How do you view characters by level?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

After running so many games at various different levels, I've found it interesting how differently people imagine their characters being depending on their levels.

For example, I've seen first level characters want to be famous, while 15th level characters be an unknown nobody coming out of no where.

I picture levels 1-3 as being like an average joe that is doing something crazy or brave.

4-6 as becoming akin to a local celebrity/hero

7-9 you start handling exploits that cover a whole state or province

10-13 you being helped out a whole kingdom
14-17 your saving entire continents
and finaly 18-20 your saving the world.

what are some of your thoughts?

For me, the 'notoriety' of characters can vary between one character and the next, regardless of level.

One might be playing a 'low key' type who keeps their identity hidden even when the party is dealing with kings.

Another might ham things up, and be a national celebrity at level 1 or 2 (with background supporting it of course.)

More important for me rather than notoriety, is the 'level' of the game. Understanding that Conan is 6th level or less, That Beowulf capped out at 10th level at the very highest possible (and potentially lower) and accepting that the nature of the game changes the higher it goes.
