Play-by-Post Discussion

Alright, we got ourselves an OOC Thread. The 5 promising young adventurers who will be living through this voyage are:

OmniChaos - Feraya Gilrad (Conjurer)
Craig Mercer - Ember V (Sorcerer)
Patcher - Art Halfstone (Rogue)
Dax Thura - Hagin (Oracle)
Will Cooper - Gael Enhad (Paladin)

Couple of things:

1) Craig/Ember - What bloodline are you? I can't find it on the sheet, please put it and any powers related to it on your sheet so I can find it. I assume its Elemental Fire but I want it in writing.

2) You guys have till Wednesday the 27th to discuss your previous In Character associations with each other and relationships. Do that here. Just about anything goes (I will chime in if something doesn't work).

3) Try to post at least once a day. I will be using Google Maps for combat situations. I will be rolling your Initiative checks myself to speed things up, along with surprise checks.

4) Lets have some fun! If this goes well and you guys enjoy it I may extend it to the "follow up" adventure that comes after this.

Talk amongst yourselves :)

Weeee, am admittedly squealing with glee right now because I'm in. :O

So, how do we know one another? Any suggestions? (am about to hit the hay, being in Europe is very inconvenient if most of you are US-based)

I am EST but I can post from work pretty much all day.

You guys basically grew up in the same town, which only has about 750 people in it. Its pretty small as towns go, and most of the Mentors are big names so their "apprentices" would be fairly well known.

Also: Glad I could pop your PBP cherry as it where :P Thanks for giving me the chance to DM for ya...considering this is going to be MY first DMing via PBP >.>

Be gentle D: I R STILL VIRGUN

I assumed we would all be aware of one another, I was thinking more of "how well do we know each other" and the like. I'm open to pretty much anything (preferably not enmity, though).

Hahaha. Dont worry I won't use my drill to pierce your heavens ;)

ANYWAY.

You guys decide how well you know each other :)

Male Elf Conjurer 2

Well my guy liked to use his magic for the other kids so maybe someone knows him thru that. He has also been the town wizards apprentice for many years as wizardry takes alot of study so he should have at least been seen with anyone who deals with the old mage (mostly playing servent boy lol).

Hagin could have been called on to see after any of the others when they became sick or injured.

I figure Hagin and Gael are familiar from the church services. At least I presume she attended services regularly. Who's her patron deity?

I also could have become acquainted with Art Halfstone during a visit with Father Prasst, who maintained in interest in the dwarf's development.

Both sound plausible for acquaintance...hood? With Art, at least. Arthur. Dat dwarfling.

Yeah sounds like Hagin and Gael would know each other from church services. When they were younger I'm sure that she played in the streets with Art and Feraya - though recently everyone has been busy learning with their mentors and growing up and stuff.

In particular every time you've seen Gael recently she's been a tired and has lost her old cheerfulness. Lot's of training with the knight, probably. Hagin's patched her up a couple of times with bruises and small cuts - she's been grateful but distant. Then she asked him if he had thought about being a battlefield medic...

Since Art's a blacksmith, maybe he's the go-to guy for weapon maintenance?

Male Elf Conjurer 2

Well Feraya could have been involved with some martial training both as a student and as advisor if his mentor was needed to teach about how to deal with spellcasters in battle. Any magical weapons also could have had Holgast enchant them so he could have visited the blacksmith too.

Starting to figure out why the old man sleeps so much. >.<

Mentors:

Paladins, Cavaliers - Sir Dramott (human)

Bards - Jocyn Elmaran (half-elf)

Wizards, Alchemists, Summoners - Holgast (human)

Rogues - Jimes "Short Change" Iggins (halfing

Barbarians - Braggar Ironhame (dwarf)

Rangers - Arnama Lastrid (human)

Monks - Ilimara Oniri (human)

Clerics, Inquistors, Oracles - Father Rantal Prasst (human)

Druids - Olmira Treesong (human)

Sorcerers, Witches - Moltus Vargidan (human?)

Fighters - Guard Captain Gregor Wisslo (human)
========================================================================
Thought that list could prove useful while we do this.

Hagin could be one of Ember's few friends. He could have been drawn to her seeming sickness, in time finding her to be not so frail after all, and eventually becoming her friend. Plus somebody had to patch up the ones that made the mistake of making her too mad.

Oh, you might want to take note that during a fight I can only understand and speak Celestial.

I just had an idea.
*** We could have all recently been on some small misadventure. Perhaps some of the younger kids went to stay overnight in the woods, but there's a storm coming. We found them, but managed to get caught in the storm ourselves. Depending on one another, we manage through the night. On the way home in the morning we find the bridge is washed out. While looking for a place to ford the river (or perhaps we're going to the next bridge), we find a wounded Arnama the Ranger. After helping her out, we make our way back to town, where Arnama is praised for rescuing us and we are admonished for putting ourselves and the kids in danger. ***
This would give us all a tie in, plus allow everyone to have some idea as to each others' abilities.

