PaizoCon UK 2011

PaizoCon General Discussion

1 to 50 of 198 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | next > last >>

I know Wintergreen has been a bit busy with other stuff recently, but to try to get things rolling with regard to 2011, are UK Pathfinder Society members (and other gamers) happy still with Birmingham as a location for the convention? Given how 'cosy' the Year of the Shadow Lodge event was this year, it seems we need to look at larger rooms, at the very least, for 2011 and checking whether Birmingham as a location for the venue makes sense too.

Plus if there are any other comments/suggestions/feedback?

Dark Archive

I'll post this, even though it's only a vauge possibility.

I work at a place where we have a "training auditorium" that holds 250 seated people.

I reckon it would hold around 100 gamers, and we probably would be able to have a couple of spill rooms too.

I've mentioned this to Wintergreen, but he hasn't had chance to think about it, as I mentioned it a few days before PaizoConUK this year.

The only downsides I can see are 1) It's near Warrington, so miles away from the current location. 2) It isn't really near hotels etc etc.

1) Is mitigated by *very* good mway/rail links.....

While I would ofcause prefer a more southly location ;) i really enjoyed PCUK 2009 and can see that Birmingham makes a lot of sense as a location. Hopefully i will be able to make PCUK 2011, as the new job is doing me nicely.

Liberty's Edge

I'm hoping to be able to attend this for the first time next year. I'm based in Cheshire, so Birmingham is fine. If it was much further south, it would start to be a bit of an issue, while if it was slightly further north (e.g. Warrington) it would be no problem at all.

The Exchange

I guess it is time for me to start planning this. First thing is location. How do people feel about Aston University? Should we be looking for another venue?

<points up> :D

More seriously though. Ashton has a lot going for it. It's central, it has nice facilities, but I think you've hinted before that could get more problematical if we get much bigger?

I'd prefer a more Northern venue purely because that makes it cheaper/easier for me to attend. I'm sure everyone (yourself included) also wants that, so central is probably fairest. The only reason I've presented the above option is that I think (hope) we could get it a lot cheaper than anything else, which could be very attractive to some peoples... If you want to discuss that at all, you have my email address :)

Venue cost has some impact on ticket price.
Accommodation prices and travel costs from accommodation to venue feed into the cost of attendance for people too, though and (in the case of special guests) back into ticket price.

Scarab Sages

Have to say that I would sadly never say that the M6 was a good motorway link :)

Birmingham is a good middle ground for most however IMHO.

Sovereign Court

I have something of vital importance to discuss, something that could easily affect the entire convention, and perhaps the whole Birmingham area...

I will be attending this year.

Oh well, that changes everything. I'll have to re-plan it all now. ;)

I'm sorry to drop this on you, i'm well aware of the huge spanner I may have thrown in the works. I commend you for beginning the preparations that must precede me early- you are a gentleman and a scholar sir...

One tries. I will have my minions begin the preparations immediately.

So I'm thinking in light of this and the numbers attending this year that it is possible we may get close to 100 attendees in 2011. So we will need bigger rooms. Are people happy with Aston at present?

Sovereign Court

I was happy with the venue. But it did seem that we were pretty much at capacity already, so unless they're able to provide bigger rooms it might be time to start looking for somewhere else... of course, the only other place I know of in Birmingham is the masonic hall that Games Expo use, and I think that may be a bit too big for now.

Wintergreen? Initiate plan "Secret Alternate Location" boss??

I would be happy with Ashton, assuming they can handle the space requirement. I'm sure they will be able to though.

The Exchange

Plans are being initiated.

The Aston Conference Centre does have bigger rooms.
How did people feel about having two rooms this year? Was being split a hindrance? Was it better to have more space?

More space always good, and I didn't find the split a problem. That said, as a sociable chap, all being in one room is best if possible. I'd rate space above less rooms though if I had to.

