May He Rest in Peace

(Even though I am PC, I am being sincere here, he would have made a good opponent for Harper, and he cleaned out the Liberals and the Blocke in the elections)

A sad loss indeed, I had a great deal of respect for the man and his ideas.

Let me just say that although I didn't like Mr Layton's delivery style in the beginning (he seemed like a used care salesman to me) I usually liked his message. In the last election he really seemed like someone that, if we Canadians had that option, I'd vote to be Prime Minister. I was saddened to see him slowed by cancer and when I saw those pictures of a gaunt Layton I knew things were very bad indeed. Still, I was shocked and saddened to hear about his death. He will be missed.

RIP Mr Layton.

Here's my favourite Jack moment.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I too was very sad to hear this news. I think he was a great leader for the NDP.

These were his final words to Canadians as posted on his Facebook page.

Dear Canadians:

Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

I was incredibly saddened to hear this news. I liked Jack Layton, and I know whoever takes over for him will have big shoes to fill.

An inspiring leader...now we'll have to have a by election in my riding.

Totally not fair. The world needs more politicians like the late Mr. Layton, not less.

Agreed. I didn't always agree with him but I never felt he was saying what I wanted to hear. He was sincere in his beliefs and never seemed to need hide his feelings with double speak.
