Hi people,
so this is our ooc thread for discussing the game and fine tuning the characters until we're ready to begin the game. I'm sure I'll think of a lot more to add to this as we go on but for now that's all I can think to add.

So far we're looking at...
Jonas El'Adan the Wizard

Simon Bornen the Paladin

Sigurd Mjornson the Inquisitor (Might want to check but I actually think
Sigurd is a feminine Norse name, I seem to remember it being on of the Valyrie names)

Pavel the Ranger

Elanor Krupp the Witch

Good luck guys :)

Edit: Thought I'd add the images from the recruitment thread since they're rather nice and they make an easy short hand for some of the exposition I'll be writing later :)

Stolen Lands Wilderness

On the trail to Oleg's

Stolen Lands Foothills

Deep in the forests

Early Autumn

Male Human (Ulfen) Inquisitor 1

Rawr. Here is me, marking the page. I double-checked, and it seems that Sigurd is an appropriate name for a male. Maybe "Sig" would be a feminine version?

Dark Archive

Ah, its was Sigrún rather then Sigurd, my memory being faulty :)

Male Human Paladin of Erastil 1

Thanks for picking me !
I'll check tonight if I have to correct the point build of Simon but the changes should be minor .

Male(s) 27 Ducks in a James suit Duck 27/ Expert 5

Thanks for the invite! I'll restat Pavel soon to fit character creation guidelines.

Male Human Magus 1

I total agree with you about the the photos Jormungandr keeping everyone on the same page about what is going on is the DM's hardest job and anything to help with that is always welcome. Also thank you for the invite I am looking forward to the adventure.

If you have the opportunity to look over my character could you tell me if there anything that you believe needs to be adjusted or any clarifications on things that need to be made. Baring a few items of possible equipment I believe he is pretty much set.

On a side note I was planning on setting my character on the path towards the arcane trickster prestige class. I figured his background would segue nicely to a level in rogue at 2nd.

This is Elanora... I'm a cleric now

Hi people

Dark Archive

Nice to see everyone touch base so quickly, I'll have a look over the characters in a few minutes and see if I can spot any discrepancies :)

Male Human Magus 1

Welcome Elanora

Dark Archive

So, Elanora, Jonas and Sigurd look good, Simon has a few too many abilities still :)

There is probably stuff I've forgotten but I'll no doubt notice it over time.

Male Human Magus 1

never played online through the pathfinder website before but I have plenty of real life experience. Was wondering if the dice expression is all that is necessary or are their other items or programs that may be helpful or necessary. I have many of the pathfinder books and modules, but was looking more for anything that may be useful for the online game.

Rolling against my ignorance :)
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Dark Archive

The ooc function and the spoiler funtion are also fairly useful :)

Dark Archive

The all powerful bashed the world serpent Jormungandr in the side of his face with... etc

Wow, dude this action is lame

ooc Action :
I move adjacent and strike Jormungandr with Mjolnir

Dark Archive

Basically so you can do a much more advanced version of the above post :)

Male Human Magus 1

Thanks for the info do you have any specific standards that you like to keep with when DMing for example when casting spells should I place my current spells left after casting in a OOC coment as an example. Not having the experience there may be something that is typically done that I may miss.
For example
With the battle imminent Jonas takes the crossbow from his shoulder beginning to chant words of power while waving his hand over his crossbow before touching it leaving a slight mystical aura about the weapon
I perform a move action to draw my light crossbow and cast Gravity Bow on the crossbow increasing the damage to 2d6 for 1 min leaving the following prepared spells
0th: Detect Magic, Dancing Lights, Daze
1st: Enlarge Person

would that be the kind of posts that you would be looking for

Dark Archive

That would work fine, generally people have their own styles so go with what feels easy for you, only time I'd ever complain is if my sense of aesthetics were completely appalled and that'd take something special :)

Male Human Magus 1

Thanks looking forward to starting the adventure

Dark Archive

i am DaviD the mighty" he says

i am angry and I will smash YOU! I folowed what I said With

Then my sword cut him *Swish*

I make an attck

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 221d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

damages:
i made a hit for of 5

Dark Archive

The above would be an example of what would make me track down and slap a player :D

Male Human Magus 1

lol I will try to keep that in mind

Just wanted to say that this is my first time doing a play-by-post RP, especially for Pathfinder. Hope I don’t suck too badly at it lol.

