Then we went to see Ready Player One. I have regrets. And rage. Like Freehold levels of rage. One star ( because mechagodzilla appears at one point... not a spoiler, that was in the preview), do not recommend. Will include abridged rant later. The full rant would take too long.

I am both terrified and aroused.

Freehold, how can you of all people not know that a merry widow is a type of corset/bustier/shaper thingie?

I also had never heard of Just a Mort's merry widows fishies before. Neat!

I have heard all sorts of uses for the term, lots of them related to sex, primarily sex that is not intended result in childbirth/non penatrative.

We got a couple inches of snow yesterday and this morning it's 15 degrees. I got my new car in late February and it comes with summer tires. Oh joy.

Tequilia - are you getting better sleep in the hospital and have they managed to diagnose what's causing your sleep issues?

Ugh, my doctors are clueless about my insomnia. My two 'favorite' things I've been told are: 1) "Well I'm sure the prednisone you're on isn't helping you sleep" (It is.) and 2) "Well you'll eventually fall asleep when you get exhausted enough." (I won't. I've been exhausted literally to the point of wanting to die, and still couldn't get to sleep.)

After learning a bit of meditation -- the hipsters in my life are so proud, does this make me a hipster? hmmm -- I've realized that 1) my insomnia seems to flare up when I get lung infections, and 2) specifically, it seems to be a matter of my nasal passage getting obstructed and/or my lungs simply losing capacity. There are things I've figured out I can do to help these things, but I still have no simple and consistent solution. Which sucks, because honestly this insomnia is the worst thing I've ever had to deal with -- as I said when it gets bad, I get suicidal.

hmm.

Cpap time?

Ugh.

There are always those decisions you have to make as a gamer that teeter between, "What is the most tactically-advantageous thing to do?", and, "What will not upset the other players?"

As I posted in the obit, one player's PC bled out because the other PC didn't want to risk moving away from the BBEG caster and giving her a free cast. So, while that's an understandable tactical decision, it ended up with three unhappy people:

  • The upright player, because her PC not only failed to save the downed PC, but also failed to down the BBEG
  • The player with the downed PC is probably pretty upset: Not only did his PC bleed out, but she saved MY PC in what seemed like an obvious display of favoritism. I cannot help but believe there's going to be some grar between the two of them for at least the next few sessions, which is sad, because they LOVE playing with each other
  • The GM is upset: He forewarned us about pits in classic AP fashion, hitting us with a variety of pits before we ran into the BBEG. But nobody except the rogue prepared any group-level stuff. And yes, her Feather Fall probably prevented a TPK, and her rope and grappling hook eventually got the paladin out of the pit, but nobody else had anything that could help the paladin, so he was out of the entire fight when a single channel would have turned it around.
So the GM wants to see the PCs succeed, gives them plenty of warning, and they still fail utterly. Considering I'm dealing with the kids' fiasco at the Serpent Fortress in Serpent's Skull myself, oh do I know his pain

  • So a precautionary tale: Even if you don't think it's the best idea, at least stabilizing that downed PC near you might prevent a lot of unhappiness around the table in the future...

Sadly no. I've followed every standard sleep advisory (no screens for an hour before bed, bed is for sexy-time and sleep only, ect.) and every home remedy I can find -- sitting up, aromatherapy, melatonin (worked for years, when I otherwise couldn't get to sleep before 12-2am, but now useless), 5HTP, nasal spray (inconsistent), nasal strips, propping mouth open, strict glucose control (crazy glucose levels keep me awake for other reasons, but ideal glucose levels don't help one bit).

Basically the only thing I can do is try to get my nasal passage as clear as possible (nose-blowing, liberal use of Flonase), get some light exercise before bed, get my heart rate down a bit with meditation, use my APAP machine, take heavy heavy medication, and hope for the best.

If you put "I can shave an angry bear with a skid loader" on your application, they'll call you back.

Yeah, for the first time in my entire career I have to pull the, "If you do that, I'll walk," card.

They're trying to shift us to hourly, which is no big deal, except salaried employees get infinite vacation and hourly employees get 14 days a year.

My manager and VP both know damned well I'm the foundation of the department; if I go, it'll fall apart.

So I have enough leverage to pull it off.

