Which adventure path for me?

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Silver Crusade

I am currently getting a game going with some friends. I will be D'Ming.
I plan to run the modules, crypt of the ever flame, mask of the living god, and city of golden death first to learn things.

What adventure would be good to run after those three modules? I want it to be one of the ones made for PFRPG, not the ogl, so that means council of thieves, king maker, serpents skull, or carrion crown.

Preferences are for dungeon crawls and lost of combat.

Council of Thieves has dungeons but some situations which call for heavy roleplay (particularly the play in the second part of the path) if a group's going to get the most out of it. Kingmaker has a couple of decent sized dungeons in the middle of the path, but otherwise puts a lot on exploration of new terrain and dealing with events which hit the kingdom.
I'm currently unfamiliar with Serpent's Skull and Carrion Crown, and cannot advise on these.

Silver Crusade

Serpent's Skull has a dungeon in almost every volume, but they tend to be small. Both Kingmaker and Serpent's Skull are very open to players, focusing on exploration, so it's a bit different from usual campaigns I've seen for sale. Carrion Crown and Council of Thieves are a bit more roleplay-oriented, though the very first Carrion Crown revolves around a large dungeon crawl.

Dark Archive

the cost is very expensive but I recomend getting a series you can get the whole set of. every dm should have at least 1 full ap, t s worth the very expensive cost to own 1 full ap. more than that has to be judged by weather or not you have that much dsposable ncome. easer by pdf but do u really want to run the whole thng on a computer and printouts?

also bear n mnd that an ap wll begn at level one(not a problem startng at lv2 if concearned about how fragle 1stlv pcs are). so don`t thnk u should use the mod pcs n the ap.

Well since none of those sound very appealing, how hard is it to convert one of the OGL adventure paths into PFRPG?

If it is not to difficult i think I may do that.

If you are looking for something really combat heavy, you may want to have a look at the Slumbering Tsar adventure path, published by Frog God Games and available through the Paizo Store. I think it was a 3.x adventure originally but is converted for Pathfinder now.

Very wel written IMHO, but also pretty deadly for the players, takes them from level 6 to level 20 if run in its totality.

Kingmaker using the "Kingdom in the background" sidebars.

They have quite a few dungeon crawls throughout, and with all the "Hexploration" available you can drop any dungeon or lair from any module anywhere with very little work.
Running the kingdom in the background would be easy, there are many NPCs to fit the bill for the background ruling. The PCs could merely be working for the new kingdom clearing dungeons/lairs/menaces as the barony grows, etc. There is also a BBEG to deal with at the end of it all with a super-dungeon.
The best part of running this is that it's sandboxy enough to do whatever you want, whenever you want. If your group wants to RP some more as a change of pace later on in levels, there's opportunity for that everywhere. You can go combat heavy/dungeon crawly again at any point.

I also recommend Neil Spicer's Realm of the Fellknight Queen module as a companion module to this already huge AP. It just fits perfectly. The encounters in the module could be transplanted anywhere in the AP, and the BBEG could make for a good flunky to the AP's BBEG.

If you do look to convert from OGL, I'd vote Rise of the Runelords, though Castle Whiterock from Goodman Games would be a better fit for your old fashioned mega-dungeon with dragon's lair. Castle Whiterock is available on PDF still.

Castle Whiterock is indeed a great OGL dungeoncrawl. I think that one starts at level 1 and goes up to level 15 or so.

Another very nice option is Rappan Athuk Reloaded by Necromancer games, another uber-dungeon crawl still available in pdf, takes you from level 4-18-ish.

It's not very difficult; the easiest way is probably to leave all monsters they way they are (i.e. the 3.5 version) and just change the NPCs.

Have you taken a look at the Shackled City hardcover? It's not my absolute favourite adventure path, but it's very hard to beat in terms of bang for your buck (a 1-20 adventure path in a lovely hardcover book for $30).

Yeah Shackled City is very combat-heavy and dungeon crawly. In comparison to later APs written by Paizo, it isn't as "rich" in terms of backstory and linking the different parts together. But if you customize it to your players' characters, figure out their motivations, intersperse their personal story arcs through the metaplot, it should be very rewarding. And you can always read the later APs for inspiration as to how you can see a better-crafted metastory can be done.

Also, its lack of metastory focus early on might be a plus if you're plugging in Level 7 characters, which is where your characters might be at when finishing the 3 modules you mentioned.

The APs that Paizo did for Dungeon magazine are also different in that they take characters to Level 20+, while the Pathfinder APs normally take characters to Level 12-16... that may or may not be important to your players, but FYI.

By the way, be sure to check out the podcasts that were done for the 3 modules you're running. In particular, there are some DMing challenges presented by the 2nd module, which has some character-motivation issues.

For DMing my group through these, the podcasts helped tremendously.
