One Punch Man, Season 2, Episode 1: As expected, the animation is terrible. The voice acting went into the toilet. But... they're still following the manga fairly closely, so I'm hoping the story remains solid. But yeah, living up to the global expectations of a massive decline in quality due to switching to a "big box" studio is not a good thing.

Captain Marvel: We all thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's not a, "Get up on your seats and cheer" movie, but it was an excellent way to spend an afternoon with friends.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: Utterly delightful. We ended up binge watching for nearly 3 hours last night. It's not great anime, but it's light-hearted, entertaining, and fun to watch. What more can you ask for?

EDIT: Yes, clothes are too much to ask for.

Re: Taxes

Yeah, the story nationally is that even when people owe less, the IRS didn't deduct enough so their returns are vastly reduced or they even owe money. (politics redacted)

For 2019, I removed all of my exemptions (so now in spite of having 2 kids and a mortgage, both GothBard and I are at -0- exemptions federally) which looks like it should allow us to at least break even, then the combination of the solar tax credit (assuming it survives) and the interest on the loan should net us a nice $10k refund next year.

I'll believe it when I see it...

(I did not watch either TTIGRAAS or OMP dubbed, either, but that was only because it wasn't. Killed my productivity and/or forced me to rewatch episodes. So frustrating!)

That one anime that was advertised that one way back in the '90s?

It says something that I cannot, for the life of me, remember what the actual anime is called, but I remember the advertisement. I'm not sure what it says, exactly - probably not great things about me - but it says something!

Mildly Racy:
Literally the only thing I can remember is, "He prefers her breast stroke." It was advertised as a series of back-and-forth "she wants x/he thinks y" sorts of things, and his were all innuendo.

EDIT: for more memories

I managed to obtain some very old White Dwarf magazines from the 1980s/early '90s at a reasonable price, before it stopped covering other RPGs and just concentrated on advertising Citadel stuff. The UK fantasy roleplaying scene had an interesting grunge/punk/HM edge to its aesthetic which I don't think you had in the US (though I may be wrong about that), as well as lots of crappy childish humour, which is something I enjoy very much.

Someone (I can't remember who) described British RPGs as being 'simultaneously more whimsical and grittier' than US ones, and I kind of agree with that - that's certainly the impression I get when looking at these mags, and at systems like WFRP.

4-5" of snow today. It will all be gone tomorrow.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I did take advantage of the snow for some dangerous fun. I had already swapped out my winter tires last month, so I'm on summers now.

I barely made it out my driveway this morning.

Then I went through some of the twisty roads we have around here with my traction control completely switched off.

I didn't get where I was going very fast, but I had fun doing it.

(Little to no traffic, I'm not a complete idiot, many other caveats apply, at no time did I put anyone else in any form of danger.)

Finally got my [lengthy string of expletives redacted] taxes filed. We've gone from getting a few thousand back each year to getting less than one thousand back, every single penny of which will go to my mother-in-law as the first installment of our debt repayment to her.

I'm really ticked at TurboTax. I've used it for years, and it used to be good, fast, and cheap. Like all companies with virtually no competition, they've gotten progressively less efficient and more expensive, and I'm really tempted to return to pen-and-paper filing for next year.
But, it's done. And with the cross-country move, and the change in employment for both of us, and his Lyft income, and changes in health insurance for all of us, it was a tedious process. I just wish I could feel like I had something to show for all the time I put into it this year.

After seeing the increased Turbotax fee, I did our taxes by hand this year.

In related news,

Spoiler:
The House passed a bill last week that, among generally good provisions, may or may not block the IRS from ever creating free tax-prep software of its own. Which was quickly followed by some congressional Dems writing a bill directing the IRS to do just that, so there may be a legal showdown in a few years.

Anyhow, this coupled with Turbotax's hiked rate, the conservative tax scam, and my impression that this year it took me a lot longer just to find addresses to mail my taxes to -- in prior years I remember the addresses being right there on the form or the instructions, whereas this year they were basically advertisements for tax-prep services -- has got me mighty pessimistic about future tax years. Call me cynical, but the writing on the wall seems to be very ugly.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I must be missing something. I've used Turbotax for years and they never charge a cent for federal taxes (beyond a $4 service fee for if you pay owed taxes via credit or debit card) for their basic service.

Or are you guys talking about the paid advanced services, or filing state taxes? Or both?

I swear, I play with the oddest paladins!

So, this paladin of Torag didn't bull rush his way through a group of sickly peasants to get to the head of the line at a church, but...

...we were in a tactically disadvantageous position against a lich: He had cover and multiple buildings to hide among, while we had to cross a wide-open field to get to him.

So my rogue, being the "distractor" of the party, started sprinting across the open field, Death Warded and Silenced, and ready to give the lich a big unhappy bear hug.
...and the paladin followed her into the open field!!!!

Two Maximized Fireballs later and the paladin was down 90 hit points, the rest of the party was in disarray trying to figure out who to help, and my unscathed rogue reached the lich and Silenced him...
...with nobody else around to actually help beat him up!!!

EDIT: Worked out OK, though: The inquisitor, not being an idiot, went carefully around the back of the building and spotted the other two liches providing support for the first. Once she flushed them out and they had to deal with a battlefield covered with Force Walls, Silence fields, and a now-very-irate paladin smiting anything that moved, it was a mop-up.

That's fine, but if you need an index card because you can't remember all the different types of ground meat in it, that doesn't make it "elevated", it just means you got ripped off by your butcher.
