This is how my brain works. All the time. Which is probably why I'm so damned cynical.

Although, like most people, my brain works better when I have clothes on.

Heading back to work in, oh, half an hour or so. I said 10pm Central earlier, but I still have to download the files before I can actually perform the upgrades. I still don't understand how they think paying me hourly is saving them money.

Freehold, a trailer for a new Battletech Game has been announced.

If you need someone to carry 8 foot timbers, she's the person.

If there's a litter of kittens hidden on a farm, she'll find them.

And co-worker was happy to have someone that hadn't heard all his stories yet.

Wow..I am impressed by Crookshanks strength =)

And how does she find kittens?

My outlook is still taking like 20 minutes to load so eh...meh.

Yay...update 1 worked perfectly well.

Update 2 worked perfectly well.

Update 3 fails before it even starts saying it needs JRE 7.

Um...the last two updates didn't need that...And it's not like JRE 7 is even current...and none of the documentation says it needs that...

What the actual *&@% is going on with this update?

If some of the same people are involved in the interview they may feel like they don't need to continue interviewing him, but that's in a good way. "He's our guy unless one of these remaining people blow us away, and then we'll talk."

Not necessarily.

Back when my sister used to act professionally, she auditioned a number of times for a BIG S.F. theater company. Since she had acting credits at Oregon Shakespeare Festival on her resume, and a couple of indie films, it wasn't that big of a stretch. She kept getting called back to read lines at the final round auditions, but never got cast. She finally heard from someone who wasn't supposed to tell her that they found her really reliable and useful for running lines opposite the men they were considering for roles, but were never actually going to cast her.

So, it's quite possible that WW's the guy this company calls in to say, "Yes, we've considered other qualified applicants" when they had someone else earmarked for the job all along.

Can confirm. My dad works for McKee Foods (the Little Debbie company) and has multiple times been involved in rounds of interviews for promotions or newly-opening positions in his several-years-long-now quest to get off third shift, and after every single one has failed to pan out he nearly always hears through the grapevine that the interviews were essentially meaningless, upper management already had someone in mind for that spot, and they were just waiting for the right time to hire them/for them to finish college/some other reason this round of interviews and prospective promotions that were never intended to go anywhere were necessary.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I got hit with that back when I was a gypsy professor.

Absolutely nailed the interview as one of the best I'd ever given, then heard through the grapevine that they'd already decided on the person they were going to hire before the process even began, and the only reason it took so long was that I actually convinced some of them to change their minds and vote to hire me.

Not enough of them, though.

It's a serious issue in academia to the point that I'm surprised there aren't more lawsuits out there. I've heard nonprofits work the same way, as do some areas of tech (the gaming sector, for example).

I work for a global megacorporation. Heck if I know who I'm hiring.

Clocking out. Good night, everyone.

Ah...and the answer has been found...

This update is trying to, among other things, update the native JRE of the application. It copied the folder with the new JRE in it, but it didn't remove the old folder and rename the new folder. Fix that manually and all is well again.

Ugh.

Yeah my BF wanted us to get gold class seats for that but gold class was already booked. I am happy you're finding some way to destress and have a break. You've earned it!

I’m packing for the coca cola no sugar carnival on Sentosa tomorrow. Since I need to finish 6 game stations in the time limit of 11 am to 6.30 pm, I’ve decided that I won’t stop for lunch (since food on Sentosa is pricy and I may be short of time). I’ve packed 100g of cashew nuts, 4 shortbread fingers, four pork floss sticks, for lunch. That’s about 1287 calories worth of food and about 54 g of protein in the mix(which is technically sufficient to last me an entire day – since I’m a small bit). If the stations in question happen to be spread throughout the beach, I have no qualms running from one station to another if need be, even if in the morning I will have already run 5 km even before the carnival.

I may also go and peek at the Spartan kids being run near the mall (though I’ll have to walk all the way there after my run).

Likely I will have my fruits during breakfast, though there’s an option of bringing a mandarin orange or two around, I just don’t want to have to look for a dustbin to dump the peel in(though it won’t really be hard).

Gosh, this is a little gross.

Going down to the family home this weekend, spending time with the family. The little one has been with his grandparents since Wednesday (he's on Easter break from school, two weeks off), so looking forward to spending some time all together.

Less Good Part:
I'm also telling my parents that my partner is pregnant again. They were adamant that she was going to try to get pregnant to trap me in the relationship and to be careful, and the visit after I tell them we're back together again, I'll be telling them that she is, in fact, pregnant. I'm not looking forward to this conversation.

I enjoyed the movie, but I think it's being over-hyped. It's good, but it's not the best of the Marvel movies good. IMO.

