Sajan Krama Sumna
Suspect I will be released via ooze death rather than having to escape the grapple, so would like feedback on any hits on my ooze before I declare my action. Wow these things have a lot of HP, i've done 20 damage alone :P.
Nuveril
Seeing Sajan disappear into the murky slime, Nuveril cries out, "Idiot! Get out of the way!" A rush of adrenaline fills her body just as Sabeen's fortune washes over her. She swings her warhammer with great strength and wild abandon.
Hammer 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 Fortune roll 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Damage 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Madu 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 Damage 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Sorry, forgot to explicitly state she's raging. Nuveril's profile is updated now.
Sajan Krama Sumna
Sajan begins to attempt to yank himself out of the engulf, but Nuveril batters Sajan with her hammer and madu. The giant is still concious despite the punishment.
Does Nuveril kill the ooze? Need to know for my action :). I've assumed Sajan takes half the damage from Nuveril's blows, does it still work like that?
Current HP= 0.
DM Dan E
Nuveril smashes into the ooze with warhammer and shield literally tearing it into pieces. As she pounds into it the parts holding Sajan weaken and fall as the creature tries to preserve its rapidly decreasing mass. At the end she is nearly covered in ooze but there is nothing left of the creature but a dozen small puddles which flail, trying to re-form, and then stop moving.
Edit: Engulfed creates the pinned condition. This seems to be functionally identical to achieving a pin through grappling so I think Sajan takes no damage from Nuveril.
Sajan Krama Sumna
Released from the ooze, Sajan shakes his head groggily, hurling himself at the next ooze with ferocity.
If Sajan does take half damage from Nuveril, he collapses after striking the next ooze.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
DM Dan E
Should have resolved Arjun's hit before Nuveril's but luckily the effect is the same.
Arjun's stone smacks into the creature with a meaty thud, wounding it further but stopping just short of killing it and Nuveril completes the job as above.
The remaining ooze's action may change those yet to act so feel free.
If the ooze has any reaction to the death of its fellow it doesn't show it continuing its frenzied attacking. It moves to engulf both Grall and the wounded Khalid....
As above, reflex to avoid, AOO but you take it.
Linah Jamil'Kaid
Round 2, initiative 5
"Khalid, no! Step back and heal yourself!", Linah cries out as the inquisitor jumps up and engages the plantbeast. The birthmark on her palm begins to glow as warm energy fills the room.
Move action to take a 5ft step closer to the plantbeast.
Standard action to channel positive energy (excluding the beast with my Selective channel feat: 1d6 ⇒ 1 d'oh!
Linah's healing is no depleted (except for Rebuke death which can heal creatures on negative hit points).
DM Dan E
Still on the ground, Khalid rolls desperately away from the creature. A tendril of ooze snakes out to hook around his leg but he manges to pull free and avoid the creature by inches. 14 vs DC 14!
Grall on the other hand hammers his falchion at the creature as it covers him, carving away a large slice of ooze but becoming covered just as Sajan was a few moments before.
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 damage
Plus fort save please. You have the pinned condition.
Crazy high damage rolls this fight.
DM Dan E
Khalid regains his feet, provoking another attack. He is hit again before he can strike.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 191d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Another fort save please.
Sajan charges across the room, slipping smoothly through the gap in tables (to H,25) pounding the remaining ooze with several quick blow from the side. Together, he and Grall have done substantial damage to the thing and ooze is flowing slowly but steadily away from its mass. However it still manages to maintains enough cohesion to hold Grall tightly.
A pulse of healing energy emits from Linah. Weak but still of great help to the battered inquisitor.
Grall you are up. Please see the pinned condition for your options.
DM Dan E
With a roar Grall manages to rip himself free of the ooze's grip. Your in the same square but I've put you on top on the map to show your free.
Round 3
Ordered Initiative
- Sabeen
- Arjun
- Nuveril
- Creature 1 (leaking ooze)
- Khalid (I have you prone yet again on 1hp)
- Sajan
- Linah
- Grall
Sabeen quickly considers her options for bringing the creature down before it has a chance to attack again and settles on the most direct, bringing her crossbow to bear and sighting between Linah and Khalid.
1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 4 = 91d8 ⇒ 4
The shot is true, sinking into the middle of the largest remaining piece of the creature. It quivers violently and for a second you think the battle is over only for it reform for one last desperate lunge. 1hp!
Up to Arjun and Nuveril to finish it.
DM Dan E
Arjun's sling stone may be small but it hits the ooze square on and is enough to finally drop it. It falls apart, ooze spreading across the floor and down the drain.
Combat is over.
Congratulations you will reach level 2 after your next rest period. For those who are interested they have 28hp by RAW, they received an extra 3hp each in exchange for slightly lower damage and lower save DCs. Still, a CR4 encounter so nice work even with 7.
