He's my favorite sort of Lawful Evil fellow: he's all ready to help the heroes because hey--he doesn't want the world to end either. Destroying the world interferes with his own plans or ambitions.

But the heroes can feel dirty about it if they let him help them. ;)

Either that, or the old man just has had to kill a few revolutionaries with it. After-all, he 'parried the puns.' A joke doesn't really carry any weight if you counter it with another one (incidentally, I found his wordcrafting better, which makes some sense considering how much older he is and the position he has.)
