Authority encouraging a Chaotic character

Advice

We are playing a game in a setting very similar to the HBO series Deadwood. A new PC brought is a Chaotic Good Alchemist. So you have a Chaotic charter who signed up because it was the only way he could fight horrible evil working under a fairly tight organized group. They think (so far) love him and haven't really gave him directions beyond, "Keep up the great work!" He has nothing to rebel against. The few times he's sort of tried the answer has been, "Knock yourself out," regarding what ever his idea was.

Besides just getting bored and wondering off, which I don't think a good aligned character would do if innocent people needed him, how would a CG guy react to this?

As long as the group and their "charter" follow the things the character wants to do anyway there's really no reason to rebel against it.

Chaotic characters aren't against any type of rule, they just see no particular need to follow someone else's rule if it goes against what they, themselves, think they should do.

There's really no reason a chaotic character can't fit right into a tight knit organized group, as long as its organization fits right along with what he (or she) wants to do anyway.

A chaotic good person is usually good first and chaotic second. They can be just as conflicted about the two parts of their alignment as a lawful good paladin can.

They could try to join the government, especially as its being founded, in order to make sure that the government is as small, unobtrusive, and fair as possible

Instead of worrying so much on how to properly enact alignment, looking at it from the other side of the pond always seems more productive to me, and is actually more in line with how Alignment is described in the rules: something for the GM to worry about/ track, and that is a MEASUREMENT of the character´s actions (i.e. NOT a determinant, that is their own free will and personality).

In this case, I don´t see why the character would have a problem... Unless they really are getting bored somehow.
Characters aren´t ´Alignment Nationalists´ who fight for the glowing letters of CG vs. all other Alignments,
they have their own judgements and preferences and tendencies, and go where those lead them.
(perhaps some very small minority indeed are Alignment Nationalists, but that is really just their personal preference, not an outcome of having the Alignment they have)
