibly wrong) is that a 1st level wizard still can't enhance an arcane bond ring himself (for example) because Forge Ring requires a 7th level caster. But he could get it turned into a ring of feather fall by paying 2,000 gp and getting someone else to do it.

Of course, the rules are a bit hazy...

That's how I understand it. And by paying someone else (full price) the enchantment wouldn't go away if you changed your bonded item.

Along the same line of questioning... Does a bonded item get arround the rule for PFS where you don't have access to the item creation rules? "Neither the craft feats nor the item creation section of the magic items chapter in the Core Rulebook are legal for play." (Guide to Pathfinder Society pg.8)

Save that's it's not legal. What you'd have to do is that if you can't qualify for the item creation by your caster level, you'd have to purchase the ring at full price and then bond to it, paying the appropriate cost if this was not your first bond.

Brock recently added to the pathfinder society FAQ on upgrading bonded items FAQ > pathfinder society for the OP, in the upper right hand corner of the menu. or this link

you get the 50% discount on the first upgrade of the item only.
amulet of natural armor: 1000 to make a +1 amulet, +6000 to upgrade it to +2

weapon: +1000gp to make it +1, standard +6000gp to upgrade it beyond that from +1 to +2.

so its a lot nicer to get a ring or wand, where you can get half off the entire item, rather than just half off the first step in enchanting it.

Would my exploiter wizard be able to upgrade his bonded mask? Would he be able to select that Arcane Discovery at all? Thanks for any input.
