I've been reading EGS on and off for years. It was still in the Painted Black arc when I first found it.

You could binge NP and the other side content if you want, presuming you haven't already.

Ps: stats for Jeremy familiar? Lol. (This is of course completely not serious.)

On that note, EGS is loosely responsible for me being in my current situation.

I discovered the comic linked in an ad from the old Keenspot webcomic host service while reading another webcomic, Elf Only Inn. While reading EGS, Keenspot recommended yet another comic - a mediocre pun-laden fantasy comic called Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire. At the time my recognition of how meh it was - and more, unaware of how bad it would eventually become - was absent, and I ended up joining the fan forums for the comic; this is where Scint and I met.

And the rest, they say, is history.

Hey, I liked Dominic Deegan!

I did when I first found it, but after the Storm of Souls arc the while thing turned into a huge mess. And Dominic himself just got more and more Gary Stu and unlikable the longer it progressed.

It wasn't terrible to start with, but the author definitely threw in the towel as far as storytelling and characters went well before it actually ended.

Half the fun of the comic was that the art was interchangeable enough from strip to strip that you could make some really hilarious panel/dialogue swaps. A friend had sent it to me because of the puns, but I mostly stayed because of that thread.

By the end of it, (honestly well before the end of it - I stopped reading a good year or two before it finally gave its death rattle) it was a masterclass in how not to make a comic.

In the annals of NH anecdotes, there are tales of his mother's poor cooking. Everything overcooked and bland. Followed by discussions of learning to cook for self and assuming control of the kitchen by age 5 armed with a sharp knife to chase interlopers away from his carefully prepared chicken piccata with carefully positioned capers.

Kidding. In part.

Looooooooooong story short: My grandmother was born in 1898 and my mother was born in 1931, so my grandmother had to raise a child through the Great Depression. Due to financial issues, my grandfather and grandmother also had to adopt two of my mother's cousins just to keep them from starving.

So my grandmother learned to make the most-frugal possible meals, based entirely on what was available on the ranch that day (they owned a walnut ranch in the California central valley). My mother was a tomboy, and hated cooking with a passion. Add to that that she got a Ph.D. in immunology, and anything that wasn't cooked into jerky was a health threat. (My favorite example: 1/4" pork chops or salmon steaks went into the broiler at 425°F for 25 minutes.)

Fast forward to the late 1970s. My grandmother moved in with us because she could no longer take care of the ranch on her own. My parents' conditions included that she would do all the cooking and cleaning. She demanded help and I got "volunteered". So...
- Until I was 10, dinners were so bad that I started heating canned food instead of my mother's cooking.
- By 10 years old I was helping my grandmother in the kitchen, making Depression-era meals that were frugal and nourishing, but far from tasty.
- Once I was 12, I was put in charge of planning the meals (for 6) every night and making the shopping list.
- By the time I was 13, I asked for (and got) new cookbooks, and started experimenting with Chinese food (Joyce Chen) and some variety (the American Heart Association cookbook).
- By the time I was 18, I was a pretty darned good cook.

So yeah, whenever someone says, "Food like your mother/grandmother used to make," I shudder.

The boss has figured out how to get me to take charge of a job.

He sends another crew to do something on my job site adjacent to what I'm doing and then gives them the barest of instructions and tells the other crew leader "If you have any questions ask Yesterday and do what he says".

Well played.

I think I shall start my weekend early. Angry Orchard here I come. And some DF building while messing around with OBS. Or something.

TEAM SCORPIA

I'm trying to decide how long it'll take Scorpia to realize just how toxic Catra is, and how little she cares for Scorpia. Of course there's always the possibility that Catra will be humanized and will reform, but so far I haven't seen a hint of that possibility...

Why does NobodysHome hate off-permit work? Because of the eternal stress it causes.

Our fireplace guys came and put in our new fireplace, and I was pretty surprised that we went through a well-established company in Berkeley yet there were no permits to be seen, nor was our work ever inspected. While it could be considered an "edge case" (they were replacing an existing gas heater with a gas fireplace), considering it involved framing, electrical work, gas work, and drywalling, I'm fairly sure they were working off-permit and could have been busted for it.

