Liberty's Edge

Hey all,

PLayed 3.5 to death, wasn't interested in PF at first, never really clicked with 4th edition, not nagged by friends to try PF, was finally won over by the Advanced PLayer's Guide.

(deep breath)

Anyway, couple of questions, mostly based in 3.5 knowledge:

1) Is an Animal Companion worth having, or do they need a bunch of additions to work out? I was considering the dire bat, if it matters. I have Bestiary 1 and Bestiary 2 is waiting for me at the FLGS.

2) Is the character wealth by level decent? I remember we used to double in the 3.5 days.

1) An animal companion is definitively worth having, I'm playing a 10th level cavalier right now and my horse is better at fighting than I am.

2) Wealth per level is pretty much the same as 3.5 I think, but if you like a game with more bling you could just increase it if you want.

Ack! I hope you're exaggerating. ;)

1. Yes, but they are not all equal. The Big Cat seem to be the best ones.

2. I never doubled it in 3.5 so I guess that is a play style issue. If you doubled it in 3.5 you may have the same issues in PF.

1) Yes, Animal Companions are worth having, but its my opinion that they are only worth it for the first half of your adventuring career (levels 1-10). In my opinion, they become a liability after that.

2) You doubled the wealth by level? My last 3.5 DM ran a campaign that was only about 20% of the suggested wealth by level. I don't think I even had a single magic item through my character's first 8 levels (not counting the evil artifact we were trying to destroy). We still had fun. As a Pathfinder GM now, I don't even pay attention to the suggested wealth by level. What I'm trying to say is, make your wealth by level whatever you want it to be.

Liberty's Edge

I know you didn't ask for it, but may I please make a suggestion to help you transition from 3.5 to PF?

Suggestion: Read the feats. Even the ones that sound familiar. Dodge, Power Attack, and Cleave are great examples of changed feats. Also, re-read any spell you cast before you cast it.

Hehe, My character is of the order of the dragon and mostly based on aiding others or fighting defensively. Without challenge or buffs my horse frequently outdamages me.

Funny thing, I was just discussing this with my Kingmaker DM that plays in my RotRL's. Neither of us even bothers with the WBL tables, and our players are well below. Mine run about 70%, and in his we run about 50%. It hasn't really bothered either group.

So I second the statement "Make your wealth by level whatever you want it to be." I have always viewed it as a suggestion as opposed to a RULE anyway.

Not to mention your horse has more magical items than most of your cohorts. Then again, as you say, you're built completely for defense/support, using your defender sword for AC, and do you even have power attack?

That said, most CR-equivalent monsters pre-tweak need a 20 on the die to hit, so... yeah.

WBL doesn't matter much until someone dies, isn't raised, and you are trying to figure out "how much" they come back with. WBL is a handy way to handle it- otherwise the DM has to eyeball it. Eyeballing it isn't bad, but it is just a lil more work to have to do.

Your character must have ranks in Perform (Sing) so he can do the whole "Look at my horse, my horse is amazing" routine!

If I remember correctly, you get a bit more wealth than you used to (though, on the other hand, ability score booster items work a bit differently now, and are more expensive if you go for multiple boosts, so that might balance out)

On the other hand, the races and classes got a bit of a boost for the most part, which means that they don't need quite as much dough as before, especially some of the classes that used to suck but are OK now.

On the other hand, wealth alone does not determine your power level. How do you generate ability scores, what sorts of races are you allowed to play?

Grand Lodge

2) Wealth by level in Pathfinder is only slightly higher than 3.5.

Funny enough that song is a running gag around our table :P

Liberty's Edge

Thanks all! If wealth is more or less the same, we will [rpbably go with the old rule.

The DM likes Really Big Monsters and such and so wants us to be powerful, with nastiness lurking.

A little more info -

We will be starting at level 5 or 6 (this is not nailed down yet).

We will do point buy, probably the High Fantasy rule.

I will be playing a Half Orc Inquisitor - I want to take the Animal Domain and get the companion that way. There are probably better things to do but I liked the idea, and it seemed somewhat applicable w/ the teamwork abilities.

Halforc is for the intimidate bonus in APG and being able to take scent as a feat.

Will re-read the feats.

One thing I liked about inquisitor with animal domain is the speak with animals 3+wis per day...
Trying to track something down, you go ask a squirrel "hey did you see a guy run past here?" lol

Either that, or "Do you swear off the devil, little woodland creature?"

I'm fairly new to PF but I've been playing D&D since its inception way back when it came in a white box, with 3 soft cover books, and have been playing it ever since (with the exception of 4.0).

In any event, a group of friends (myself included) have decided to give PF a try. As such, I've been converting my 8th level Rogue to PF and have run into a small problem.

Using various character generator programs found around the Internet, I entered the data but I'm a little confused about one of the skills. My Rogue has a Dexterity of 20 and wears no armour. Entering the Disable Device stats, I have 8 Ranks + 5 Dexterity + 3 Misc (which I presume is due to my lack of armour) and then it becomes a little confusing. If I read correctly, I should get an additional + 4 for Trap Finding and negate the - 2 for lack of Thieves' Tools as I have a set. Final result, if I understand things should be 22, and yet, one says 18, while the other says 20 (using two different generator programs). Which is correct?

Well, I don't know exactly what you are looking at, but I assume the +3 is because its a class skill for a rogue.

So, 8 ranks + 5 Dex + 3 Class Skill + 4 Trapfinding (1/2 your level) = 20.

Oddly enough, the Disable Device skill lists a -10 for picking locks without theves' tools and has no mention of a mod for traps, yet the thieves tools entry lists a -2 for both if you lack thieves' tools, and no mention of a -10 mod. Regardless, you stated you had the tools, so your mod should be 20.

@KaeYoss

That just made me think of the Woodland Critters from South Park.. lol
They should definitely be the target of a very vengeful inquisitor...

You definitely want to look at this.

Dammit KaeYoss, you made me laugh. I'm glad I had already finished drinking my cup of coffee already. :-P

Of course. I did it to myself, too. After I wrote that, I had to go and watch that again. :D

Yes, I've been told that this is a somewhat common consequence of reading my posts. So read at your own risk!
