OUCH.
Despite my strong feelings about 4E and the fact that I'm not really a customer of thier products anymore it still sucks that d00dz are getting laid off like this.
EDIT: Just to clarify. I wasnt trying to say that Slavicsek got laid off, but alluding to the fact that WOTC does this every year and there are more to come according to both @mforbeck and @monteJcook on twitter....

Now that's unexpected. Usually, they perform their mass s!+!cannings near the holidays.

If I were the betting type, I'd have money on either this GenCon or the next for their big announcement.

I'm with you on this one. I wanna hear names!

See, that's a good reason for speculation. I want that dirty gossip though! Somebody throw some stank on this, quick!

Hmmm....as much as i hate Bill's work and his destruction of whatever he gets his hands on, i am sad that a man lost a job. Hope that Paizo doesn't take him in though.
Bill Slavicsek did some fantastic work for the old d6 Star Wars RPG from West End Games back in the day. He also worked on the Dark Sun campaign setting for TSR and did some good work for WoTC in the early days of 3E - including large chunks of the d20 Modern product line. Although I don't like the direction that D&D has taken with 4E, I respect a lot of Bill's past work and wish him all the best for the future.

I've been hearing those rumors since PHB2 was released. They are mostly just talk.
I also don't believe rumors need to be in quotes. Rumors are already defined as "an unverified account". Quotes are usually to lend doubt to so-called "facts".
So far the layoffs are just rumors from twitter. While sometimes news gets bantered around on twitter, unless someone points to a real post somewhere its just noise.

Bingo. I was wondering where it was said that Mr. Slavicek was laid off. So far as I can tell, he quit.

Dang dude, pull out the guns already? Chill pill. You got your source out, don't go using fighting words for those of us who are still trying to figure out what is going on with this whole thing.

I don't. Now that I've seen it from multiple trusted sources (not one tweet from one guy who said rumor, not confirmed) it moves beyond mere rumors.
The implication that this means a new edition is still just wild internet speculation though.

There will also be a simultaneous launch of customizable virtual miniatures and a 3DTV virtual tabletop. All fully functional and available on launch day as part of a new subscription service, which will include all new artwork and frequent updates and add-ons for an additional fee. They promise.

Only for simple folk who can't be bothered with the higher education required to grasp it. If you would only take the time to learn it you would see it's no more complicated than a slide rule.

I don't understand why Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro would lay off someone with credits on the 2nd edition AD&D products Harbinger House and The Nightmare Lands boxed set - not unless they're planning to mothball D&D altogether.
Are there any recognisable names other than Mearls left there (and how long now before they tell him to clear his desk)?
Edit:
Oh, I forgot Rich Baker is still on the payroll too, but still...