Male Human Magus 1

well I guess you can join the club then. I certainly won't judge :)

Dark Archive

I will ;P

Male Human Paladin of Erastil 1

Simon should be up to date now

Male Human (Ulfen) Inquisitor 1

Sigurd is all finished.

Male Human Magus 1

I can't imagine any other adjustments I might need to make. So I am ready

AC 21 (20)/T 13/FF 17; CMD 24, HP 76/76

Pavel's almost ready, just need equipment and the bio. Took the skill point for favored class, btw, which is why he has 8 skills.

Basically, his father was a surveyor on a previous expedition
to the Stolen Lands and brought Pavel along. Bandits attacked, held him and his father for ransom. His mother couldn't pay and the funds from Restov didn't arrive in time so they murdered his father before his eyes. That night, though, one of the fey put the bandit on watch to sleep so Pavel could escape. She left him a trail of food to follow back to a settlement. He grew up hating bandits and now makes his way hunting them for money or solely for justice if there isn't a bounty open.

Dark Archive

Its been a busy day but I'll try and get this rolling in the next couple of hours :)

Male Human Magus 1

Nice back story Pavel. I seem to be the city slicker of the group, Not to surprising considering my class as a wizard. Hopefully some time with the more rough and tumble characters in the group will toughen Jonas up :)

AC 21 (20)/T 13/FF 17; CMD 24, HP 76/76

Th'thanks, Jonas.

R'ready when you are, J'j'jormungandr

Dark Archive

Hey guys, IC Thread is now up :)

Left it just before the arrival at Oleg's Trading Post so people can introduce themselves and then move into the story proper.

Dark Archive

Hey Simon, you still playing?

Hello people, Im new to this too, i know Jormungandr irl and he told me to give this a try =)

Dark Archive

Hey Celeste,
sorry for dumping so many people into the game, shes the last one I promise :)

Male Human Magus 1

Doesn't bother me. This campaign is pretty big and one more person is no problem. I did have a question game mechanics wise Jörmungandr I was thinking of using Daze as a Delay or hold action to help protect my allies casting daze on any opponent that was preparing to attack one of them. How do you see that working in the game.

Dark Archive

@Jonas: I think it'd work normally, just state your intent and the trigger then hold off on the action until the rounds over or the trigger event happens :)

I'll move the scene forwards in a little while, hopefully that won't step on anyone's toes :)

Would you prefer a new grid map for the battle? Also, on your first round of combat roll an initiative for yourself but post in any order, I'll sort it out when it comes time to do the rounds capping post. Generally I like to try and keep to a one round of combat a day with weekends getting some leeway since people log in less regular on weekends.

Male Human Magus 1

Thanks for letting me know Jörmungandr. A new grid map may be useful especially to direct actions during the combat. was there anything you where thinking about changing on the page like adding grid numbers or simply moving the link up to the new set of pages?

Male Human Paladin of Erastil 1

Sorry , I was out of town .
Still up for the game of course .

Dark Archive

I'll be making a new bigger map, won't be as graphically pleasing as the one from the book though :P

Not a problem Simon, just wanted to make sure everyone was here before I through the first combat at you guys. The new map and stuff will either go up tonight or tomorrow morning my time (GMT+8) since its getting a bit late and the maps do take a bit of time with photoshop. Once we get the first turn or two done though we should find a fairly decent flow.

Male Human Paladin of Erastil 1

I thought the plan was to let the brigands come towards me ?

Also I've got a question for Jörmngandr :
How do you run combats ? Free style or Tactical ?
The extreme of both ?
Free Style . I run at the horses somesaulting through the air (in a full plate with no jump or tumbling. In passing , i strike the bandit leader dealing him a wound on the back . I then jump on a horse and makes him fight a bandit , his hooves striking a bandit full in the face and making him fall

Tactical . After having waited for all others before me in initiative , I move passing thru cases a1 b1 b2 b3 (No AoO normally )
If an aoo is possible then I do instead: blah blah blah ... I can draw my longsword since I have + 1 to Bab . Once In B3 , I strike the bandit in C4. If he fallls , I then say

Dark Archive

I favor the tactical approach but give concessions to the medium since without PbP we can't sit around arguing about exactly whats happening and when.

?? Did i do something wrong ??
I wrote a basic post and went back and eddited it to fit with my rolls more.

Dark Archive

Heh, don't worry Celeste, technically you made a mistake in the surprise round but I'm the one who forgot that in a surprise round you do either a move or standard action. To make it easier, and since the bandits are going to be cut apart anyway I'll drop the surprise round.

