So, after Whingey Wizzard did not get the academic post in Santa Barbara he was trying for earlier this year because he didn't have enough experience, they apparently created a new, minor, position for him in order to give him some experience. And he got an offer yesterday.
The good:
Eight years after getting his PhD, he finally has an academic post, lecturing and dissertation-advising.
It is theoretically a foot in the door to get a better position later.
It's only part-time, roughly a week out of every month, so he can still keep his other part-time job in Oakland, which is flexible.
The bad:
He's going to be away from home. A lot. And the kids are not going to be happy. I just looked at the academic calendar for the coming year, and all I could think of was, "Well, at least he'll be he for their birthdays."

Well, congratulations(?).

Speaking as one who traveled for a living for Impus Major's first couple of years, nightly phone calls and coming back with little trinkets works wonders for a "traveling Dad". I'd call home, NobodysWife would put me on speaker, and I'd talk to Impus Major and he'd just listen (he couldn't talk until he was nearly 3). While on the trip, I'd swing by a toy store and look for an under-$10 bit of nothingness that I could give him when I got home.

So yes, it's hard, but you'd be surprised how resilient the kids will be.

Unfortunately, the elephant in the room is that for a week out of every month, you'll be working full-time AND watching the kids 24/7.

For those weeks, I strongly suggest coming over to our place for free baby-sitting by the imps and a free dinner out from us. We go out with Shiro and Hi almost every Friday, so it would give you a chance to get in some "down time". I know Friday isn't the best of nights, but Tuesday is Strange Aeons, Wednesday is Serpent's Skull, and Thursday is Final Fantasy.

Did I mention we game a lot?

Haha. Yes, he's annoying as all hell, but you don't hang in there for 21 years unless you really like them.

He gets my jokes.
And he puts up with my temper.
And he thinks I'm pretty even though I'm 42 and chunky.
And he can be really sweet, when it occurs to him.

LOL. I think all girls 8 and under do. Did you know <insert silly name for our vodka-loving friend's daughter here> invites him to all of her birthday parties?

Anyway, let us know -- there's the whole, "Getting the boys to watch your two kids for a couple of hours", but I'm sure I can find a carrot that'll tempt them. Impus Minor wants to earn extra cash by baby-sitting anyway, so why not get him some practical practice?

Lest I sound completely self-centered and shallow please let me explain. After 21 years you don't feel in love most days as a rule. I honestly don't think you're supposed to. We have been through things together so heinous and awful that most people in America at least couldn't even comprehend. And we lived through it together. And some days it's enough that there is one person in the whole world who understands what you've been through and what you feel because they're there too and that's the glue that binds us. The weight of story is a powerful bond. And no it's not the same as feeling in love all the time. But I do love him and it's enough for me.

"In love" and "love" are the two most conflated concepts in modern U.S. (and possibly all over) and the world would be a vastly better place, if people actually understood the difference.

One is emotion. That's awesome, but fleeting.

One is work, effort, and dedication - sometimes easy, and sometimes not. And that is something that can last forever, and is probably the m most important thing that can exist.

Also: every couple, every relationship, and every person is different. Projecting your expectations on others? Most always ends badly.

lisamarlene: you sound like you're going to be doing just fine. :)

Congrats on the job, even just part time. :)

The travel thing is an adjustment for sure. My husband travels for work a lot so I know how that goes. Honestly it was easier on the kidlet when he was little than it is now. But a lot of that is that it was a more predictable schedule back then. The constantly changing schedule we have now is definitely more difficult to adapt to since it really messes with routine, and being older the kidlet seems to feel freer to complain about that too. :P
Goodnight phone calls definitely help. The kid and the parent who isn't home. :)

OK, I just *might* have failed in my fatherly duties on teaching my son about the sanctity of human life:

NobodysHome: Oh, holy cow! Impus Major, did you see the news? Remember that crater we visited on Wednesday? Well, on Saturday a guy jumped into it.
Impus Major: A suicide?
NH: Yeah. I'm glad we weren't there for that. I wouldn't want a picture of that sort of thing.
IM: Yeah, but think about it: It would be the ultimate photobomb!

*sigh*

excellent! You get to choose between the Mei, Anna, or milkmaid outfit for our meal. We also have the Mei summer outfit and Mei fine dining outfit available.

I have no idea what Mike pence has to do with it, but as he is named Mike, I do extra damage to him anyway, so whatever.

I could tell you, I guess. But part of the fun, for me at least, is that you guys don't know what the f%$~ I'm on about. Tell you what, I'll explain it in a spoiler so that anyone who wishes to remain in suspense can do so.

The EXPLANATION:
I've been watching a series of YouTube videos day Sean Plott, aka Day9, where he plays old school adventure games while his friends Bill and Sean watch and comment. Sometimes either they, the game, or a combination of the two says something that makes me laugh, so I quote it here. I've linked to a couple parts of singing before.

That's it. That's the big secret. It is what it is.