We brought them back for the deck and pergola and that's clearly exempted in the code: It was an "outdoor structure" small enough to be exempt, but I wouldn't be surprised if Albany has some arcane law on that, too. (Since they'd skipped the permit the first time I did due diligence on the pergola and everything I could find said it was OK, but I'm sure I missed something.)

Now they're re-doing our bathroom and again, even though they're replacing existing fixtures I'm sure Albany would want a permit for it, but they're not going to get one.

Why does this stress me?

Because I just found out the appraiser wants to do an indoor inspection, which will likely take place either before or during the bathroom renovation, and I'm sure he'll notice the lack of a posted permit.

So I just have to hope the appraiser doesn't decide to rat me out.

And let's be blunt: If getting a permit for a bathroom refit was just, "Go in, pay $500, walk out with a permit," I'd do it in a heartbeat. But Albany is rather infamous for refusing or delaying pretty much all construction permits to the point that most contractors just ignore the city.

Add too much red tape and the world ignores you...

EDIT: OK. Holy carp. After posting I thought, "OK, how much trouble can it be?"
Well, in order to get any kind of permit in Albany these days, your job site needs:
- A site-specific COVID-19 supervisor
- A daily screening protocol for all staff
- Posted notices, plastic sheeting between every room, attendance logs, etc., etc., etc.

Basically, I can 100% guarantee that every job site in Albany right now is unpermitted. Because I can see the workers, and they're not doing any of that stuff.

So... less stressed that OUR work will be off-permit, but still frustrated that Albany makes it SO hard to get any work done on your house. It's like, "Let me work on my house and I'll give you money to pay your inspector to make sure the work is done right. Win-win, OK?"

My mom is not a good cook - and her mom was even worse. I remember chicken parboiled and then put in the oven with no seasoning.

But my mom is an amazing baker (entirely different skill set). When she wants to help, I let her make dessert.

Meh. I reached the final fight in F3ar and it is... Annoying. Yeah, let's stick with that term.

Aaaand, finished.

Wait, what, already?!

*checks* 13.7 hours? Are you f-ing kidding me? So short?

Ah, well, better than none. It's a good horror fps shooter, despite my complaints on various details (two weapon slots? TWO?! occasionally poor placement of save checkpoints, and design of some encounters).

Between two previous Fear games and this one it has been a the hell of a ride.

Technically I could replay all the 8 intervals as <spoiler> (I played first three) and try to get the other ending, but I am not really feeling like it. I will watch the other ending movie on YT instead.

Gamer's Paradox:

When I played completely linear F3ar I missed open worldness of Far Cry. When I played open world Shadow Of Mordor I got to the point where I got a sort of bored with the freedom I have. I will get back to it soon, I might rush toward the end or get lost again in the freedom of sneakily murdering throngs of orcs.

Installing Hard Reset in mean time. We'll see what it's worth, though I am pretty sure it isn't stealthy game like Fear or Far Cry...

Drejk wrote:

Crysis 2 took me 13.8 hours...

Ghost of Tsushima is a blast so far!

I'm currently recruiting the Straw Hat Men to join my army.

I've never paid attention to how much time I spent on a video game.

Steam shows the total playtime for each game.

Hard Reset was a miss. An old-skool fpp shooter. Nice looking (though I was getting a mild nauseous vibe, might be caused by weather, I had light headache earlier), the early gameplay was meh-ish, though. Lots of small, hard to hit robots swarming you early on, plus big robots that are charging you. You should probably hide behind covers and explode nearby objects to kill it, right? If only there were sufficient covers that you can hide behind without running into all the obstacles, and the enemies weren't much faster than you, catching you when you try to strafe or run away to that cover.

I gave up after multiple reloads when trying to fight waves of robots in a large open area with only minimal cover, only for the next wave spawn with a big robot among many small robots.

Trying Hard Reset Redux instead.

Redux is slightly better - I think that enemies are either less resistant to weapons or the hit detection is better because they were dying faster and I defeated those swarms fast enough to take advantage of a cover when fighting big robots (yes, the final "wave" was composed of two more big robots).