On the basis that many current attendees are PFS fiends, who can no more resist a 'one off' special event than a succubus could resist a cheese fondue orgy (okay, it's lacking in demons, but I was looking at Asterix in Switzerland recently whilst browsing possible christmas presents for relatives, and the cheese fondue definitely featured, hence the reference) I feel relatively certain that if we have another 'Year of the Shadow Lodge' type event we will need to fit practically all the attendees in one room.

Edit:
And, not to grumble too much but the home computer here's gone down again and I'm stuck with occasional public library access to post...

Ick. With regard to Dragonmeet at the end of this November, I see the Victoria line is due to be closed for engineering works on the 27th according to the London Transport site. One less short-cut from Euston across the city centre. :-?

Link to page for tube (I hope). From there follow links for 'planned works' and then 'this date' to select the appropriate date to check for scheduled engineering works: *Link*

Sovereign Court

I was happy with the 2010 arrangements. With more attendees, it's larger rooms or more rooms. The only issue I can see is that larger rooms can raise the noise level overall, whilst more rooms has co-ordination issues.
The space seemed about right for the number of attendees, certainly no smaller.
The venue was fine for me regarding travel, accomodation, food, and cost.

Just a gentle nudge to remind UK posters with the time and money to travel that (snowfalls permitting???? ;) ) Dragonmeet is scheduled for this coming weekend.

The Exchange

While I'm sure a lot of UK Pathfinders are thinking about gaming at Conception at present, I'm also planning for PaizoCon UK 2011.

So what dates would be good? 9th-10th July? 16th-17th July?

My family are getting accustomed now to arranging their July around when PaizoCon is not the other way round... ;)

Which is closest to when it was last year? Do either of those clash with anything random?

Ha, ha. I like that :D

The first PaizoCon UK was around the 9th July, this year it was 17th/18th. At the moment I'm not aware of any big events happening around these dates but I wanted to check if any of you guys did.

The Exchange

It looks like 16th/17th might be the preferred date. I'll confirm things next week so if anybody has a problem with that weekend they need to let me know by the end of the week.

As there have been no objections I can confirm that PaizoCon UK 2011 will be on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2011 at Aston University Business School Conference Centre.

Excellent! We have bigger room(s) this time, to accumulate the growing ranks of PFS players and to host any special events? :)

I can't help but hear a "Mwa ha ha ha" at the end of any sentence you end with "Plan". Not sure why ;)

Just to put my order in, I would *love* to be in a game you run again Dave. Among the Dead is one of my favourite gaming experiences to date...

Very kind of you to say that. Only volunteer GMs get to influence table assignment :D

Oh, of course I'll be volunteering to DM, it a) reduces the cost, b) gives me a more concrete reason for the Mrs as to why I can't cancel at the last minute, and c) is just as much fun as the playing part!

Same as last year is my current plan, i.e. DM 1, play one Sat, DM 1 Sun... Play one Sunday too, depending on Travel arrangements...

Excellent! *Mr Burns voice*

And, Paizo HQ have announced the dates for the Seattle event... :D

The Exchange

And if you want a taste of what PaizoCon UK 2011 will offer then check out this UK convention Conception.

Platform 12 at Birmingham New Street shut today with scaffolding all over the place. I will try to keep an eye on this in case it is the start of the much rumoured redevelopment of New Street station (which could impact travel by train in July).

The Exchange

Demand for Pathfinder Society at Conception was fantastic. So I'm now wondering if expecting a hundred people at PaizoCon UK this year isn't too optimistic.

*Shakes head* What have I started!?

All newcomers will of course be officially welcomed, and informed of the traditional curry night, which hopefully will occur again this year (aalthough poor PA's are not allowed to attend.)

Sovereign Court

Assuming adequate arrangements for one of my station have been arranged, I shall be asconding to this event too.

Curry night sounds awesome.

The Friday night balti has become a tradition so I will get my newly appointed PA to make sure the arrangements are acceptable to your status ;)

The balti night will definitely happen - I think some people come along for that and the gaming at the weekend is just an extra!

Notes the "Chaotic" part of the Job Title.

Sorry, expanding numbers means I require 2 active PAs (plus need to balance out the Chaotic part!)
