Here's the main reason: Magic.
Magic is a completely pervasive part of the game, and 4e changes it fundamentally.
The presentation changed, but really, Kthulhu is right (imo). We can use 4e monster in 3.xe just as much as we can use 3.xe monsters in ad&d. While the format for everything is different, it really isn't that different.
