Oh, yeah. In 2018 we got automated phone call alerts when the air quality exceeded a certain threshold (I think 300). Alameda County has a remarkably good warning system for environmental hazards.
Gee... earthquake country with massive fires and refinery issues, who'd've thunk?
EDIT: And I see the issue. I used the wrong term. Not "order". Warning. We have an excellent automated warning system. Obeying the warnings is up to the general populace.
EDIT 2: Lisamarlene, you might remember this one. Wasn't there an incident at the refinery a couple of years ago where residents in Alameda County got shelter-in-place warnings before Contra Costa County residents?
There was some incident where people closest to the refinery were the last to get warnings about an incident there...

When we lived in Richmond near the refinery, it was almost impossible not only to get a timely warning, but just to be able to find any information on what was going on at all, even when we could see and smell it. (Even the big refinery fire, when we evacuated to your place, it took them a good long while to issue a warning... something like 10-15 minutes after we saw and smelled it.)

(Oh, and, despite the toe bleeding, we're doing real well!)
Hrm.
So my Eldest had a fever yesterday, my Youngest has a fever today, and I'm right behind that guy.
Firedove has been trying to forge through while navigating the complex web of, "Love you so daggum much, let's avoid any physical contact."
:/
(Also, toe still hurts and arm - where I got the flu shot - hurts worse. Eldest's sick had started, in retrospect, before I got the shot, so that's not the source. Sigh.)

Cap, I am so sorry you're going through that. We just kept our old dog comfortable at home at the end, and it was so hard, we still haven't gotten another dog, seven years later. Hugs.
Oof. The original post of this is neither visible on this page, nor on all those I can see when I quote or otherwise indicate a new post, but I can at least see this and get the gist.
I'm so sorry my man. That is deep pain.
I offer socially-distanced and responsible e-hugs and am praying for you and your family.

How Not To Teach 101: Impus Minor just failed a group math test.
Why?
Because the teacher gives every group the lowest score of any individual in the group in the hopes that that will force them to work together. In reality, if one group member refuses to participate (as happened in Impus Minor's group), everybody fails.
And that is educational how?!?!?

It teaches you that you can't rely on anyone, but you'll get blamed for one slacker and thrown under the bus?

I have VAGUE memories of a teacher trying this and it resulting in a revolution in the classroom.

Our school is making an effort to teach antiracism and honoring diversity this year, which is problematic because it is soooo white. (I have one student who is half Hispanic. He is blonde and paler than me.) So today we were supposed to mix individual tempera paint cups to match our skin tones and paint handprints to make a banner for our classroom. We were diverse in our different shades of whiteness. Box ticked. I feel frustrated.

More seriously, how white are we talking? Like panic if Freehold should walk down the road white or something else?

Oh, yeah. After living in Berkeley? That's got to be a shocker.
(Albany High School) has a diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural population, composed of approximately 35% White, 29% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% African-American, 16.5% Hispanic/Latino, and 14% multi-ethnic. We have 5.6% English Learners and 28% fluent-English proficient students. At least 21.7% of students qualify for the Free/Reduced Price Lunch Program. The graduation rate is 93%.

Oh, since GothBard and I were huge Phantasy Star fans when it came out, when we spotted Phantasy Star Online on Steam we *HAD* to try it.
The premise is delightfully clueless-imperialistic: "You're part of a giant space fleet that's traveling through the galaxy making planets safe for colonization. You do that by landing on the planet and ruthlessly exterminating any and all creatures that might be a threat to the colonists."
Yet somehow we're the "good guys"?

A more enlightened society might instead decide that the expansion is not worth the cost.
You would think. I am engineer and a lawyer. I also grew up in KY with the appurtenant baggage that entails for my education. I do not profess to be more than casually acquainted with various histories, but I am struggling to think of any society that has survived with such enlightened values when faced with the traditionally violent approach.
And, in this context, it borders on the goblin baby problem.

That sort of blatant colonialism does seem a bit tone deaf these days. But lets be realistic. What would happen if we discovered low intelligence violent animals on the moon or mars as we tried to build the first colonies there?
Genocide.
Hey now. If the violent creatures are cute enough that we could market plushies and exotic pets, they're heading straight into zoos.

Fair. The Federation we are not. Not even as enlightened as the colonists in David Weber's HH series. More like Ender.

Phantasy Star died at 4 for me.
That said one of my oldest friends is a big wheel in the PSO community, she was a major part of the original game and a COMPLETE STRANGER FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY I introduced her to YEARS after the original game was popular remembered her username.
