Traits: Why wouldn't you pick Adopted?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I thought Traits were suppose to be about half a Feat in value until I saw the "Adopted" Social trait which seems pretty Brok.., err overpowered [almost said it!]

Why take a +1 trait bonus to Will saves when you can have...

A Bonus Feat [assuming you're not human]

Halfling Luck: +1 to all saves! Way more than a Feat

Hardy: +2 racial bonus to saves vs. Poison, Spells, & Spell-like Abilities! [assuming you're not a Dwarf] Way more than a Feat

Darkvision [assuming you're not a Dwarf or Half-Orc] Fantastic for certain builds, worth a Feat for those builds

Elven Magic: +2 to overcome Spell Resistance! It's a whole Feat

Am I missing something here or is this the only Trait?

Why wouldn't I pick Adopted? Because my character wasn't adopted.

Yes, you are missing something. It allows you to take a Race Trait for a different race, so you could use it to get Arcane Dabbler even if you weren't an Elf. Note it says race trait, not racial trait. It's a subtle difference but...

[EDIT] Also, what Mark said

+1 Only character I've seen with it was infact adopt in his backstory. It was very important to his character concept so this added great flavor.

You're missing something very important. There's a difference between a racial trait and a race trait.

Racial traits include the abilities listed above.
Race traits are something completely different.

Stuart please scroll down and look at Traits.

The racial Traits like the Human bonus feat and the Dwarven Darkvision are BLATANTLY not meant to be accessible with this trait, its irritating that people think they are simply because they both unfortunately share the same name.

The Adopted trait allows you to pick something like Warrior of Old as a Human for example.

Dark Archive

No, he's right on what it does. It was banned from PFS for a reason.

A:Race traits and racial traits, despite similar names, are different things. Racial traits are the abilities you get for being a race, like darkvision or stonecunning. Those are locked in and cant be swapped around.

Thank you all for the clarification. Unfortunate choice of name, too similar imo.

I'm relieved to be honest, it did look somewhat out of sync with all the others!

An ideal situation would have been calling them Racial Features or Racial Abilities. Also, considering there is a race section in the the Trait system, it's odd that people jump back to race descriptions in the core area. That trait has been around a long time and there seems to have been a resurgence in the confusion about it.

Also, it is NOT banned in PFS. only Hedge Magician, natural born leader, Magical Knack, and Rich Parents are banned from the basic traits

Yep. This is what happens when you call two different things by the same terminology. Considering that they'd already used "trait" as a mechanical term in Pathfinder, I'm confused why they started referring to racial abilities as "traits" as well. That was... ill advised.
