Question about Iomedae

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I have a question about Iomedae. In her section in the Pathfinder Chronicles: Gods & Magic, it says that she loathes those who abuse good in the name of greater good. What does that mean? I have my own thoughts, but I would like to get your input. Thanks in advance.

My interpretation is that she believes that the ends do not justify the means.

No this must be done 'for the greater good'.

What Tanis said.

In effect Iomedae holds her followers and herself to a higher standard. It may be easy to commit a dubious act to result in a greater good but Iomedae frowns on this. For her and her followers the commitment to strict morality is a central tenet of the faith. Ignoring that morality for a second, even when the result of it would be the promotion of good overall, is too high a price to pay.

An example. Say a follower of Iomedae is searching for some kidnapped children who are going to be sacrificed by a cult of Rovugug. The follower of Iomedae through some investigation finds out that the local head of the thieves guild has some information. After a conversation with the guild leader he offers to give the follower of Iomedae the information if they go down the docks and beat up someone who owes him money.

A follower of, say, Cayden Cailean, would likely grumble a bit, remind themselves that the children are more important and head out. A follower of Iomedae on the other hand would refuse point blank to do that. It is against his/her moral fibre to commit such an immoral act to gain the information despite the fact that in the long run the children are more important. The follower of Iomodae would find another way (perhaps by using his/her own money to pay the person's debt).

It's not easy being strict LG!

It also means she's most likely pissed about the #$%! going on in Mendev in her name. Persecution of native peoples, burning people alive, etc, all in the name of the "greater good".

Basically, her Inquisitors would be going after damn near most fictional characters belonging to an Inquisition in fantasy or historical fiction, given their track records.

yeppers, I agree. I have always been a bit disappointed in what her "best and brightest" were doing in her name o'er there. I think when the inevitable house cleaning comes about, "hell to pay" may be the more enviable option.

Thanks for the quick replies!

This was my understanding as well, however I may have taken it to an extreme.

The LG monk in our party made a deal with an evil hobgoblin(his freedom) in exchange for information on the location of an evil dragon. My cleric(Iomedae)told the monk that he would not be bound to any deals made with evil creatures. The monk player started to get angry and I thought I was playing my character properly, so I decided to have my character leave the party.