And if not, pay raise, new venue, and a company that doesn't treat me like a cog in a machine. Other than the commute, it's a win-win.

Just spent $1500 to air-purify my entire home. (Portables, not built-in.) I've learned from being in hospital v. being outdoors in Phoenix that clean air definitely helps me, but this is a total gamble that when I go home, breathing clean air for only 8-12 hours a day will help me.

And I have no way of gauging if/how much it helps, other than "How long until I catch another lung bug / am hospitalized again?" Games are so much easier, you know exactly what kind of bonuses and bennies your loot gives you. Sigh.

My group(when they were around) were offense before healing. Honestly the times I actually killed them were like they were from up, to just dead. There was no opportunity for stabilization checks.

Also yeah 5e, my group was asking me why didn't I put my forge cleric floating bonus on the fighters armor. Now the fighter has 16 ac at level 5. My level 1 "tank" cleric has 18 ac. At level 5, everything and their dog is going to be able to hit that 16 ac. Even if I bumped it to 17,it would make no difference. So why don't I just use it to boost my attacks since sharpshooter(works like deadly aim) gives me - 5 to hit and +10 to damage?

If you want me to bump your ac, you have to show you're putting an effort to protect yourself. Like using a shield instead of a 2 handed weapon. But oh no, fighter says "I took great weapon fighting to get more dps."

So how do you expect me to protect you when you're not even taking steps to protect yourself?

Yeah, we're actually getting Whingey Wizard to think these things through, which is impressing me, because he's usually really resistant to anything that lowers his defenses.

But, "You're a 16th-level wizard. There is nothing in this entire book that won't hit you on a 2, so stop even thinking about your armor class and do something else," has helped immensely.

Interesting. Is that what Hi said?

I thought the blame was firmly on my shoulders (he was playing a PC with the Beyond Morality mythic trait, and when he accepted a demon lord's gift and became CE anyway he quit. One of those, "When the GM explicitly says, 'I do not want that ability in a game I am running. Please do not take it because I will restrict it,'" things). But I knew he wasn't enjoying the game before then, and I know he refuses to play at the same table as WW.

We'll see. "Rise of the Runelords" was still our best game ever, and Return of the Runelords is coming.

    Hi WILL play again...

In terms of wizards and AC, they might get their Dex up to 16, then add Mage Armor, Shield, and a +2 deflection bonus from something random (usually PfE) and they're sitting at a whopping 23. My weakest bad guy mooks are +22 to hit.

So, has anyone outside of the Bay Area noticed how emo our fortune cookies have become?

1970-2016: "You will find a new love"
2016+: "If you feel your life is inadequate, just look in the mirror to see the reason why"

We're just getting giggle fits every time we open 'em.

I remember hearing that the one guy who writes fortune cookie fortunes was retiring, and to be replaced with some new guy.

Or maybe that one guy just ran out of positive ideas...and/or positivity.

EDIT: Okay, so the top guy retired.

{makes WIS check: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (15) - 4 = 11} Sooooo... fortune cookie fortune writers ascend to the top similar to how Dread Pirate Roberts did?

Wow, that's three new things learned!

    1) Prepared casting *is* an option. It's just a drawback you can take. All it does is require you to specify how many spell points you dedicate to a given sphere for the day. If the warpriest build I mentioned had taken Prepared Casting, it would have worked out something like this:

    Ah okay, sweet.

    2) When I mentioned PF at-wills, I was referring to the fact that a light spell only, ever, illuminates as a torch. Sure, you get duration and caster-level resistance to dispelling effects, but the light level and radius never change. Jolt/acid splash/ray of frost? Always a 1d3.

This gets at something that's been percolating in my head for a while. Some effects (like damage) really need to scale with level to be worth using at all as levels increase. To take jolt/acid splash/ray of frost for example, well, let's say they did moderate damage at 1st level. Say 1d8, whatever. Without scaling, the character is essentially wasting her action after a few levels go by. There's gotta be a word for these kind of effects.

Other effects (like light spells), while they may get outclassed by higher-level effects, perform their basic function regardless of level (lighting up a small area, frex). So they don't need scaling, at least not like damage does. I'm sure there's a name for these kind of effects too.
