You know what amazes me?

I read threads in gaming forums - the realm of smart people, where physical strength doesn't matter - and there's discussion after discussion after argument after rant about whether females "belong" here or in comic books or as characters in video games at all. Online games are notoriously hostile to actual women, as well as the LGBT community.

Then I watch the Olympics. This is stereotypically the realm of testosterone-fueled, chest-beating dumb jocks, where there are actual, discernible differences between physical capabilities of men and women. Yet I see men and women both training and competing hard, coaching one another, cheering each other on, exulting in all the victories and mourning the losses. The folks who skied in tribute to Sarah Burke were not just women. Everyone mourned the loss of the woman who got women's events into the X-games and halfpipe skiing into the Olympics. Johnny Weir dresses however the hell he pleases and is acclaimed as an intelligent and insightful commentator, whatever his personal preferences might be.

Kinda makes ya think, don't it?

This is incredibly sad and makes me shake my head. Why can't people accept that women game?

are you saying the olympics are only for dumb male jocks?

or that most sports are only for dumb jocks while the olympics are not?

or that only the olympics are breaking down barriers in gender, outlook, sexuality and equality?

She's saying the following: (Speaking in generalizations of course)

Sports are usually portrayed as meant for jocks, especially among the "nerd"/"geek" community(/ies), and with a natural bias in favor of men, who are on average larger, taller, stronger, and/or otherwise physically superior.

Whereas those communities usually see themselves as intellectually superior, and physical traits such as size, strength, gender, and other traits don't/shouldn't matter as much because those sorts of things don't limit your mental capabilities.

Yet among the supposedly more intellectual community, where race/gender/etc. shouldn't matter, she's seen a lot more bias against females than in The Olympics, the biggest sports/athletics competition in the entire world, so basically the pinnacle of what is typically portrayed as a "jock/masculine" community.

Hope that makes more sense?

Spot on.

Rules forum!? You're braver than I thought.

Yeah. Even I refuse to step in that forum. You, sir, deserve a hat tip for bravery.

Silver Crusade

There's a thin line between bravery and stupidity, I think I fall more to the later

Every time I think I'm tired of rules arguments, I get sucked into another one. :(

Nah. I think I fall more into the stupidity line. I keep making efforts not to get into massive arguments and keep getting into massive arguments anyway.

So as not to keep all of you in suspense, this was a Dr. Deth thread(second red flag, the first was going to the rules forum) on "sno-cone wish machines" (That's #3)

After taking a long nap, I managed to calm down somewhat.

I still feel stressed out, but I'll just have to make do with what I have.

Icyshadow, I am sorry your day is so stressed. I hope the stress drops soon.

On Taig's Rat Ship:

Really liked the fact that rather than just have it be a bunch of advanced rat swarms you gave it an undead twist, and included some of the dead crew members among the dangers one can encounter - and I loved Mr. Tibbles. :D

Made one of these tonight. Took about 3 hours to print, but it's pretty nifty. Also, out of curiosity, I figured out how much the filament to print it cost. Turns out it was less than $1.

Good morning FAWTLY Folk! Happy Saturday! We had a great day yesterday! My inlaws came in town.

And so did my parents! They've surprised us by showing up! Makes me happy.

Scarab Sages

Today, we'll see my parents when they come over (probably to my brother's house) maybe do a big lunch gathering, and possibly head over to the new house to show it off.

She posted as Syssil yesterday. So she I think she's checking in now and again. Say JRR, when is the next literary masterpiece coming?

That Fimbulwinter was depressingly short. I was promised three whole years, dammit.

You can't win them all darling but I heard Jötunheimr is lovely anytime of the year. That being the land of the frost giants.
