Why DO you like Psionics?

Problems with the system, yes - but most of those were about 'going nova' rather than about power points per se - you can amend a power point system to avoid that, if you wish, partly by re-writing the powers that make it easier and partly by capping the power point expenditure per round.

Thank you for trying to help keep that thread on subject, BTW, it is appreciated whatever else our differences of opinion.

I can't disagree with that, I think it's a shame that we can't do polls on these boards which would be a much better way of getting a sweep of opinion, and it's a shame that when things seem to be running against us we can't always resist sticking our oar in - that's human nature I guess.

I think this is anecdotal. I've actually only met one DM that disallowed it completely, myself, so experiences can and will vary. What I can say is, it's the only 'optional' system to end up in the SRD, and every book seemed to have some psionics content. Some settings had it hard-written into them (such as Eberron, which was hugely popular) and it always seemed to get a mention. It certainly stirs up some contention on the boards, anyway!

For the record, in response to your earlier post, I'm pro one casting system, whether it's vancian or SPS doesn't matter either way. I'd also rather see psionics Feat based rather then Spell based so you can do actual wild talents, but that's just me.

I do also remember people stating in your other thread that they didn't like psionics because it was a tacked on system. I've played in many games where you could give a DM a supplement with a class you want to play, they look it over in about 5 minutes and okay it. You bring them a book with an alternate system like XPH, MotI, Book of Magic, or ToB: Bo9S and they look it over, realize they have to go through the entire book and turn it down. I've seen and heard about this happening in other games I don't play in far more often. To them it's easier to work in a Ninja then in a European style game then a Class with it's own unique system.

As for supplements I think the only books that had any thing of substance besides XPH and Complete Psionics (which had magic in it too :) was Magic of Eberron and Secrets of Sarlona. All in all I saw about as much support for psionics as I did popular splatbook classes like scout or warlock, which wasn't much. I don't include 3pp as it often provided amazing amounts of creep for everything, not just psi.

As for polls, I find that they don't work out to well. First, in order to get a good spread, you'd have to be able to ask several questions, say a bout the magic system in general, that people would have to answer each one in order to vote. This way you can possibly get answers from some one who might see a question about psionics and ignore it because they don't care about it. Then you get all the fun of polls such as dealing with the ones where you have answers like:

* Elves Rox!!!
* I hate elves cuz I'm a drooling moron
* BACON!!!
(Note: I don't think you would do this but it tends to be common from what I've seen and the person who posts it will turn around and try to use it to prove their point)

Then there is the common complaint of "My options not list". Some times this is legit. I remember one I did where the web page screwed up and launched the thread with out the poll so I had to add a poll to the thread and forgot to add an answer. I couldn't go back in and edit the poll. Some times, though, I swear you could post a thread that say 2+2= 4 and have "yes" and "no" options and you will still get the same complaint (see "BACON!!!")

I don't know ... I have tried this before, on the WotC pages on the subject of DMPCs. It actually worked reasonably well, although I was accused of all sorts of things by the supporters ... who apologized after I came out of the pole and conceded that, based on the answers, DMPCs were not an automatic game-killer but could be an asset to a game in the hands of a capable DM.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Actually, a power point based system I agreed with...and I am a GM that first introduced Psions to my table.

But yes; I do agree with this - it is win/win because they won't be using the 3.5 psion (which I know will make one of my players very angry). I have optimism now for the Pathfinder "psion" or whatever they call it.