For a bit of side information both Celeste and Elanora are new players unfamiliar with both PbP and RPGs in general so pretty much any mistake on their sheets or in their actions are actually mine, I'm not infallible and I make plenty of mistakes. I try to double check pretty much any rules call I make but sometimes I'm lazy or I read "Detect Evil" the spell rather then "Detect Evil" the paladin (Did that one recently) ability and make mistakes.

If you're unhappy with the type of game I run though you can always air your grievance and if we're unable to come to an amicable solution there is always the option to leave the game. I don't mean this in an antagonistic way, with the written medium this can be hard to judge, but I do want us to be on the same page for this.

Also, just to clear up any misunderstandings, I'll do my best to give a download on how I typically handle combat.

1. I'll make a starting post wherein I try and describe the scene, whats happening and post a map, sometimes with beginning locations already marked.

2. I let the players post as they notice the initiating post and ask that they roll initiative during this post. I'll then either ask that players either choose their starting position or script out their first turn. Also, as Celeste did at my suggestion, since once you've made a post with dice rolls the rolls can't be changed you can edit these posts to reflect your actions.

3. After everyone has made their posts I note down the initiative order on a piece of paper and plot out the turn according to initiative and then roll out the turn for the enemies and compile this into a single post I think of as the "Round Capping Post". After this I change the map and re-link it so people can see where they are at the start of the new round then I rinse and repeat until the end of the combat.

Some of the issues with this are initiative order since sometimes the actions of a later poster with higher initiative kills outright the target of an earlier posters attack, in this cases I do the ole' invoke rule zero and try and shift the attack to the next most legitimate target.

Hope that helps codify my version of the workings of combat via PbP

AC 21 (20)/T 13/FF 17; CMD 24, HP 76/76

Sorry if I jumped in there too fast for the plan- I thought Sigurd's intimidate was a good signal to go from. And yeah, I had also forgotten you only get to move on the surprise round.

Dark Archive

Don't stress about not jumping the gun, if you guys hadn't struck that turn you'd have been spotted anyway at the start of the next theoretical turn, some of you guys plain sucked at being hidden :P

Male Human Paladin of Erastil 1

No problem there . It is indeed logical for 1st level characters to learn as they go :)
None of you did make any mistake . I was just a bit surprised that we could all act since the bandit leader is smack in the middle of us initiativewise and preferred to air the potential problem now than later .
Now JOrmungrand ' way works for me . I'm just more used to the following format
All people who can act before the first group of NPCs act . The order of the posts is the order of the action
Then the first group of NPC act . The DM tells us who can now act
And so on ...

This normally work well in the PbP I've seen so far and avoids the pitfall of one player posting his action and then being badly hurt before which would have changed his actions

By the way , DM , feel free to roll initiative and all passive rolls for me since this normally expedite matters.

Dark Archive

Yeah, I tried post order but found that it did away a with a few more effects then I was happy with that rely on initiative. I do generally however roll passive checks, though feel free to keep your initiative dice :)

Basically the way this would work as an example is this...
Steve, John and a Bandit are facing off.

John posts that he shoots the Bandit with his bow and hits doing half the Bandits damage

Steve says he charges the bandit and does two thirds of the Bandits damage

However the initiative is Steve (19), Bandits (7) and John (3)

Now when it comes time for me to finish the round I do the rolls for the bandit attacking Steve and do 3 damage to Steve.

I now write up how Steve charges the bandit and hacks at him with the sword doing some damage. Then I narrate the damage being done to Steve before finally ending the narrative by having an arrow hit the Bandit and Mr Bandito dying.

Technically there's the whole issue of shooting into melee here and I make the rolls for it, for the sake of simplicity, however, I handwave that even though John might not have shot the bandit when Steve was attacking him he does in this case. Its one of the things PbP doesn't handle well so its just something we have to put up with within the medium.

Sometimes this might result in a different target being selected etc but it does actually make PbP a little quicker which I think works out in our favor.

Male Human Magus 1

It seems like a pretty flexible way to handle things. No worries about the surprise round Jörmungandr I only knew about it because I happened to look it up the other day. And yes I do seem to suck at hiding :) hopefully a few levels of rogue will take care of that. Coarse I seem unable to hit the broad side of a barn either lol. All part of the low level blues I guess.

Male Human (Ulfen) Inquisitor 1

Yeah, I wanted to apologize fire acting a bit early. Maybe I didn't read that post quite closely enough - I missed the part about two bandits still being outside.