I have half a mind of putting a skill rank in linguistics to learn Celestial at level 2. But not to "spontaneously learn the language", more "slowly learning it with mistranslations happening more often than not."

I like the idea of a previous misadventure, though it does have a few gaps: why would the five of us (or four, or three, if others do object) go together specifically? I mean, we could blame happenstance (Oh, your apprentice went with my little brother out to that shack by the... ocean? (speaking of, geography-wise, where are we? Close to the sea? Are there mountains around? Is the town located on plains?) We must save them!) and I understand that sacrifices sometimes happen at the cost of "logic", but I would prefer that we find out why. (apologies if I sound like an arse.)

Also, I couldn't find Hagin's or Gael's ages on their character sheets. I also asked in the other topic about ages; I don't know how old Art is. In the setting, are dwarves similar to elves in that they are biologically adults about the same age as humans, but not considered adults due to culture (40 years for dwarves), or are they biologically slow and only fully-grown adults at 40+?

Whee! I'm in!
(Obligatory celebration!)
(Adds Bloodline to character sheet)

Now, to the task at hand.

Since Ember was picked on as a child, she only has a few friends. Although, to tell the truth, now that she's 16, her attractiveness has picked up some people who would have normally shunned her as a child.

Looking at the character, I would guess Hagin would have been met as he practiced his healing trade.

She would have watched Feraya from a distance, as her interest in his elvishness and magic would not be enough to get her in a crowd of children. Would Feraya have noticed the quiet, pale child of the sorcerer's family (adopted) watching him from a distance?

Gael would definately be known from childhood play. But would she be have been one of the few defenders of Ember, or leading the attack against the 'wicked witch'?

Not having any weapons, the connection with Art would have been either as a child, or her picking up household metalworked items (pots and pans) repaired at the blacksmiths.

Well, since Art was raised by halflings and as such has a few halfling traits (such as curiosity), I don't think it's too far-fetched that he was curious of the "strange child". Also, he was probably bullied or made fun of as well, which would have been enough of a reason to befriend her.

There's a bit of an age gap there, though (at least 6 years, Art's 22 unless he's got to be over 40) so maybe it was a sort of "protecting her in a older-brother-esque fashion from the bullies" or similar - he's too kind to have been a bully, at the very least.

I am pretty easy about ages. Make em what you want. Dwarves and Elves do live longer then humans but for all I am concerned they could still hit adulthood at the same time if you guys want.

And if you guys want to have a misadventure and bond there prior to the adventure thats fine :) Figure it out and come to a consensus before Wednesday morning folks :D

You are really excitable you know that? Hope you keep that entusiasm during the adventure :P

Also quick note: Just in case you did not know Knowledge checks CANNOT be done untrained. Just a warning.

Haha, I try. Am more worried that I'll be over-enthusiastic and annoy you all. >:

Am aware of the rules on knowledge checks. Art's not knowledgeable in anything except local matters anyway. Oh, and the art of blacksmithing. *nod*

The knowledge thing was for everyone not just you ;)

Eh, be enthusiastic. Its better then being boring.

I can see Art as the "big brother" sort. Especially since I can also see her 'real' big brothers not concerning themselves with an adopted sister that much (I'm sure some of the Vargidan family like her, but part of them would resent the adopted daughter, and her developing sorcerous powers would hurt their feelings of superiority over her even more.) And of course the "fend for yourself" attitude would mean most of the Vargidans would let Ember solve her own problems.

Do note: Art has natural spell resistance. Can be used as a plot point, I suppose, or part of background.

Idea: Maybe that's why he's not frightened by Ember? At least if part of her... hm. Mysterious and off-putting nature is of magical origin, and what made others reluctant to try to befriend her.

That idea was just something to give all of us a chance to become more familiar with each other. I tried to keep the misadventure a bit vague to allow for everyone a chance to add to the story and allow their character to shine. Like Ember could have started a fire even though the wood was wet, Art worked out a makeshift lean-to to keep the weather out, Gael and Feraya drove off an angry bear, and I administered to people's injuries. We would have the rest of the night to talk ("So, Hagin, what is up with that weird language during the fight?).

As to why us? The friends of the wayward children didn't want to go to the grown ups and get their friends in trouble, so they came to us. Whether we were together or separate doesn't matter as we all made it to the bridge from the story at the same time. We've been inseparable ever since.

Oh yeah, I'll be 17 years old

Once you guys are settled, if you decide on something BEFORE Wednesday, let me know and we will start early. I am actually ready already lol.

What can I say, I am prepared >.>

Noticing that Gael hasn't posted yet.

In regards of the mentors, Art knows Jimes and Braggar well. He's also had a few drinks with Jocyn and listened to stories and songs and jokes. Father Prasst visited often during his childhood, so Art would know him to some extent. As a blacksmith Art has had run-ins with the Guard Captain and Sir Dramott when it came to weapons and armour. The others are just names, nobody he truly knows or is acquainted to.

