Assisting with checks

Homebrew and House Rules

We all know that right now when you have two people combing their efforts to do something, you choose one as the primary and any others as assisting.

Often times though the assisters roll far and beyond beats the primary and you still wind up failing even after the +2 is added.

My idea is instead this, you have everyone roll and take the highest number, you add +2 for everyone who makes it over 10 to succeed, and you subtract -2 for everyone involved who fails.

This would represent the combined efforts of everyone sharing in the task who succeeded but take into account anyone who bungled the action and got in the way more than they helped.

I see where you are going ,but no other game mechic work like that... but ia worth a try.

What feed back do you have form your players. Cause as it you made it it make me not want to try at all. There for not play and just sit there like lump on a log. Not fun.

I use raiseing DC 10 for the first person DC 12 for the the second ect. Till you run out folks puting in there 2 cents.

I like this idea. It may very well become a houserule. I enjoy finding things that keep players from feeling like total idiots for failing miserably at something they are supposed to be somewhat skilled in doing.

3d6-like? Nah. We still like d20s - nothing beats seeing a nat 20 - but where skills are concerned, it's just not an area many players I have seen put their focus. My players really like fighting monsters, but interacting the world gets really hard when they fail stuff like sense motive checks and they know an NPC is lying because I can't keep a straight face.

Craft, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, anything that people can help perform, I'm all for it.
