Variant Summoning Lists

Has anyone out there tried adding outsiders from the Bestiary II or some of the supplements/adventure paths to summoning lists? If so, how do you handle this? I'm wondering because one of my players is making a CN cleric and wants to summon proteans.

I'd say no problem as long as the CRs are the same.

I allowed players to do it when I was GMing 3.5, and did it once myself as a player. It worked fine.

CR isn't always the best guideline, I wouldn't want people using SM4 to start summoning That Damn Crab. Really they ought to be approved individually.
