Help me pick a (prestige) class(es) for my character!

Advice

Okay, my character's name i Luther. He is a 42 year old male human. His mother died when he was 10, his father at 12 and generally, his life has pretty much sucked ever since. But, since he didn't really know of a better life, he never complained much. He spent his early years as the local undertaker's help and when the undertaker died, Luther took over the job for the following ten years. Then the burial grounds was closed as the town opened up a new one in another location where there already were an undertaker so Luther loses his job an is pretty quickly put on the street as no one wants to employ because of his age and his lack of experience.

One day Luther realizes how bad his life is and decides to do something about it. He goes on to become an icon of hope to the people living in the streets.

Okay, so what I need to know is, what class/prestige class does Luther have? It's currently going to be a level 10 game and I haven't really had much interest in game statistics lately, so I figured someone might have some ideas concerning his "profession".

It is very important to me that this character functions without magic as I have also said no to start playing with magic items.

Thanks in advance.

If you're going to give up magic items, but everyone else in the party is going to use them, then you're not going to be effective. Monsters at CR 10 have a 22-24 AC usually. A 10th level fighter, with weapon focus & greater focus, and two steps of weapon training has a +14 to hit before adding strength. If he starts with a 16 strength and adds +2 racial and +2 from leveling and +4 from a stat item, then adds a +3 weapon, he's up to +24 to hit, which means he'll automatically hit AC 24 with his first attack (barring a 1), and have a 70% chance to hit with his second (including rolling a 1). Meanwhile, the same character without magic will only have a +19 bonus, and only has a 75% chance to hit with his first attack, and 50% chance with the second. This difference only gets worse as level goes up.

If you're a 3/4 BAB class, it's even worse. A 10th level rogue (same stats, but no weapon training or greater focus) would have a +18 with magic, or +13 without it. That's 70%/45% chance to hit with magic, and 50%/25% chance without it.

If the entire party is doing without magic, then the GM should adjust monsters to account for that and it isn't a problem. And if you're OK missing significantly more of your attacks than everyone else, then it isn't a problem either. But make sure you know what you're getting yourself in for before you give up magical items. The system is balanced around having them.

That being said, your character sounds like a charismatic rogue (see the Rake archetype), bard, or possibly even paladin depending on how you see being a "icon of hope". Both the bard and paladin have magic, though, so they may not be the best choices.

I agree a rogue with the Rake archetype seems like a good choice, if your DM allows alternate class features. If he doesn't use your Rake's Smile (Ex) to talk him into allowing it anyway. At 10th level it should give your a +3 bonus to your diplomacy :-)

He's too old for a prestige class.

Liberty's Edge

Having worked for an undertaker as a kid/teen and taking care of people on the streets makes me think of a kindly Cleric of Pharasma, maybe protecting the street people against the attacks of undead.

Liberty's Edge

If you don;t start with any magic items, and the other characters have normal magic items for level 10, then you're going to be screwed.

If you have your heart set on the idea, then either discuss with your GM getting a big windfall (to bring you up to par) real quick (like, within a session or two), or, if even that isn't acceptable see if you can get an inherent +2 bonus to one of your stats (identical mechanically to a 55k gp tome, and will even you out with the others long-term).

As for class, well, I have no idea. You've got a good history and motivation there, but little in the way of how he does what he does. Which is what Class is. Is he notably sneaky, a skilled warrior, a brilliant scholar? What? That's what you need to think about when deciding a Class.

Okay, I see that response is heavily situated around the combat aspect of the character.

First of all, you shouldn't be concerned with the lack of magic items because we play in a club where we have access to all sorts of previous 3.5 material, and a couple of people insist on being able to use them in pathfinder since they bought all of them. So I have plenty of opportunities to make a character that can make it in combat without a hoard of magic items at his disposal. And besides, should a player ever run around with a lot of magic weapons, they are bound to get suppressed anyway. Spending a lot of time picking out magic items is a huge waste of time in my group. I'd say go for the interesting ones instead of the most powerful ones then.

Anyway. In combat, I wanted Luther to be handy with what his surroundings, so I got permission to use skill tricks. I want him to be pretty strong, but also tricky --> mainly a close-combat guy. He should have a strong personality, so I thought about spending some feats to improve his feinting and intimidation abilities. I'm pretty hooked on the Rake rogue archtype, but I still feel like I want to give him a couple of levels in a prestige class, but I don't now if any exists that will improve his abilities without granting him magical abilities.
Also, I wanted him to be the group's negotiator.

On a final note, we don't play in Golarion currently. The setting we use at the moment is one our GM made, and it's very focused on humans and set in a heavily urbanized medieval environment.
