What kind of Steam player am I?

Well, all these little alert thingies pop up all the time to tell me that "so-and-so is playing such-and-such", and I've just gotten so used to ignoring them that they barely even register any more.

So hi, TacticsLion! And I guess we're NOT going to play Age of Mythology last Saturday night! :-P

But apologies; I hate it when people ignore me. I just had no idea Steam hid your messages so well if you didn't react to them now now NOW!!!!

Hey, my dude, no problem! No apologies necessary!

I figured you were either away from your computer or otherwise not able to notice or see my messages. It only makes sense!

:D

(Glad I finally found this post, again.)

So, while I cut Gen Z a lot of slack because I'm dealing with similar issues and I'm two generations ahead of them (my favorite being that "Gen X doesn't care", while when they actually looked at volunteer hours, Gen X trounced both Boomers and Millenials), there are some people for whom I have *NO* patience.

I'm looking at *YOU*, Mr. "I'm attending a meeting with 50 other people, but I have a more important call to take and I can't possibly be bothered to mute my microphone."

I really don't care what you're doing during the meeting. Just don't make me listen to it!!!!

Luckily, mine was a non functional alcoholic with an occupational license who's twin brother was the school superintendent and would get blasted at the bar across the street from our apartment.

Speaking of driver training and alcoholism, Impus Major's test is on Friday, and I'm a bit concerned. The problem is, after 10 years of alcoholism, my memory of my early years is pretty much whitewashed:

- I know that I got 10-15 minutes a day with the school driving instructor, 5 days a week, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't for the whole semester; just part of it. But let's just say 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week, 19 weeks (and I think the semesters were shorter, but whatever) = 950 minutes of driving with my driving instructor. Call it 16 hours.

- I know my father worked with me on learning to drive the Volvo, because my few vivid memories of him teaching me are of him laughing as I got stuck at uphill Stop signs and agitated drivers honking and having to go around. But honestly, I don't recall spending a lot of time with him, and you'd think I would, so maybe 10 more hours?

Basically, the best my shoddy memory can piece together is 26 hours of driver training before taking the test, and I barely passed. But I'm pretty sure I must have driven more than that; I just don't remember.

Impus Major has had only 24 1/2 hours with me, and we're planning another 3 hours this week, so if my memory isn't completely wrong he'll have just about as much experience as I did.

But driving with him, he's still got serious experience issues he needs to deal with: He has trouble maintaining following distance or noticing multiple stimuli. All his driving will be with a friend in the passenger seat, so I think he'll be OK. But I'm not going to relax about his driving until he has a couple hundred hours under his belt.

All of that's super fair.

Also this!

Also, also: different people really, really do respond differently to the same things. It's okay if what he absorbs is at a different rate. From everything you've said, with practice and guidance, I'm sure he'll be very safe as a driver. Being able to handle multiple stimuli is a skill that just takes time, sometimes, and maintaining distance is more about learning how to handle cars - and each car handles quite differently. With that experience, it should be fine.

May have figured out part of the reason why the back-up issue at work hasn't been fixed yet. I called tech support about it again a few minutes ago. She said there were no open tickets about it in the system, and asked if I had any of the old ticket numbers. I gave her the one I found for the first time I called (on 10/24), and she said it was marked as "Resolved" and closed. She also found three other old tickets about the back-up, all also marked "Resolved" and closed. So, the reason nothing was being done about it was that the support people were claiming to have fixed the problem, when they actually didn't do anything helpful, instead of marking it for escalation or transfer to another department (like hardware, since my money is on the problem being that the drive is failing). That's really infuriating.

At least the keyboard problem got fixed. Apparently a bunch of hotels had the same issue. Seems to be related to a software update that pushed through a day or two back.

Geez, I hope I didn't chase Ragadolf off!

I'm 99% sure his comment about lazy, video gaming Gen Zers was tongue-in-cheek, but being a Gen Xer (blocked by Boomers from doing anything, then accused by Boomers of being indifferent do-nothings) who volunteers a large amount of my time to work with Gen Zers (200+ hours/year), I get uppity when they get blanket disparagements.

As you might have noticed...

Yep, I get yah.

My daughter did not get her license until 17, took and passed a private drivers training program, and she still gave me a heart attack every time I rode with her.
(NOW I know how my mother felt, I guess?) ;P

Fast forward a couple of years, add 1 entire long summer working and living at Space Camp in Huntsville, where you cannot go ANYwhere from the main base without getting on the expressway. She is much improved. ;)
(At least getting onto teh highway no longer frightens her.)

NOW my 16 year old wants to get his license, so we have the same plan, next summer when he is 17 he will go to the same private training (proven track record) and then get his license.

Not worried about the training, my worry is that he is having extreme teen-angst issues, bordering on full-blown anxiety, with bouts of extreme self-worth issuers. (Sorry, did not mean to ramble, we are working on them) In short I'm concerned with him having a meltdown while driving! ;P

(Aged Wizzie is worried, Just a little.)

In California they make it financially infeasible to let your 16-year-old drive. As I mentioned, you have to pay for a 10-hour online course ($500-$1000). Then pay for 10 hours of training ($1000). Then even though they're severely restricted in where they can drive (to/from school and work, only during daytime, other nonsense), insurance is $3000-$4000 more per year until they're 18.

So one woman did the analysis and told me that getting my kids licenses at 16 would cost me $10,000 over waiting until they were 18. I didn't double-check her math, but it sounds about right. So my kids can wait.

(Impus Major turned 18 this year, hence all the driver training stuff.)

But yeah, my fear isn't distraction or anxiety; he's a very responsible driver. My fear is that his brain just don't process input quickly enough. But in the one emergency situation he got into while training (completely the other driver's fault), he performed admirably, which made me feel MUCH better.

EDIT: And good timing!

Well, this week'll be the big test of the new roof's insulation. We still have no heat in the living room (the contractor shows up on Monday to give us a bid, and then who knows how long it'll take him to actually get to work?). The forecast has clouds and highs in the 50s for the next 3 days. Because of the clouds the lows are up to the high 40s, but it means the house isn't going to be getting heat from outside for a few days. We'll see how I persevere.

On the other hand, the little electric space heater in the garage is doing an amazing job; I'm pretty proud of my insulation in there; it's amazing how quickly the entire room heats up into the 70s.

And when you're running a solar house, electric space heaters suddenly become more economical than gas heating the whole house instead of less.

As far as driver's license goes, even though I went through driver's ed at 16 I didn't actually get my license until I was 23 and the General made it a prerequisite for going out west.