I reached the second level but I have to get a break because it is getting me dizzy. It's still annoying in an old-skool fpp style.

I would like to very sincerely thank everyone who wished me well on my birthday.

I'm about to go home. Have a good weekend, everyone.

Belated Happy Birthday John!

spoilered for anyone who doesn't want to begin their Saturday with LM's whinging:

So, this has been a garbage week that ended, appropriately enough, with a dumpster fire.

We had one teacher in my grade level out all week because her own two kids were sick with low-grade fever and sniffles (it's the start of ragweed, cedar, and juniper pollen season here in Texas), so they all had to get tested.

Which means that the staff member whose job it is to make sure that the rest of us get one 15-minute break each day and help us with the constant sanitizing of all the things had to sub for her instead.

So it was already a busy week with no breaks, which means my arthritis was acting up, which means I wasn't sleeping well.

So yesterday morning I woke up at four feeling suicidal again, not for any real reason, just because my brain is a sadistic bastard and hates me. So I went running, with the constant refrain in my head of "God, wouldn't it be great for it all to just be over? SHUT THE F%*$ UP!" on repeat. Which was fun.

But then I got home and checked my work email, and I had something called a "Kudoboard" with belated birthday greetings from all of my students' families, with really sweet and kind messages, and I started crying, and the suicidal thoughts went away. Which was nice.

And I made breakfast and made the pizza dough and set it to rise and packed lunchboxes.

And then I got to school and checked my work email again and had a (very mildly) upset email from a parent, because I had misread a situation between their child and another child yesterday, and hadn't wanted to listen to *why* he had gotten into a fight with the other kid and threatened her with a marker and made her cry (yes, Kindergarteners threaten to shiv each other with markers, and yes, it's upsetting to them, and no, I didn't f+*%ing want to listen to it while I was scrubbing out the disgusting turtle tank during naptime). But apparently she was getting to close to his desk and making him feel worried he would get Covid and die, so he felt justified, and cried when he told his parents that mean Ms. LM said "I don't want to hear it".

So I sent an apology email to the parents, and had a good conversation with the kid when he arrived, and had yet *another* conversation with my class about how they can hold out their hands in front of them and say, "Please respect my distance; I feel unsafe", and we did some role-play, and the day looked like it was going to go a little better.

I mean, yeah, there were pee accidents on the floor and arguments between kids and all the usual shit, but it was probably the best day of the week. And I took Hermione and Val to ballet and got home at six and started making dinner and my phone started buzzing, and I picked it up to check my messages, and found out we've had our first positive Covid case on campus.

Not in my classroom, nor in Val's or Hermione's, so we don't have to quarantine or test, and our classrooms will open as normal on Monday, but they're not even telling the faculty which classroom *is* shut down or which kid got it. (But apparently it's not the teacher's kid who was out during the week.)

So I kind of broke down a little. I started sobbing and hyperventilating and Hermione came and rubbed my back and hugged me until I stopped, and then I felt guilty.

And then I slept for like nine hours which I never do and then I went running.

I'm a mess.
We're only three months into the school year and we've got eight months to go and I don't know if I can do this.

So... yeah. Happy Saturday.

Let me know what they like best, I tried to ask yesterday but I think it got lost in the text chain. It's my fault, I should have just looked up what poutine is instead of guessing, but I was grocery shopping, so.

Definitely blame Freehold.

The internet is a strange and mysterious place.

Yesterday Impus Minor received a box from Home Depot with no indication as to who shipped it. Going to Home Depot's tracking site, you're not allowed to know who sent it unless you already know their email address, so that was a dead end.

In the box was a 4' black skeleton decoration for Halloween.

We have no idea who sent it, nor why.

In the early years of the internet this would have caused me an extreme amount of worry. "Why is someone sending Impus Minor presents? Are they trying to send him a message? Is it some scam? Some stalker?"

These days it's just, "Meh, it's probably a stupid joke from one of his friends. Who cares?"

But now we have yet another useless decoration for the Halloween That Won't Happen...
