short form: you're over analyzing.
Longer form:
As an aside, be VERY careful asking advice on the boards. You don't want to give away too much and have your item DQed.

For those of you making powerful items, are you including weaknesses as a counterbalance?
I got worried my item effect was too powerful and now find myself adding weaknesses to the effect.
Make sure you are studying all the previous years winners. That helps alot. Plus, read the very handy Auto-Reject rules that Sean put together here (Wondrous Item Auto-reject Advice).
You can have a powerful item without any counterbalance as long as you have the building blocks (cost, CL, price) priced right. And, remember, it's only 300 words. Most of your more powerful items require more verbiage. It would be best to go with something less powerful. Just my 2 cents worth.

also if your writing it in MS Word, any 2 word combo with a backslash such as hot/cold shows up as 1 word in MS but counts as 2 possibly 3 when you submit your item. I ran into this and had to word a few sentences differently to get back down to 300 or less words
Ok, now you have me worried Vikking! My unformatted word count was below the limit in MS word by a couple of words. I checked it again after applying the BBCode tags (in MS Word) and I was still good-to-go. After pasting it into the submission field I looked desperately for the total word count which I understood would be posted somewhere at the top of my submission but could not find it. I must be blind!
So, was it only the entries themselves which had a word counter feature or can this be checked with any post? I would like to test this to put my mind at ease.

Only the entry form, but you could always log in with a second account and use the entry form to just "Preview" (there is a Preview button to click) and see what the word count is. Be very careful not to submit it a second time though...

the word count should be displayed when you hit the preview button, but I haven't tried it myself.
Well, when I preview this reply for example, I do not see a word count either in the preview window or beside my name which suggests that the word-counter is either a feature for the entries only or I'm blind as a bat.

Well, only in the submission screen ;) , my bad.

Go to submit your item using the submission tool, press preview and you will see the word count. Cancel out before submitting.

Unfortunately I posted it already so it looks like I won't be able to test this without making a separate account which seems a little risky to do. Oh well, thanks for the help guys!