Quick warning: A Coworker of mine wants to try PBP gaming, and I forgot that I promised him a spot, so we will end up with 6, count em 6 people. This is also gonna push back the start time a bit (gotta adjust the encounters a bit) but dont worry too much.

The more the merrier, I say! Any information on his character?

Art Halfstone wrote:

Elven Rogue, Swashbuckler Archetype, slightly inspired by Jack Sparrow. He has never played Pathfinder either so I am helping him learn. Considering he sits next to me at work it aint hard :P

Dont think so, and he is going Combat oriented not really skill oriented. He doesnt have disable device for example.

He wont be steppin on your toes dude, and hell you two can flank together for hilarious results.

I'm not worried that I'll be "outclassed" or "less worth" or anything, I'm jesting about.

Pity about the guyliner, though.

Noticing that Gael hasn't posted yet.

I did too - just up there a bit ^ :) But only the once - suspect I'm in a different timezone to you people. No worries, will still get here once a day.

Hm - in recent times Gael wouldn't have spent much time off camping or fishing to get into a scrape with you all. The ceremony might be the first time you've really been together for months.

Ember - Gael was definitely a protector when you were very young. Less so for the last two or three years though and you've really drifted apart.

Happy to get going whenever; Gael will be training with Sir Drammott until the very last moment anyway.

Gael: Well, if we go by Hagin's idea, maybe you were sought out to help the damsel...guys in distress because most of us knew you were training under Sir Drammott and probably had the best sword-arm in between us? Not so much camping as "quick, we need help, monsters" or "noes, a bear! Fend it off while we run to safety!" or something similar. Also a prior reunion before the big adventure.

Ok new guy will be going into a different group cause "jlighter" is going to run 2 groups based on the people who didnt get into this game.

So my coworker will be joinin em.

Male Elf Conjurer 2

Had work so putting in my two cents now.

@Ember
Feraya is living as one of the only elves in a village of mostly humans and certainly the only elf child I would think. So he would not really care about looks and such as just about everyone would be considered strange if he thought in those terms. To top it off he is a wizard's apprentice, they know better then to trust their eyes (the old man is not above disguising himself to get out of teaching lessons). Ember would be more interesting to him then most because of her own arcane magic, if anything he would be curious not put off. As for her watching him dont know if he would notice his perception is weak, depends on your stealth. ^.^

As for the misadventure Feraya is game. Keep in mind I gave him alot of local monster languages for a reason. For talking things out or exposing their plans and eavesdropping. :)

When you all feel ready to go let me know and we will get this parth started.

I'm ready to go whenever, really. I figure we can still discuss things in-depth mid-game in this topic if something needs clarification. Reckon it'd be smart to get going.

Good to go now.

Art: Yes that would work pretty well. Gael would certainly come to help; and then spend the whole journey back lecturing everyone on the importance of being prepared, and proper martial training, and what-if-they-were-orcs-not-bears, and so on. And on. And on. :)

But she did help!

Male Elf Conjurer 2

Ready to go ^.^

Well we just need Hagin and Ember to chime in then we are good to go :)

M somewhat akin to a kender Y / MA

Good gaming guys!

Good luck stomp!

I did not apply!

I promised myself no new PbP's!

;)

Sweet. And I didn't say it yet, so thanks for picking me. I'm looking forward to this game. I'm also glad that the others will have someone to GM for them.

Final check that you're OK with Gael? I took max HP at first level, right? And you're happy with the rich parents leading to a masterwork weapon and better armour than normally possible at first level?

Am getting excited :O

Yea I am fine. If you show to be a bit tougher then I expect I will just make things a tad harder is all....BWHAHAHAHAH

We will use the FAST XP track by the way, since there are 5 of you.

Glad to see people are getting excited, hopefully I don't screw up >.>

Sweet. Remember this is a group project, and it's on all of us to make it work. Yes you have a key role as GM, but it's not just about you screwing up. It's also about how we gel as players, as characters, and it's about how we take the opportunities that you create for good story-telling. And good hack'n'slashing :)

Well said, Gael! As long as I get an opportunity to perform vicious sneak attacks with a BATTLEAXE TO THE FACE-

I mean.

Axe. To... the... yeah.

And tell anecdotes. I have like a million ideas running through my head of past experiences for Arty.

This adventure has plenty of the hackin and the slashing. Hopefully I can do this well. Took me a couple of hours to make the maps >.>

Replying as ordered.
OK, so it is a bit late... but I'm ready to go!

Gael: If you have defended her from the bullies, she is your friend! Even if we haven't seen each other for a long time, Ember still thinks of Gael as a dear friend.

Feraya: What stealth? I get a +2 unskilled, but Ember is not going to be close to any crowd of children, since she's been bullied by them.
She would be interested in Feraya, and wonder why he gets accepted when she isn't (not understanding how the psychology of children works). If you want to seek her, she won't run from you (unless you bring that band of children with you, and Gael isn't around to protect her).

Now we await for Hagin.

Let's do this.