Arjun Srivastava
Arjun lets out an audible sigh of relief. "Thank the All-Seeing Eye! I would never had thought that an ooze from the Darklands could be found in the Katapeshi wastes! Perhaps we should rest and heal ourselves? I think that barracks on the first floor looked like decent enough accomodations." Arjun walks over to Khalid and administers a cure light wounds extract.
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
After healing Khalid, Arjun takes 20 on a Perception check to search the room. Total check is 25.
Linah Jamil'Kaid
Linah sits down on the floor panting. "What was those things?", she asks Arjun. After taking a moment to catch her breath she scans the room for the presence of magic.
Cast Detect magic.
"My powers are all but depleted. I would like to replenish my powers but i fear i would not get any rest until this place is safe. As we press on, please be careful.", Linah says as and gives Khalid a meaning look.
Woho, new lvl soon! \o/
Khalid Al Ha'zareen
|
"Thank you Master Arjun, the elixir was most appreciated." Khalid says as he picks himself off of the ground.
"As for the rest of the monastery, before we make a decision, we need to evaluate what resources we have left. I am missing but one spell and one daily use of calling flame, I can continue if that is what we choose to do."
Nuveril
Nuveril swings around toward the other ooze and seems slightly disappointed to see it disintegrate at the sling stone's collision. She bends over for a few seconds, her hands on her knees, then straightens up again with a smile of satisfaction. "It is a good weapon," she says again, contemplating her new hammer and cherishing the image of the unnatural creature flying apart into puddles under her assault.
DM Dan E
Linah you cast your magic around the room. I assume your doing a fairly casual scan rather than examining every square inch. It is a bit frustrating. There seem to be all sorts of very weak magic auras in the room, strong enough for you to sense if faintly but not strong enough for you to read. They seem to centre on the table and somewhat oddly the drains. Whatever magic was used here it has faded. Sabeen does the same thing and confirms your findings.
An exception is the various tubes many of which have weak transmutation magic, likely some kind of protection for their contents. You may like to come back to that though. Sajan's mage armour only has a few minutes left.
The equipment in the room makes it a masterwork alchemy lab (+1 to craft alchemy checks) although it would be fairly difficult to move it all.
Arjun Srivastava
"I recognize this equipment. An alchemical lab! It is old, but still serviceable. That would explain the strange fungus and ooze. Father Zantus will undoubtedly be interested in this room when we are finished securing the monastery." Arjun goes to the table and drains and examines them.
DM Dan E
Off to bed for me but one last post. I've updated the site to include a map of the entire monastery as you will have explored it with this room.
Arjun the equipment is all very recognisable to you. The drains seem to have a fairly mundane purpose of catching overflow and delivering it elsewhere. Linah also would have seen a broadly similar set-up for the preperation of healing and protective elixirs in her monastery even if she is less familiar with the equipment's actual use.
The doors to the north are large solid slabs of stone but they are unlocked and open easily enough to Sajan with a bit of effort. Stale air wafts up the corridor as it does but the air from beyond is dry, the damp from the laboratory does not appear to have penetrated beyond the doors.
Beyond the door is the monastery’s undercrypt: a series of ten foot widerough hewn passages dug in a double-cross formation. The
main thoroughfare runs north to south, with two similar eastwest
passages crossing the main hall about fifty feet apart.
An eerie silence pervades the entire area, the floors are literally covered in bones. Hundreds of honored worshipers of Sarenrae would originally have been interned in shallow niches carved into the walls of the east-west passages but most of these skeletal remains seem to have been roughly tossed from their niches.
In the light of Sabeen's dancing lights, the crossing to the north seems to have a particularly large clumping of bones which lie in small heaps against the back walls and up the northern corridor which seems to end in stairs going up. Even at this distance you can see remains of orange clothing admidst the heaps. You think this lines up with the stairs in the shrine/statue room.
You would have expected the monks here to have worn orange robes but they would not have been interned in them.
Grall
Why we rrrush? Everyone tired, it is not wise to press on while weak. I agree with potion thrrrower, why not rrrest and rrregain strrrength and blessings from Sarrrenrrrae?
Grall is covered with abrasions from the ooze and looks obviously injured and exhausted. 9/17 HP and no rage rounds left.
DM Dan E
Just a note as its been a while and a fair few pages back since you started exploring the monastery. With the exploration of this room you've now completed your immediate task from Almah and could if you wish give her the all clear to bring the rest of the people up. She is awaiting your report either way. If your not happy that the monastery is safe you presume she would order a camp set where she is, up in the hills about a mile away. That may bring its own dangers of course and time may or may not be ticking.
Nuveril
Nuveril looks at the piles of bones with distaste. "Why throw your dead down here like refuse?" she asks. "Their flesh is wasted, to rot away to filth in the corners of this charnel pit rather than to return to nature and strengthen their tribe."
We still have the baboons on a leash to do something with. Take them back to Almah for pets?
