Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines going cheap on Steam for the weekend

Video Games

VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE - BLOODLINES is going for £3.75 for the weekend (as compared to its normal price of £14.99; American prices differ). For pocket money, it's a no-brainer to try out the classic and critically-acclaimed (but also somewhat bugged) RPG.

You can get it from here.

Of course, you can also patch the game using community-made mods and patches which close up unfinished quests, fix broken dialogue trees and so on. The problem is that there are two distinct communities working on separate trees of updates and patches, and these communities hate one another and will flame one another to a burnt-out crisp at the drop of a hat. So my approach is to try the game out in its vanilla state and only venture into that minefield later on. Rock Paper Shotgun recently highlighted one of the patches and the resulting nuclear explosion in the comments is very, erm, interesting.

I saw this earlier today (on Steam). It's slightly frustrating to remember buying the game for $30 a decade ago only to find it available through download at $5 (US). WoD enthusiasts will really enjoy the title. I can't count the number of playthroughs I've done. The game's solid story-wise, but tech problems can be an issue and 64bit buyers should aware of real problems ahead.

A sensational game; I would have loved a sequel.

Well, that little patchwar brings this amazing game even closer to the original pen and paper experience ;)

This was a great game and still is. The mansion at the beginning is one of the best haunted house experiences I've seen in gaming.

Great game, if you like Vampires or games with immersive storylines, you should check it out.

Still one of the best CRPGs in my opinion. I really love that you can play with a wide variety of playstyles (and character decisions), although the last 25% of the game tend to be very hard if you didn't raise any of the combat skills...

Out of curiosity, why? You got entertained by it for years that people buying it today didn't.

Would you actually have waited until now to buy it if, in 2004, they had said "BTW, we'll lower the price to $5 in 7 years, so you may want to wait" ??

Like I said, I'm just curious...

No I wouldn't have waited. Everytime I see a massive price reduction, I bitterly chuckle about what I originally paid for it. Some tiny, unreasonable part of me wants to buy the title and receive an equivalent rebate with regard to what I first paid for it. I'm not losing any sleep over it; that's why I said it was slightly frustrating.

Hell, I'd buy it again if I knew that all the bugs were fixed and incomplete sections were patched and ready to go. Otherwise, I'll make do with memories of a fun game I played religiously (and only realized most of the problems after I stopped playing it).

Got it back when it was first released. One of the few games I repeatedly played through even with all the horrible bugs.

Nothing better than playing Bloodlines as a Malkavian!

And the fan patches are awesome as well. I recently played the game and used the Malkavian archetype (or whatever they call it) "Ninja"

The flavour text was too good to pass up. "You're an unseen warrior and schooled in martial arts. However, you cannot use guns, because they're anathema to you. And ducks. Ducks are anathema, too!"

I played a Malkavian the first time around too. Those little crazy headtrips that pop up during the game are too good to pass up. I used to hang around my apartment a lot, just to see if the TV would start talking to me again. If I had to pop away from the computer for a bit, I'd send him out on the dance floor of the nearest club.

That turned out to be a bit of a problem. Apparently my vamp was pretty popular. One time I came back and all the other dancers had formed a complete ring around him and I couldn't get out...took several minutes before they realized he wasn't dancing any more and moved out of the way.

Is there much new actual 'content' in the later add ons?

ie worth playing through again just to see new stuff?

This steam version is useless to a person running windows 7 isn't it?

Not really, you can use the compatibility mode as well as with any other version - you just can't start the game via steam, but rather look for the startfile in your steamapps folder.