I really hope that you and your partner can reconcile, since it seems to me that your separation is putting strain on both of you and the little one as well. But again if at the end of the day both of you find it's not working out, then you'll have to do what you need to do. Is your partner still planning on moving somewhere else?

I can see where your parents are coming from, they don't want to see you stuck in a bad relationship.

Y'all remember a couple of months ago when Whingey Wizzard had three levels of interviews for a job with a company that he really wanted to work for, and they told him at the final interview that they really wanted him, and then they picked someone else for the job?

About a week and a half ago, they called him and said, "Yeah, so we're sorry about that, but we have this OTHER position open up, and we'd like you to resubmit your materials for this one. Oh, and btw, it's director-level."

So the interview is this morning at 9:00.

If it goes well, second-round interviews will be Monday, and whoever they pick will start May 1st.

Part of me is pissed off because I'm just assuming he won't get it and they're just d**king us around again.

But the job really is kinda right for him.

I don't want to get my hopes up again. But, geez, this would change EVERYTHING.

UPDATE:

Although the second-round interviews were supposed to have happened on Easter Monday, they just emailed Whingey Wizzard *yesterday* to say, "Oh, yeah, btw, you've made the cut for the finalist interviews, we'll let you know when that will be by the end of this week, 'kay?"
I'm guessing they're no longer looking at a May 1 start date for the position.

Thanks Mort. I hope much the same. This'll be our third official time on this particular rodeo, and, even more so than before, we face active disapproval from family and friends. It makes a tough time even tougher, but I respect and understand that they come from a place of love and caring. We'll both be working on making it a good relationship.

On the moving front, no, with me back in the picture, and plans to move back together underway, she no longer has the income vs living expenses concern, not to mention, my job will not accommodate moving. So that's tabled for now.

Well, they're remarkably cheap to fix, but I strongly recommend taking it to a pro.

I've been assembling and disassembling computers and motherboards for 19 years now, so when Impus Minor shattered his phone screen I figured it would be no big deal. I bought the $30 fully-assembled replacement kit and got to work.

Disassembled the phone. No problemo.
Replaced and tested the screen. No problemo.
Reassembled the phone.

As I was trying to put it back in its case, I had to apply some torque to the phone and I heard a loud crackling. The phone was dead. I took it to a pro and he said that the cheapo replacement screens are incredibly fragile; he won't use them. I'd managed to overtorque mine and short out the entire motherboard so I had to buy Impus Minor a new phone. All because the replacement was so cheap.

The pro didn't charge me anything for the diagnosis, but from now on I'm going to him. Takes him under 5 minutes to replace a screen, he uses high-quality parts, and even at $150/hour it's only around $60 parts and labor because he pro-rates his hours.

Not that it's fun to pay $60 to fix an old phone, but it's a lot cheaper than a replacement.

So, this is an interesting phenomenon: In spite of the fact that quite a few friends and family have passed away over the years (by my count 12 to whom I was close enough to hang out with regularly), I've only been to 3 memorial services and -0- funerals. I happen to know that 4 of them were cremated and have their ashes still sitting on shelves somewhere.

So, I finally got invited to an ash-scattering ceremony in May. And I realized that after so many of my friends and family have passed on, it's really rather odd that this'll be my first time actively participating in a scattering.

Ah, well, live and learn to do new weird things.

Geez. I just need to stop biking. It's bad for my blood pressure.

Tirade:
It should be really simple: "You obey the rules of the road. I'll obey the rules of the road. We'll be aware of each other's existence. And it'll all be fine."
Instead, in a 10-minute ride I got:
  • A driver blowing through a Stop sign at 15 mph while talking on the phone just because he saw me in the intersection and didn't want to have to slow down, much less stop.
  • A fellow cyclist blowing through a cyclist-only Stop sign on the bike path (and they try HARD: "Bicycles MUST stop here!" and our own dedicated Stop sign and Stop line) to make a car with the right of way slam on its brakes. And of course I stopped, which made the driver confused, so she just sat there, waiting for me to go. And I refused, because SHE had the right of way. So she got angry and honked at me, not the cyclist who blew through the Stop sign.
  • Similarly, on the way home a car halfway through an intersection stopping in the middle of the intersection to let me blow through a Stop sign and ride through. Nope. Not gonna do it. I am going to stop and respect the right of way, because I am a vehicle. Stop treating me like something different.

  • [/tirade]
EDIT: I guess my view is extremely simple: We have a very well-established, sensible mechanism for establishing right of way. Yielding the right of way to someone else is not "nice". It is stupid and creates chaos, impatience, and potential catastrophe as others who didn't feel like yielding end up going around you or doing something similarly stupid.
